Hello all. While sleeping; is there any other functions in a human that also go to 'sleep' ? Or is it only portions of the brain ? The production of cells, the healing processes that may be happening, the digestion, the growth, the decay, the activity of dozen of organs seem in permanent action... I would say vision, and to a certain level, smelling, tact, hearing are not alert/active. Tossing and turning in bed is not muscular sleep, is it ? Do those dozen of organs have their 'rest / vacation' time ? 🤔

For an average individual the medical community seems to suggest a healthy resting systolic blood pressure of no more than 120 and diastolic blood pressure no more than 80 and a resting pulse pressure (the difference between systolic and diastolic)be no more than 40. So given a slightly elevated resting systolic pressure of say 130, what would they like the lower number to look like? And why?

As far as I remember, I did not have many nosebleeds when I was a teenager. But since 10 years ago, when I was 24, I first started to have nosebleeds which are usually spontaneous, I cannot remember if my nose was once injuried, but even if it was, it shouldn't be anything serious because I never saw a doctor for nose injury. 5 years ago, I saw a doctor, I was advised to a specialist where some simple checks and treatment were done and for the next five years, I didn't have any nosebleeds until recently, it comes back again. There is no pattern for my nosebleed to happen, it could happen in the spring, summer or winter so dry air shouldn't be a re…

(I did a keyword search, thinking this might already have a thread here, but found nothing. If SFN already has a thread on these apparent attacks on US Embassy staff, mod can fold this into it as an update.) https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/national-security/many-200-americans-have-now-reported-possible-symptoms-havana-syndrome-n1274385 There are aspects, regarding motivation, that are baffling. If they are deliberate attacks, what's the goal here -- removing specific persons that foreign intelligence doesn't want around? General harassment? Impeding embassy operations for some political goal? If it's some form of surveillance, wh…

Have you heard about the fact that the Arctic ground squirrel, when frozen, cuts off the electricity of the brain and then turns it on? This is a mystery as far as I know? My question will probably be funny? I want to know if it is possible to repeat this in humans? https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/arctic-ground-squirrel-brain/

This marketing reminds me of past marketing campaigns targeting peoples insecurities about their social acceptability potential, like deodorant campaigns. The difference I think this time is that scientifically-naive women will cause themselves real harm following this particular campaign because to me it's a new frontier that the idiot is pursuing for personal enrichment. I can see allied products coming in future in a trend that wil cause tangible, long term adverse effects to their bodily function... the thin end of a commercially-motivated insidious wedge. I think goverment agencies should come down hard on this quack science. The first adverse effects could we…

On Google, there are two contradictary answers. One is purely genetic so if you don't inherit some genes you can never roll your tongue no matter what. Another answer is one can learn and practice to roll their tongue even if they are born to be a non-roller. Which one is the fact?

I have been searching on Google but the information about tetanus is confusing to me. For example, there are different terms, for example, tetanus shot, tetanus vaccines, tetanus booster, tetanus antitoxin. As for the expiration, there are a large range of results from a month, to 3 years or 5 years or 10 years. As for the doses, there are also different results, 1 shot or 3 shots. Is there any clearer explanation about the prevention of tetanus for adult? Added: About 3 years ago I got a tetanus shot after a deep wound cut by the edge of a metal can. Before that I did not get any tetanus shot for at least a decade and I don't know if I got it when I was a kid o…

Man should seriously breed Homo sapiens for longevity, strength and overall health both physically and mentallly. The healthiest humans tend to be the most productive in society and the most sexually attractive as well. It's a win-win situation to breed healthy and strong people. People with known hereditary health issues should be taken out of the gene pool. These people who are not genetically fit to breed should unselfishly adopt children in need of homes if they have the means to do so. People without sufficient stable economic means should not parent children at all. The world is well overpopulated as it is. Also, women who are about to become pregnant, …

I believe that I have emotional problem, e.g. I could get angry so easily but it subsides so slowly. Is it medically considered to be a kind of mental problem if this is the only symptom I have? Another question, is emotional problem proved or believed to be some special chemicals in our body lacking or in excess?

I truly understand that there is no one answer to this question because ingredients for different brands may vary a lot. but I mean, on average, in general, relatively speaking. My guess is, chips is the best, ice-cream is the worst, choco is better than sweets. Am I correct?

Do you find that you are not able to think or analyze things clearly when you are outside, (i.e. Not at home), you are only able to focus on the environment and the problems you see with your eyes and make your direct or natural response to it by your sense, not by your brain? Why am I asking this question? I find that I am not able to think deeply or clearly when I am outside. For example, a salesman in a street stall talked to me and wanted me to join or subscribe to their mobile or cellular data plan. I had hard time understanding what he said, it wasn't language barrier at all, it was because I wasn't able to think clearly at all if it was a real deal or any hidd…

Over the last few decades we have breakthrough in communications, from the time that we can only call by landline and hear only sound from another side to now that we are carrying a mini computer around (e.g. smartphone) that we can do many things with it. However, it looks like that there isn't any breakthrough in medicine (If I am not wrong). Yes, there may be better technologies, better methods, better analysis and understanding of a patient and a disease but it looks like the root of problem cannot be solved, for example, if one has diabetes, he cannot be cured totally but has to manage for a life time, if one is found cancer at its advanced stage there is little…

I am looking for a good game that I can play on a daily basis to improve my basic medical knowledge as part of studying paramedicine. It would be really cool if there was some game like Wordle where you just play it for 1-2 minutes once a day. Obviously I would do more study than this but I think a small game is a good way to retain knowledge after you have completed a course and are studying the next course - that extra 1-2 minutes refresh can really add up over a year.

I'm living in a developed country where I have never experienced starve, I may have experienced overweight more often. I know that, I understand that for a balanced diet, one cannot live with fruit and vegetables. Here I have two major questions about this. 1. If I haven't had ANY fruit or vegetables for a few months but I still take in meats and carbohydrates, could I have deficiency in vitamins of any kind? 2. If I practice fasting and do not eat anything at all for a week, and probably drink only distilled water, could I have deficiency in vitamins or other essential materials for life? I'm looking for medical or scientific advice rather than legend or u…
