Psychiatry and Psychology

Manifestations of neurological disease, psychopathological states, and related topics

  1. Without seeing a doctor, is there a general method to help with most, if not all, psychological diseases? I understand that it may not be official, I understand that it may not be clinically proved, I understand that it may not be a cure. However, I am pretty sure that I had some kinds of psychological diseases but I am not sure what it is, probably anxiety, probably obsession, probably depression, I don't know, but for all kinds of reasons, I am not able to see a doctor now. Even though that's the case, I strongly believe that I could overcome or manage by myself because I once managed, probably 15 years ago I had some kinds of psychological problems that were greatly af…

Have any studies been done on individuals with very high ontelligence? How exactly are the brains of guys like Terence Tao or Ed Witten different from an average brain that makes them so smart? Is it about brain size? Size of some brain areas? Some unusual synaptic properties? Whatever?

  5. I've been thinking about this and it's been haunting me for a while. I learned about BIID only a slight bit ago, and now I've been thinking about the correlation with RLS, Restless Legs Syndrome. I haven't done any studies, but I'm quite interested in perhaps doing one. I've always had symptoms similar to BIID, particularly in my right leg. I also have RLS, especially in my right leg as well. I wonder if perhaps they could be connected in some way, maybe it could be a similar mutation in the brain? I'm very intrigued about this, because it would open up some more information on both disorders.

  6. When I studied Psychology, I learned that there is very little difference between men and women psychologically. The differences that psychologists do see often disappear when controls are put in place. However, at the same time there are people who identify as the opposite gender (or no gender at all). Doesn't that imply that there are psychological differences between the male and females? What am I missing here? Perhaps I am misremembering what I learned - could it be that there are no differences intellectually between males and females but that there are other differences? The other thing that confused me is that my understanding is that hormones effec…

Before you answer, think about what I wrote. Have you ever wondered why we can't understand the thinking of our brain? What if there is a defense mechanism? Why don't we know how our thoughts appear? Do you understand what I wrote about? I mean, we can't understand our thinking. We can't scan our brains. Do you understand what I'm saying? I have a question if we understand our thinking, can it cause us problems? Do we have a defense mechanism that prevents us from understanding how we think? We divide our thinking according to different characteristics, but we do not understand how a thought appears? Why is that? Are there people who understand this? Can we be aware of ou…

There is a level of non-verbal communication that is well known, and many books have been written about human body-language. How important is interactive body language? How much deeper of a human connection exists for a person who often engages in deep enough conversations that the body takes part in it with its own language?

  9. It seems easier said than done to 'Leave the past behind and move towards the future'. I read a comment somewhere, ' A big reason why a lot of us live in the past is because our present sucks and we don't see any future ! ' Any practical suggestions preferably by psychiatrists and psychologists, and others too, are welcome. TIA.

We often say time heals all wounds. In fact, what is the actual process and the change in our body that will make us feel so bad at a time, but after some time or a long time, we will not feel like that even if we still remember the incident that made us sad?

I think the mental health service should maintain it's stance on suicide prevention efforts. But unfortunately some people have been advocationg a sort of suicide deterrence. Trying to stop suicide by stigmatising suicide victims is a recipe for disaster. Mental illness obviously does not discriminate. Indeed there are many different types of mental illnesses and therefore many different reasons as to why people die of suicide. Suicide and mental illness are very much related so telling people to get help while simultaneously stigmatising suicide would be very dishonest. The method of suicide is ultimately the same cause of death as any physical illness. For ins…

  12. Recently I am experiencing serious psychological problems that I feel so stressed. I have talked to volunteers on the phone for reliefs, but my condition (primarily negative thoughts but not suicidal) persists. Is there any free or paid medical help or other recommended resources on psychological problems that can be conducted online? I have joined a discussion board but there are just too many threads, and too many people starting their own threads, but hardly anyone there giving any reply. It's just like a pin board in college that most people won't read, some may read, but then go, there is no discussion.

Several members have congratulated @Alkonoklazt for bringing this paper to our attention and I believe it is so interesting it deserves adiscussion thread all of its own The Empty Brain Robert Epstein https://aeon.co/essays/your-brain-does-not-process-information-and-it-is-not-a-computer The paper is short but I am not sure I have permission to reproduce it here. Perhaps a mod would advise please ? I have a couple of reservations about the paper in that it makes absolute declarations or assertions although I do appreciate the 'market' in which the concepts are being promoted. For instance it says there…

  14. Someone close to my family has had years of depression which they refused to treat and has now fallen into a deep and sustained depression. I am trying to help through coaching and encouragement but my efforts have failed totally. Is there any non-pharmaceutical method to help this person out of their depression? I am struggling to find methods which will result in a quick alleviation of this mindset. Any help welcomed.

I knew a young woman, let's call her Y, with a severe mental illness, which made her feeling very unhappy most of the time. One of the rare but consistent situations when she was always very happy, was while SCUBA diving. I thought that this effect was psychological, e.g., taking her mind away from her worries. But now I wonder if there could be a physiological effect, e.g., of a higher oxygen partial pressure. (She usually dived on Nitrox.)

Kinesthetic intelligence How do you improve kinesthetic intelligence? Say walking on a treadmill and trying to add times and speeds and calories. I find it hard to do mental math when walking in the treadmill. And then there is karate forms. When I get tired say 20 pushups followed by 30 sit-ups the forms become more challenging. And then I make mistakes like kicking with the right leg instead of the left side. I know this is natural to become tired. And this is why we train. Actually once I recover I feel better and probably have better concentration. But how do you improve concentration and performance as you become exhausted?

https://theconversation.com/explainer-why-are-we-afraid-of-spiders-26405 I’ve been wondering a small bit about the irrational fear evoked by spiders and snakes. Some people say there may be an evolutionary component to it as a few of these creatures can potentially be deadly. But our visceral response to them seems to be far more excessive than the actual threat they would have posed throughout human evolution. Humans obviously have a limited capacity to empathise with animals. We can anthropomorphise our pets and we might admire animals in the zoo. But as the philosopher Thomas Nagal pointed out, “What is it Like to be a Bat?”. In other words what is the…

  19. Hi Yesterday I took a 350µg LSD tab obtained from a trusted source on Tor I didn't sleep since like 10 hours, then took the tab, after like an hour the effects started getting felt I'm used to stay laying on my bed in the darkness, listening to music using noise canceling headphones, the kind of music like Clozee does I didn't take some since like 6 month, I don't drink, neither smoke and such At some point I felt better than usual, I felt like I hear much more the music details I started thinking about what would be connecting everything, then I thought the last barrier to understand is to break the time/go beyond it. Then in my …

I'm no expert but I seem to think it's good that everyone is different. In a collective sense there can be a synergy gained. Some people are refreshingly humble and others perhaps display a more prideful ambitiousness. Humility might serve to make one more understanding. But the sensation of pride can reward us for being cooperative and achieving our objectives. Obviously rudeness or condescension is never acceptable but that's a very different issue. So I don't quite agree with this idea of false humility as I suppose it's the thought that counts. People can change depending on the context. I don't think there can be a perfect type of personality. What do you think?

Maybe not everybody has them, but most of the people I've known did. At one time, sometimes or many times, we have a moment .... we hear something, see something, feel something, remember something.... otherworldly. A dead relative whispers a warning. A phantom pet hops up on the bed and curls up behind your knees. The grass calls your name. The stars threaten to suck you up into the sky. You wake up in the middle of the night and know that someone has died. You have an unaccountable urge to get in touch with with someone, because they need your help. When something weird like that happens, do you formulate a rational explanation? Do you ignore i…

  25. There are number things leading up to this problem. One is hyperacusis but there seems to be hullucinations with hyperacusis. At the start last month there was some thing less obvious I notice. One is the space heater on three days making a strange noise that did not last long and so I did not think much of it. Than there was a day close to the end of February I heard the fan speed up on its own and did not think much of it. Did not last long. There was day close to the end of February I got super stress and anxiety. Starting in march I was hearing morse code, clicking sound and sorta of uuuummm and muuuum sound kinda hard to understand. But there…
