Autistics have a strongly logical thinking process and a strong predisposition towards memorizing facts and putting them into categories. This is different from neurotypicals who have thinking process strongly driven by emotions and shaped largely by social consensus. Is it possible for a neurotypical to naturally possess the same thinking style without having other traits of autism (social awkwardness, repetitive behavior, sensory processing difficulties etc.)?

Hi. How do we move past the stagnation of psychiatry? It is not moving forward very much. In treating depression/anxiety/OCD we are stuck with SSRI/SNRI since late 1980s and they are marginally more effective than tricyclic antidepressants which were discovered in 1950s almost by accidens. Newest drugs for schizophrenia are no more effective in treating it than drugs introduced in 1950s. For many things (negative and cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia, autism etc) we have no effective methods of treatment at all.

Hi Everyone If you are asked to assign the colours red, yellow and Blue (listed in no particular order) to the shapes triangle, square and circle (listed in no particular order), then which colour do you assign to which shape? You may at this point wish to pause reading this post while you consider your own personal answer to this question. I personally, strongly believe that there is no "correct" answer to this question and it is purely subjective. However, the teachers at the Bauhaus believed that the following correlations are the correct correlations: Triangle = Yellow Square = Red Circle = Blue My personal answer (which I came up wi…

It has niggled at me how the use of prophecies within fiction works, because my own experience is that (despite no belief in prophecy in it's mystical rather than rational foresight forms) it does engage with my emotions and creates a sense of satisfaction when it is used. I've noticed how a lot of fiction plays on the satisfaction and even pleasure we get in seeing Bad People suffer - best of all if what happens looks like poetic justice, ie it is not actual commissions of violence that we dislike but violence without "good" cause, against those who we think do not deserve it. Our liking of violence against those we deem deserving of it makes a sort of sense in evol…

Do people who are more intelligent crave stimulation, at all? But I have always wondered if this is why intelligent people are more likely to use drugs, specifically cannabis and stimulants. If the brain craves stimulation and its not getting it, as would be common with high intelligence, it would get that stimulation from stimulants, especially amphetamines and MDMA, as intelligent people have shown to be more likely to use. I am curious to see a study that looks at the correlation between individuals who participate in raves and IQ. If the IQ of "ravers" is higher than the general population, that could support the hypothesis, as raves tend to be drug and…

Not sure if this is just me but quite literally everytime I drink in the evening I end up having really bad nightmares when I sleep. I know alcohol can distrupt REM sleep but I cannot think of any logical explanation for why this happens and its wierd becasue I never seem to have nightmares anytime else. Any of you know why?

Since I dont know who I might start a conversation with about it, I posted it as an open question. Right now I am into learn about autism and Creativity, like music therapy. I think it could be interesting to also be able to know more about brain activity in other to find intervention that will be helpful for people with autism. In that case I will need to talk with Someone in the neuro field.

To join the military or be a doctor how high of IQ do you need? To go to medical school and do well in medical school how high of an IQ do you need? An IQ of at least 90? Any IQ lower than 90 and you will do really bad in school and have a really hard time in medical school at learning . In the military if you IQ is too low you may cause problems than be a help. As the case in the Low-IQ Troops in the Vietnam War.

Michael Bailey, a renowned sexologist, has recently written an opinion article in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, titled "How to ruin sex research". He writes that sex research is being hampered by ideology and scientists should not bow to ideology. He urges for the controversial ideas in sex research not to be censored. Quote: If people knew which ideas had merit and which did not even before the ideas had been thoroughly discussed and tested, then we would not need science. What do you think?

Maybe I am reading to much into it but apparently I'm supposed to believe that women of the world are going to decide not to have children if the rest of the world doesn't decide to take climate change seriously? To me this story seems like sensationalism to extreme, but maybe it is simply hyperbole. https://amp.usatoday.com/amp/3099448002 Why aren't journalist held to the same scrutiny that someone who maybe likes to make up their own science facts. Climate change may be a fact. But seriously? I can imagine some scientist waving the climate change banner backing this story but maybe I'm wrong.

well, I was diagnosed with drug induced psychosis 15 months ago, but it went away fast as I had quit doing drugs and quit drinking. For a little while I have been seeing images when I first wake up. First time, I saw a giraffe skin pattern. (which is odd because Giraffes are my favorite animal) I would only see it for the first few milliseconds upon opening the eyes, so I keep opening and closing my eyes to see if it changes, but it remains the same pattern. I've only had it happen a fear times that i remember, most recently today, but it was a checkerboard pattern. I don't know what the heck this is... I was wondering if it's anything I should worry about, I also…

Hello, I remember reading an article a long time ago about the tendency of people to disagree with depressed people. So if a person suffers from depression, people are more likely to disagree with that person's statements and opinions. It doesn't seem to matter what those statements or opinions are (positive or negative, offensive or flattering), and it doesn't seem to matter whether the depressed person makes their depression evident or acts as if they are happy. I can't find that article. I can't seem to find any research on any studies that would support the above. No doubt, my google search skills aren't as refined as they could be. I'm wondering if any…

Which are the substances which make a person extremely depressed? These types of substances are used in poisoning a person. The strongest feeling that the effected person has that he becomes extremely "CALM"? These types of substances make a person "DISABLED" to do the anger; he becomes very peaceful. In this type of depression-cum-madness the main point is this that the person becomes peaceful, does not do the anger no matter whatever happens. He becomes weak, extremely slow, angerless, calm, speaks extremely less and stands or walk very less, does useless sedentary works, like watching tv in which he does not have to put an effort. The second strongest thing that he fee…

How much can a human brain be "washed"? Does it depend on age, or is it just a matter of method and patience by the perpetrator(s)? Can our mind be hacked, like in The Manchurian Candidate?

So, I've heard proponents of the three hard sciences, physics, biology, and chemistry say, that it isn't scientific or scientific enough. If so, who should you go to if you are having an emotional or mental problem, rather than a psycologist of psychiatrist? Also, I'm not sure they qualify as scientists per se, just like a medical doctor just uses the medical techniques/methods they've been taught, they don't actually perform research.

why is it that some people act differently online versus in real life. I have a couple friends who like to be the 'villain' of the game if we are playing an RPG and I was wondering why this is. they are all pretty nice people and they hate it when people are mean to others but in the game, they change their personalities and like I stated earlier like to be the villains in games. I'm wondering why this is. Is it just to have a break from being so nice all the time or something else entirely? Any answers would be appreciated.

On Learning Difficulties: I bring to attention what I believe is a lesser understood facet of the largely speaking, Learning Disabilities. This I think is a cure. Some problems that people with learning difficulties may face (these symptoms belong to me): difficulty playing instruments difficulty learning languages mimic signature learn dance steps may not have a uniform handwriting style posture problems May learn the hold the squash/tennis the wrong way find it difficult to imitate the rhythm of a song find it difficult to imitate gym exercises speaking style may vary, especially when learning a new language. Cannot Learn a ba…

They say that to get over a fear, one has to expose themselves to that fear over and over until the fear goes away (assuming of course they experience no adverse effects). For example, I have a fear of public speaking. I'm trying to get over it by going to public speaking sessions. For example, toastmasters. I've been going for the past several months and I'm not experiencing the effects I was expecting. I still get very nervous speaking in front of crowds and it shows. What I'm wondering is, is there any research to show that to get over a fear of public speaking (or any phobia), one has to expose themselves to that fear at a sufficient frequency? I mean, to take a …

Murder is a concept that has always intrigued me. I've spent allot of time pondering when murder is justified or worth the cost it necessarily entails. Let's begin with a definition. A murder is any act in which a human being, or group of humans beings, kill another human (or group of humans) regardless of their own reasons (the pre-emptive killing your opponent, or killing someone in war is still murder in this case). Despite your ideas of what murder entails (i.e. unlawful, premeditated, etc.) we will use this definition throughout this thread since it provides a consistent account of the behavior actually occurring (Stimulus X --> Response murder). Now, an …

For those who don't know, the Law of Attraction is basically - "think positive, positive things will happen. think negative, negative things will happen." I want to get people's thoughts and opinions on this. This "force" that brings like minded individuals together simply because of their state of mind. I have a friend of mine who believes she found the love of her life because of the Law of Attraction. I am an atheist. So I don't really go with the whole "god and higher power/forces" mumbo jumbo. That's just not me. My mind is very logical and rational about things. But I am also very open to different viewpoints and different ideas. I had never heard about the …
