I just checked out an OS called Minix3 and I'm actually quite impressed. It sounds like what they're working on is a pretty good idea. I'll be it, user space possesses normally run a little slower (l4Linux for example runs slower than the the Linux macrokernel), and codding a microkernel is a lot harder to do, but I think a fully functional microkernel might prove to be superior to a macrokernel. My bets are on GNU/Hurd, but people have been "betting on it" for more than 15 years now and I doubt there will be any great releases running the GNU/Linux API any time soon. Tanenbaum (main developer for Minix) is the guy that had a flamewar with Linus in 1992. I don't…

  2. I downloaded the eTrust EZ Antivirus from http://www.my-etrust.com/Microsoft/vista/default.aspx. It is supposed to be compatible with Windows Vista BETA, but it just corrupted my hard drive today. I downloaded it about a week ago, and the real-time scan seems to work fine. However, I ran a full scan today and a blue screen with an error message appeared right after the scan was complete. A few seconds later, my computer automatically restarted. About a minute after the desktop finished loading, the computer went back to the blue screen and restarted again. This just kept repeating itself. I tried using system restore, but it did not fix the problem. Next, I …

Where is the data for the file properties stored? You can find out when a file was created, when it was edited, and you can also keep descriptions of the file. However, this data does not seem to show up as hard drive space that is taken. If you create a text file with one character, it will still have all the file properties listed but only be 1 byte in size. Also, when you open the file in any type of text editor you will not see the property data. Are all of the file properties hidden within the file, or are they stored in a central location within the operating system?

The company that I'm working for is still thinking about upgrading to Windows XP Pro. My recommendation for them is to wait for Windows Vista because the main reason they are upgrading is to improve their security. They want to prevent employees from playing games on the computers when they should be working. The company is under the impression that installing Windows XP Pro and then using Active Directory on their server will make it impossible for employees to install games. Is this true? I'm testing Windows Vista BETA, and it seems to have a lot of security features. Don't you all agree that it will be best to wait until Windows Vista before upgrading their co…

I just moved to Berkeley! The weather is wonderful, but the home I'm in is about a century old, and the outlets are not grounded. Is it safe to use my computer, with an adapter? I know that there are personal safety issues - if the case isn't grounded and the wrong wire gets crossed, things could go poorly. But if I'm careful, and if the power supply is very steady, with few spikes, theoretically I should be fine. That said, what is the likelihood of damaging my equipment by using an ungrounded port (with an adapter)? I want to think it's fine, but my gut feeling is telling me no, no no!

Hello! Could you please give me an advice? I'm looking for a new laptop computer, and as a student, i don'y have a lot of money ( 1100$ is my maximum ). My needs are quite basics : i don't play video games but for my work, i spend a lot a time on the internet and typing reports. As a consequence, my eyes are set upon the brand new MacBook. However it is not settled yet. Do you think some other laptop matches better with my expectations for a lesser cost, or is the MacBook the perfect one ? ( I need a lot of battery because it takes a long time to travel across France in train!) Thx

I don't know very much about programming, so I need a little help with something I'm working on. I want to upload a text file on a server that will contain a number. Whenever a certain web page is loaded, a code on that page will increase that number by one. If different page is loaded, a code on the different page will subtract that number by one. I also want an IF...Then code to put on a page so a certain action will happen if the number is greater than 0. If the number is greater than 0, the page will redirect to a certain URL, or if the number is 0 the page will redirect to a different URL. I hope I was able to explain what I want to do without making i…

I went to this site and I was suprised to see that they didn't have any lessons. I have no clue how to hack and wanted to use this site as a way to learn. If you have ever seen the show "It Takes A theif" then you know what I'm talking about. If you know how to hack then you can protect your own information. Does anyone have any idea as to why they do this?

The company I work for currently has Windows XP Home edition on their computers. They want to upgrade to Windows XP Pro because they've been told it will give them better control over what employees can do on the computers. They want to lock all web sites besides ones required for work, and they want to prevent employees from installing games and other programs on the computers. I'm really not sure how upgrading to Windows XP Pro is going to help them. I think you can create a limited account to prevent people from installing programs, but isn't that already on Windows XP Home edition? I feel that upgrading to Windows XP Pro would be a waste of money, but I rea…

  10. Okay this is really weird and could one could get some really good political conspiracy theory mileage out of it. If you are a user of Microsoft Windows open Notepad and type the following without the quotes, without adding a return character and without punctuation: "Bush hid the facts". Now save the file somewhere like to your desktop. Close notepad and then open the file you just saved in Notepad. If you want extra fun, make sure notepad is using the font "Arial Unicode". If you followed the directions correctly and exactly, then when you reopen the text file in Notepad it won't be stating what you typed in. But the file will be just fine in any other text …

I've discovered the secret to safely remove Internet Explorer from your computer permanently. It's a little difficult, and impossible to do manually. However, I created a program that will uninstall it. Do you think people would buy it, and do you think Microsoft would be able to sue me if I did sell it?

I'm looking for a free web host that can support my PHP code. I've searched for them but I can't find any that work! Here are some of the web hosts I've tried. AwardSpace.com: This service worked great at first. Then they decided to delete my account! They didn't send me an e-mail or anything. I've tried contacting them, but they won't reply! 1FreeHost.net: This company won't even give me an account! I filled out the form, and it said to check my e-mail for my password. I never got an e-mail from them. I clicked on, "Forgotten your password?" and I entered my e-mail address. It said my password would be sent to me, but I still didn't get an e-mail. C…

Recently, I reinstalled my Window as it's almost a year after the purchase. To my knowledge, the speed of the computer is inversely proportional to the complexity of the regedit. I'd like to get a spare copy of my present regedit . Here came a problem. I saved my present regedit and I loaded it again. It started loading but finally, a small window with a statement telling that it can't be loaded as one or more programs are using the regedit/ I have a lot of softwares running in my system .which program should be terminated by a second

I've noticed that I have a load of cat hair and various bits stuck under the keys of my keyboard. I've tried the various air-blasters and such, and none of them can get the hair - it's firmly stuck around the base of the keys. Is there any way I can pop some keys off to pull it out, or will I just have to get a pair of very fine tweezers?

I recently discovered ARP.exe (windows version). I have heard that using arp you can route all data coming in and out of your computer, this is how many hackers can learn usernames and passwords and listen in on your instant messaging conversations. When i run "arp -a" it returns: Interface: 192.168.0.5 ---- 0x10003 Internet Address Physical Address Type 192.168.0.1 00-0f-b5-7c-7f-20 dynamic My computer(192.168.0.5) is on a local area network and 192.168.0.1 is my default gateway. Can someone please explain to me what the information above means? Does it mean that all information entering and leaving my computer goes through 192.168.0.1? Is…

Within the past year, my computers have been attacked by multiple viruses and trojans that appear to hijack my ZoneAlarm Pro firewall and us it as a weapon against my computer. They all seem to break into my computer and download themselves, they don't appear to come from any web sites or e-mails I access. The firewall's main control panel application will not work, but the core application will be running and active. The core will start protecting the virus, and performing other functions for the virus. When you think about it, it makes sense why the creators of viruses might do this. ZoneAlarm Pro's core application is very difficult to terminate. If you try to…
