I have about 500 ft through 2 house walls to send a Wifi signal. I am using an antenna and the signal ranges from about 20 to 30 percent as long as the computer is by the window. My question is how do you attempt to set one router to act as a bridge and pick up the signal of the main rounter? I have set the channels the same, the WEP the same. But I haven't detected the main router on the second router. How do I be sure the routers are communicating? And will building this network give me a stronger signal? Thanks, Trurl

I have a laptop that have Windows 98 OS. Whenever I want to view pictures, I have to double-click and open the pictures to view them. Then close the window, and click another picture, and so on. It's a long process comparing to Windows ME or Windows XP. Windows XP have thumbnails where you can see all the pictures automactically. I was wondering if there's any program for Windows 98, so I can see the thumbnails, or is there any program that will allow slideshow, or picture viewer? Thanks guys.

I have a Western Digital 40GB hard drive from work that I'm trying to recover data from. When I turn it on, it will start making a loud clicking noise. Each click is about one second apart. Then I get a "Non-System disk or disk error". Some times, the hard drive will stop spinning for a few seconds, then it will start again and continue making the clicking noises. Sometimes it will stop completely until I reboot the computer. At one point, I turned the hard drive upside-down, and the clicking noise stopped. It sounded like it was actually reading from the hard drive for a few seconds, then it stopped spinning again. We already have a new hard drive. We just wa…

i need a form that someone can fill out, and which will then redirect them to another page which displays stuff (or not) dependant on the way that they filled out the form. I also need the form to save its data using GET, so that the URL can be copied and passed to someone else, who can then view the page. In other words, i need a form that will allow someone to 'customise' a webpage for someone else. now... i can't play about with any server-side gubbins; the only way i can conditionally display stuff is using javascript. which i dont know i've got as far as figuring out stuff like <script type="text/javascript"> if (variable1 == yes) ( …

Hi, A few days ago, I brought a floppy and copied all the files from it. Now, what I have is a harddrive full of two files - desktop.ini and folder.htt. I searched for the files and windows tells me that the total file number exceeds the capacity allowed. So, I ran a full system scan, and norton av found only three files and said that it was unable to repair the files and later it failed to quarantine those files. However, later I searched for those files again and windows showed 193 desktop.ini files. Now, my question is can I safely delete these files and does this redlof.a virus effects other files? I mean is there any chance that other files on my harddrive may be…

Hi all, Not sure where to post this, so I'm just putting it here. I was wondering what codecs quicktime uses natively? The reason is, I need to take some video from home, and I want to compress it with a codec thats supported by quicktime at school. The school's use iMacs, and I don't have access to a PC there... also, I would like the size to be as small as possible. Cheers, LazerFazer

Does anyone have some video game cartridges from some of the NES, Super Nintendo, N64, Genesis, or Game Boy systems? I think that computer companies should find ways to increase their memory capacity, and then use them as storage media. The only problem would be the capacity. I think the largest video game cartridges were 32MB for the N64. If their memory could be increased, they would be much better than floppy disks, CD-ROMs, DVDs, or flash memory. This is because I think the cartridges are much more durable. I was reading on a video game forum where people were posting stories about some of the things that have happened to their cartridges. Many people told s…

Information Technology is actually a history of regression. I started programming in Basic on Commodores and PCs in the early 80s. It was fast to learn and fast to put ideas into practice. In fact I would argue that 99 % of all IT programming problems were already well solved just using some well thought out Basic programs. Most problems IT has to deal with are really relatively simple. Then came along Turbo Pascal which was a truly great language, fast and very well designed especially to produce well structured programs. I would say that you could really feel a great improvement from Basic to Pascal. You knew things were really getting better. But good things don't last…

  14. As part of our business, we take digital photos of people; the photos are put on a CD with some additional materials and sold to the customers. Currently the process goes like this: Create folder structure on computer (day, AM/PM, group number) I do this fairly quickly by copying template folders Insert the SD card and copy the pictures from it onto the hard drive, into the folders created in the step above Use ACDSee to select only the ‘portrait shots’ and batch rotate them (the pictures are a mixture of landscape and portrait) Open Nero Burning ROM and load a base compilation, verify and change the date in the compilation label if necessary. Add the pictures …

Windows XP seems to take up more hard drive space than most other operating systems. I think I just figured out why. Windows installs on your computer at least 2 times. In many cases, at least 3 different copies of Windows XP will exist on your hard drive! Most of the files of the first copy of Windows will be installed in the "C:\Windows\System32" folder. This is the copy of Windows that your computer will normally use. However, Microsoft decided to make a backup copy of Windows. They say this is to prevent you from accidentally deleting any of its components. This backup copy is located in the "C:\Windows\System32\dllcache" folder. This folder is usually hid…

  20. Hey everyone I am working on a new file sharing program for synching with other systems. I am not too happy with FTP and normal windows sharing, so I want to try out an idea to make it easier to update server files while editing them locally. My concept works like this: In the synch program, you setup the prefs and browse to and mark a folder, and enter the info for what server you want it synched with. After that, it DLs the files from the server, mirroring them locally, but also caching the file info that the server supplies seperately. This way, each file locally is associated with info such as the server's file size (since CRLF/CR difs can occur if…

I was curious, because I couldn't reason by myself, how come nobody could predict the power of personal computers. Science fiction authors of the 50's and 60's, especially, envisioned computers of the future to be giant monstrosities, but very intelligent. Computers are still non-sentinent and extremely small. How come they didn't accurately predict what computers would become?

As a CS educator, I'm growing increasingly uncomfortable with the fact that we seem to be moving farther and farther away from traditional programming goals and aiming students solely at client-server, database-access work. Part of the problem, of course, is that that's what most programmers do these days. The vast majority of programming tasks in the business world (which is to say most programming) involves a client application and a database server. There are exceptions, of course, but it's gotten to the point where that's almost an underlying premise of every single project under development in most companies. People don't even talk about it anymore, it's jus…

  25. I've spotted a very interesting new concept for a search engine. Simply put, it uses distributed computing rather than one centralized cluster of servers doing the crawling. This means that the system is getting ridiculous amounts of new URLs every day (because there are numerous crawlers at once, rather than a few big ones) and lots of new data. I think it's a rather nice idea. Unfortunately, their alpha search engine component (the bit for actually searching the stuff the crawlers have gotten) is a bit lacking. A lot of various searches turn up Microsoft as the first result - no idea why - and other irrelevant things. They have multiple algorithms, however, so I…
