Dear all I’m studying quantum mechanics for my third year. I’m finding ladder operators a real struggle. Attached is a solution to an exercise. I understand that these operators cannot be swapped round, as they will have different results. However, I’m finding the solution hard to follow. I don’t see how or why the Hamiltonian operator comes into the right hand side and how or why it turns into a energy function. The other thing that’s confusing me is why the lowering operator is pulled out at the start of the solution then slotted back in. I would ask my lecturer but my year starts in October. I’ve nearly finished 2 textbooks back to back, would like the majority of …

Hi Guys, I'm hoping one of you can assist me. I would the like the below transformed to layman's terms so the average person (me) can understand the calculation: If 50% of all the people in a population of 20000 people drink coffee in the morning, and if you were repeat the survey of 377 people ("Did you drink coffee this morning?") many times, then 95% of the time, your survey would find that between 45% and 55% of the people in your sample answered "Yes". The remaining 5% of the time, or for 1 in 20 survey questions, you would expect the survey response to more than the margin of error away from the true answer. When you survey a sample of the population, you…

Hi I am having some trouble with one particular question. The question is: What is the oxidation number for the atom N is KNO2? This is the explanation I got. It looks like we have 2 unknown oxidation numbers (K & N), but the truth is that there is only one unknown (N). This is because KNO2 is a polyatomic (because it is called potassium nitrite, & nitrite is a polyatomic ion). Since polyatomic molecules are ionic, this means we know that the oxidation number of K must be +1 by the uncriss-crossing rule. We then look at O & its oxidation number is -2. The molecule is neutral, so the algebraic expression equals 0. We then solve as usual. I und…

A cell is placed in saltwater solution of 0.2 mM NaCl. Neither Na+ nor Cl- can permeate the plasma membrane. What happens to the cell? Assuming that = +60 mV, = -90 mV, and = -70 mV, find the direction of the electrochemical driving forces acting on Na+ and Cl- ions. In which direction will the ions move if they are transported passively? If they are transported actively?(Extra challenge: From the sign of , determine the direction of the concentration gradient of Cl- ions.) Please explain how you got the answer so I can do a similar one on my own Explain the mechanism of glucose absorption by intestinal epithelial cells. Include a discussion of the significanc…

Hi, I'm having some problems with this exercise on thermodynamics: "A cylinder with a movable piston contains a certain quantity of helium. With a very slow transformation - represented in a V-p graph as a straight line - it goes from state [latex]A(p_A=40kPa, V_A=3dm^3, T_A=300K)[/latex] to state [latex]B(p_B=150kPa, V_B=1dm^3)[/latex]. It is then subjected to a costant-volume transformation followed by a costant-pressure one, returning to the initial state". It can be summarized in this graph: all From which it's pretty simple to find the work done (area of the triangle): [latex](110kPa*2dm^3)/2=(110Pa*2m^3)/2 \Rightarrow \color{red}{W=-110J}[/latex]. A clock-wise tran…

1. Partnership : When two or more than two persons run a business jointly, they are called partners and the deal is known as partnership 2. Ratio of Division of Gains: (i)When investments of all the partners are for the same time, the gain or loss is distributed among the partners in the ratio of their investments. Suppose A and B invest Rs. x and Rs. y respectively for a year in a business, then at end of the year (A's share of profit) : (B's share of profit) = x:y (ii) When investments are for different time periods, then equivalent capitals are calculated for a unit of time by taking (capital x number of units of time). Now, gain or loss is divided in the ratio of…

I am doing some exercises for my real analysis class and I ran into one that has been bugging me all day. I am using the book Elementary Analysis Theory of Calculus by Kenneth Ross. The problem is in Section 33 and is exercise 33.6 and it reads the following: Prove that for any subset S of [a,b], M(|f|,S)-m(|f|,S)<=M(f,S)-m(f,S). Hint: For x,y in S |f(x)|-|f(y)|<=|f(x)-f(y)|<=M(f,s)-m(f,s). Note that this book might have different notation than what some of you are used to but just to be clear, M(f,S)=sup{f(x):x in S} and m(f,S)=inf{f(x):x in S}. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks..

With this simple short cuts you can find out a number is divisible by a given number Divisible by 2: A number is divisible by 2, if its unit’s digit is any of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8. Example: 6798512 Divisible by 3: A number is divisible by 3, if sum of its digits divisible by 3. Example : 123456 1+2+3+4+5+6 = 21 21 is divisible by 3 so 123456 is also divisible by 3 Divisible by 4: if the last two digits of a given are divisible 4, so the number can be divisible by 4. Example : 749232 Last two digits are 32 which are divisible by 4 so the given number is also divisible by 4 Divisible by 5: If unit’s digit of a number is either ‘0’ or ‘5’ it is divisible 5. Exa…

A 2.0 kg otter starts from rest at the top of an incline 85 cm long and slides down to the bottom in 0.50 seconds. What net external force acts on the otter along the incline? So I was planning on using F=ma, and since we have the mass, we need the acceleration to find F. a = change in velocity/time. velocity = change in displacement/time = 85/.5 = 170 cm/s =1.7 m/s a = 1.7/.5 = 3.4 m/s2 Then F=(2)(3.4) = 6.8 N. But that is wrong because it should be 14 N instead. Apparently if you use delta x = v0t + .5at2, you can solve for a that way and you get a = 2(delta x)/(t2) = (2)(.85)/(.52) which gives you 6.8 m/s2 And then if you use F=ma, you get (2)(6.8)…

How I wish I could show this problem in drawing. This problem has to deal with the concept of similar triangle. In a diagram, PQ//YZ. PQ is parallel to YZ, |XP| = 2cm, |PY| = 3cm, |PQ|= 6cm and the area of triangle [math]XPQ = 24cm^2[/math] Calculate the area of trapezium PQZY. Let me describe the shape. We have a large triangle XYZ. The large triange XYZ overllaps a small triangle XPQ I was able to find YZ using PX/YX = PQ/YZ i.e 2/5 =6/YZ YZ = 30/2 = 15 cm My greatest problem now is how to find the lenght XQ of the small triangle XPQ using the area [math]24cm^2[/math] given. I find it hard because I can't figure out the height. Though am taking PQ a…
