I suppose, with the new reversed hierarchy, motorists will be more liable in an accident involving pedestrians and cyclists, or cyclists hurt a pedestrian, if they are shown to have not observed it. With the increasing use of in-vehicle cameras, it's probably more enforceable with that sort of evidence likely to be more available now. Even quite a few cyclists have them on their helmets. .False.2 points

I very much doubt there is one cause, though changes to policing practice seems a likely contributory candidate. And for 40+ years we had the benefit of the Road Research Laboratory (establish 1933, privatised 1996) So political dogma is another cause.1 point

I wondered about that, too. Until I read the second joke, which it seemed could be misunderstood as anti-Semitic. Though I lived in a Jewish community for a couple years, I confess I didn't quite get the point of the joke, either. (ETA: which I now see is an amusing way to put that! LoL!) Ok, kind of letting that Rabbi joke sink in, I wonder if someone though it was based on some stereotype of Jews conning people and thieving from them? That's all I can come up with. Ahh. Figured out the joke, which I see is easier to understand if you're British. In America, "nicked" doesn't have the double meaning it would in, say, south London. Also a weird joke in the US, where circumcision was nearly universal and had nothing to do with being Jewish, in many states.1 point

Someone, who is now a 1/4 inch 'shorter', must be overly sensitive to circumcision jokes. They were not relly good jokes, but I don't think Mistermack deserved a downvote for them.1 point

James Hamblin (@jameshamblin) Tweeted: So we're all supposed to "prepare for blizzard conditions" just because the scientific establishment and the media say so? And anyone who says it will be sunny and 70 is canceled? All's I'm saying is, lots of $ changing hands in snow shovel industry. This distinction you make between motorists, cyclists and pedestrians seems to me a false one, so far as taxation is concerned. Every motorist is also a pedestrian. Most cyclists are all three. The taxation principle, insofar as there is one, is surely not that a class of person pays more or less tax than another, but that an activity that requires costly infrastructure, causes pollution and contributes to climate change should be taxed.1 point

Hmm, I see. Re water vapour, I had always thought it was generally recognised that this is the main greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, but that as the amount is fairly self-regulating it does not lead on its own to a change, whereas it is the CO2 that is changing. In fact I think I have read that one effect of temperature increase due to CO2 is that the amount of water vapour goes up in consequence (not surprisingly, as the sea warms), thereby acting as an amplifier. Tell me, is it early experimental work you are looking for, specifically, or just early attempts at modelling the effect of CO2 on climate? Addendum: I've found a link to Callendar's paper, here, but it only shows the abstract: you have to buy it to read the whole thing: https://rmets.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/qj.49706427503 I found this from a site called "Carbon Brief" which has a nice timeline you can click on to see various milestones: https://www.carbonbrief.org/timeline-history-climate-modelling I notice also a reference to a Mikhail Budyko, in 1956, which looks as if it might be relevant, but there are others mentioned too which might be worth a look.1 point

On the one hand you have states like Wisconsin, who send all underage teens to adult jail for almost all crimes, and on the other, you have the current situation in California. Hanna Tubbs, a 26 year old biological male ( who after being arrested identifies as female ), walked into a rest room and sexually assaulted a 10 year old girl, 8 years ago, when Tubbs was 17 years old. The LA county DA, has decided in his wisdom, that since Tubbs was a juvenile when he/she committed the crime, he/she will now serve his/her sentence in a juvenile correctional facility, with underage females, even though he/she is now 26 years old. Hannah Tubbs: Woman convicted of sexually assaulting 10-year-old will serve sentence in L.A. County juvenile facility - ABC7 Los Angeles Am I the only one who sees something wrong with this ? Is it time for America to have a federally controlled Justice/Penal system, somewhere in the middle of these radical right wing, and left wing, extremes ?1 point

Probably UK related. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/the-highway-code-8-changes-you-need-to-know-from-29-january-2022 Seems odd timing and under publicized, but nothing much different than the local laws here in Florida.1 point

Oh, I don't know. Isn't it just like playing the lottery ? The two possible outcomes are , you win, or, you lose. And since there has to be one of the two outcomes, your chances of winning are 1 in two. have I been deluding myself all this time, playing the lottery, when my chaces of winning were much, much, smaller ? 😄 😂1 point

I am supporting the idea (once we are damn sure the target world is sterile). Much to learn about life. The problem is: who decides what to do and how to proceed. There is no 'world-level scientific government' or similar. So, it seems thugs will just happen. I understand, we had already some experience with unintentional life spreading on ISS. But ISS is a nice place. So, I still wonder if all this sterilization of Mars rovers is necessary - maybe we wouldn't be able to spread life there even if we try hard. Thinking to extremes: what if we never ever encounter any sign of life anywhere in the Universe - would we then be morally obligated to spread it out, or should we keep it confined here on one fragile planet?1 point

How do you circumcise a whale? . . . Send down four skindivers. A little boy was sitting on the front steps of synagogue in floods of tears. A kindly old lady asked him "whatever is the matter?" "The Rabbi nicked my pullover !! "0 points

How come it's only Republicans whom you think are bat shit crazy? Your ranting and ravings will change nothing Moon. When the elections have been concluded in November we will know what these next four years will hold for us. So just chill out for a couple months. You certainly aren't making friends or influencing people with you present rhetoric.-1 points

Ah! There you go again Moon, being bitter. Since I don't want you to go into cardiac arrest, just chill out a bit. Anyway, what do you mean by; go pound sand?-1 points

I honestly don't know what to tell you. When a man, Biden, standing only a heartbeat from our presidency; pulls off gaff after gaff and the only Democrat taking him seriously is the former governor of Virginia and a black man at that, little else can be said.If thise guy from Minnesota gets into office and is as nutty as democrats make him out to be, then it's a blot on a district in Minnesota, "not on the United States."-1 points
