And also, not actually interested in correct and interesting answers. While that is certainly true, past Labor governments, have and are making efforts to right the continuing wrongs, and of course ex PM, Kevin Rudd, did apologise officially in parliment for the stolen generation. We can and will do better, perhaps after the next elections, where I hope the current ScoMo and company are thrown out on their ear and a sympathetic Labor government installed.1 point

If you want to know the gravitational potential for 2D, just solve Laplace’s equation - you’ll find that the potential is logarithmic, as it needs to be, since the force now follows a 1/r law. However, the story is actually more complicated - the more general law of gravity isn’t Newton, but GR. If you apply GR two a 2D universe, you find that the Weyl tensor identically vanishes; in vacuum, the Ricci tensor vanishes as well, as per the Einstein equation. Since the Riemann tensor decomposes into Weyl and Ricci, the result is that in 2D there is no gravity in vacuum at all, outside a mass distribution. You only have gravity in the interior of masses.1 point

I disagree it's the same with ethics. We can prove the billionth digit of pi exists - by finding it. How would you prove the absolute rightness of some ethical conundrum with that same precision? Pi can be defined in terms with no reference to humans, or any other agents. How do we define an ethical act without reference to humans (or some other agent). To state that ethics has a definitive answer is a common position, especially amongst the religious, but it's not one we can prove either way. Although this may well be at the root of the different positions in this thread, maybe this point is going too far off topic and requires its own thread?1 point

Because when I said the following: You responded with: As I said. I'm relieved to hear you are not part of the 'we' that has to face extreme situations. Neither do WE, despite your rather insulting insinuation otherwise. But WE DO have to face extreme situations. And when those extreme situations affect more than one person, the appropriate pronoun is "we".1 point

Everybody agrees that you can't do whatever you want, but only a few agree that you can't say whatever you want. In other words there's a difference between speech & action. Why else the lack of consensus on these two? Thought ➡️ Speech ➡️ Action. Thought police: A big no-no! Speech police: Yeah/No/May be! Action police: Yes! Absolutely! It is as expected! Oui?1 point

I'm more familiar with the sprung ball detent type wrench, so notwithstanding ... : As stated in my previous post, deflection angle is proportional to the applied moment for a given wrench length, so providing you dont try to apply load from somewhere other than the end grip, the two should be linearly correlated. I see no need to go any further than the static force balance here. Serious bolt tensioning is best done without significant dynamic loadings.1 point

Another of course was by a great American artist, and political activist, who was the first person to sing at the Sydney Opera House in the early seventies. Only the foundations were laid, but he did this for the workers on site during their lunch break.... Paul Robeson.....1 point

Despite some outward similarities that is not elasticity. It isn't settling into that bowl because water is elastic, but because it is a fluid in a container, affected by gravity. The absence of other factors, like vibrations of the container allows the water to become still again. Other factors will matter - any variations in temperature within the water will result in water movement by convection and if in open air, the surface likely will be cooled by evaporation, so there will be continuing movement. Water has surface tension as well, affecting it's shape in a container, but if the water were elastic the bowl wouldn't matter - the water would retain the bowl shape without the bowl. It doesn't.1 point

! Moderator Note The answer is No. Also, nothing in the post seems logical, and the reasons for high death rates in the US are well documented and include: - dismantling of pandemic response forces and plans - downplaying the disease by politicians and especially the former administration - crippling CDC and other health professionals and undermining their message by the administration - as a result, anti-pandemic responses were fractured and often counterproductive (catastrophic PPE distribution, is but one of the many examples) - sowing vaccine hesitancy - lack of solidarity and trust in science We do not need a bioweapon, if we have facebook. Since this appears to be an attempt to promote conspiracy rather than a discussion, the thread is locked pending review.1 point

I loved the instrument, and the delivery is amazing. I can't say I like it better than Led Zeppelin's version though. This one is sweet. Led Zeppelin's is more... well, bittersweet. And I love both. Loved it! @beecee, I have a soft spot for working-class songs. One of the greatest American songs is, IMO, Sixteen Tons. So many unforgettable versions... I'm looking for a version by Merle Travis which he ends by singing, "I owe my soul to... Tennessee Ernie Ford". And the audience burst out laughing. It's taking me some time to find it. But in the meantime, here's a version by ZZ Top and Jeff Beck. Vinnie Colaiuta is at the drums. He's been praised as one of the best drummers of all time.1 point

As I understand it (imperfectly), it's not a matter of working out problems. The problems you have to deal with in one lifetime end with that life - from a karma perspective, they're as trivial as they are ephemeral. What matters is how you relate to the world, how you treat other humans, other life-forms; how you bear up under hardship; whether you grow or shrink spiritually. If you put off making up for wrongs you did to others, your soul is smaller at the end than it was at birth, so you return as a humbler, less powerful being and have to work your back up again to autonomous human. You should gain in enlightenment with each successful life, be less and less concerned with worldly possessions and status, until you attain a pure spiritual state. It's not all of a piece, though, the doctrine of transmigration; there are different versions in several cultures. https://www.britannica.com/topic/reincarnation1 point

I agree, but another crucial point about laws is that they represents a common, agreed standard by which conduct can be judged by the community. Laws remove the arbitrary element in deciding whether conduct is acceptable and thereby enable consistency and fairness - which in the end stops us all fighting one another in private disputes.1 point

No not at all, you are actually being rather silly, in equating the number of afirmative ticks, to a forum ranking. And of course what you see no evidence of, is your problem, not mine. I will do my best. 😅 but beecee added to that but each must be responsible for what he says and the consequences. Plus of course....“The problem with today’s world is that everyone believes they have the right to express their opinion AND have others listen to it. The correct statement of individual rights is that everyone has the right to an opinion, but crucially, that opinion can be roundly ignored and even made fun of, particularly if it is demonstrably nonsense!” ― Brian Cox No, actually I'm ignoring the rest of your rhetoric, and I'll dismiss all of what you have to say, as your manner and arrogance, speaks for itself. 1. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the things they read (or watch, or listen to, or taste, or whatever). They’re also entitled to express them online. 2. Sometimes those opinions will be ones you don’t like. 3. Sometimes those opinions won’t be very nice. 4. The people expressing those may be (but are not always) assholes. 5. However, if your solution to this “problem” is to vex, annoy, threaten or harrass them, you are almost certainly a bigger asshole. 6. You may also be twelve. 7. You are not responsible for anyone else’s actions or karma, but you are responsible for your own. 8. So leave them alone and go about your own life." That's been calculated many times. The limiting factor is the effect on the inner ear, causing nausea for some people. From memory, the answer is 224 metres. At that size, an orbital period of 30 seconds gives 1g artificial gravity, and no humans experience nausea. You could go lower than 224m and experiment with drugs for the people who feel nauseous, or go for slightly less than 1g, so the 224m isn't a fixed point, but anything over that would be ok. That sounds like a big space station, but it could be just two balanced units, with a 224 metre tether, rotating opposite each other. But anyway, in the distant future, it's likely that 224 metres would be on the small side. If a station is to be self-sustaining, it would have to be a lot bigger than that. So long term, I don't think size will be any kind of obstacle. But short term, it will be.1 point

I have to hand it to you guys and applaud your persistence in ignoring, deflecting, creating strawman arguments, and continuing to make misleading statements in a convincing manner. I take my hat off to you, that is a skill - you'd make very good politicians, I hear Klaus Schwab is looking. beecee is a prime example of this, ever keen to keep pushing the false notion that covid19 vaccines are safe and effective despite me pointing out on many occasions that this is incorrect - how can any vaccine or drug be claimed to be effective, with any shred of honesty, when it is still in it's trial phase, and when the vaccine / drug company / medical authority refuses to release all the data? The Pfizer covid19 vaccine's phase III trial doesn't finish until March 2023. I think it's time to stop flogging a dead horse. I thank you for opening my eyes to the realisation that some people are wedded to a particular narrative, cannot think outside the box, and will stick to that narrative regardless. With that I will take my leave and wish you all well.-1 points

This COVID-19 crisis is like a trampoline of evil. It encompasses all the pillars of global governance, economy, medical, political, and social. That's a bad thing, because a trampoline once disturbed will never stop. It will go on ebbing and swaying. First it was the delta strain, then the strain on the economy came. Then the economy ebbed then lockdown came. Then the lockdown was lifted and the omnicron strain came. A pattern emerges. Medical, social, economy, and social. The terrifying realization is that the only way to stop the trampoline ebbing and swaying is through a equal and opposite force that encompasses all the pillars of global governance. I speak of world war three. How that may happen is if USA sues china for COVID-19 damages. Or is that what Putin hopes to achieve through his ukraine offensive? One way or another, if the world doesnt descend into full fledged war, the trampoline will go on swaying.-1 points
