Just some shots of an animal that is amazing to say the least. http://twistedsifter.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/elephant-orphanage-at-pinnawala-sri-lanka.jpg http://twistedsifter.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/elephant-cooling-itself.jpg1 point

That is not fact, that account is in only one text that also has accounts of the supernatural and as such is suspect. I have never publicly or privately heard any Jew bad mouth Jesus. This seems to be some made up antisemitic hogwash.1 point

Uncomfortable is also a word a scientist wouldn't use in this instance. It has nothing to do with comfort. Natural world, use science. If it's outside that, you simply can't apply science. It's like measuring the width of your driveway with a poem. It's pointless, inaccurate, and sloppy. Isn't your faith in your religion enough? Why warp the methodology to suit your beliefs?1 point

Yes indeed, I too use the bike for local errands and only put <5000miles on the car annually. But even so, eventually the car needs replacing (Mine is now 13yrs old so it will be 14-15yrs old by the time I replace it.) The issue then becomes - apart from the operational footprint - whether an electric car involves more or less CO2 in its manufacture and supply than an IC one. I should have thought less, as an electric car has less machinery in it, unless the battery is particularly carbon-intensive to make. I realise there are environmental problems with mining some of the metals, notoriously Co, and maybe some of the lanthanides used in motor magnets, but these are in principle fixable and since the overriding imperative is climate change I set these to one side. I expect the next car I buy to be my last, given that I am 67 and would hope to run it until I'm 80 or so and starting to become a liability behind the wheel. But by then, with any luck, we will be able to hire driverless taxis - if Putin has not blown us all up.1 point

I know, I'm following many sources very frequently. Putin's current suspected false flag ruse is to shell from Ukraine into Belarus to try and get Lukushenko to attack from there in retaliation. Apparently, he's presently strongly resisting overtures from Putin to join in. Also, it seems, from Reuters, the US and Europe are working flat out to get high spec arms to Ukraine. It seems they are very impressed with how Ukraine is making use of what they have and are being given, and want to assist militarily as far as possible without being directly involved. Quite frankly, we are already at war with Russia, but we just haven't said the words. Russia is hoping to intercept these arms and give them to the Donbass militia. Also, Syrian volunteers are going to join in for Russia shortly.1 point

They don't call them "echo chambers" for nothing. The power they have to gaslight people (especially those who don't stray from one platform, and don't regularly clear cache and cookies) is creepy. The other distortion that bothers me is from platforms that favor brevity, like Twit(ter). Many issues are complex, and reducing one's thoughts to 288 characters may lead to shallowness and sloganeering. (For zen wisdom, it might be okay, and I do sometimes see very pithy stuff that is valuable)1 point

Members here are basing that on decades of scientific studies, that have been built in turn on a foundation of ever improving understanding of fundamental physics and chemistry and of understanding of climate processes. That agreement is not simply a case of our opinions being a majority here but of the majority here being familiar with what those studies have been saying.1 point

A lot of the health issues around radioactive materials are actually chemical in nature, by being chemically toxic and biochemically carcinogenic. Eg, Strontium 90 when ingested will be used in place of calcium in cells and tissues, but then the Strontium undergoes radioactive decay, breaking apart the molecules they were part of (which may become toxic in turn) and becoming Yttrium 90 and then Zirconium 90 whilst releasing alpha, beta and gamma radiation, which induces further unwanted and potentially harmful biochemical reactions in surrounding tissue. Re the Thermal History of Earth there is still a lot of uncertainty but the fundamental processes appear understood. Like heat from compression being ultimately attributable to the formation of the Earth - the energy came with the materials that coalesced to make Earth. And whilst we may not perceive rock as being a good insulator it is in fact a very good one when it is hundreds of kilometres thick, so much of that heat has still not managed to get out.1 point

Same with streaming media programme lists, same with google search if you never remove your cookies, which probably most mobile phone users don't. I haven't had a TV for for nearly 20 years, so this is really noticeable to me when I go to a friend's home and watch Netflix sometimes. His family's Netflix choices get narrower over time, and they end up bored with it because it now only gives them what they wanted before. They still carry on watching the same genres though. You don't want chocolate ice cream everyday, but that's what the likes of Netflix, Google, et al do, gradually restrict your choices and force you into a rut that becomes ingrained. Brainwashing basically. Social media is not distorting reality as such,.it has increased our exposure to exponentially more realiities than pre-internet times. We are overwhelmed by the number of windows we can see through. On any given night, pre-90's, probably 30-50% might be watching the same programmes at any given time, quite often. Eastenders, Coronation Street, and televised national events easily pulled 25 million viewers ... that was half the UK population on one channel.... one window of reality. That doesn't happen now because of the plethora of media choices. Us older ones sense this but we often don't realise why. Nationally, countries populations used to share a common media reality, and now we don't. I'm afraid us older ones are the new Luddites, as happens with every generational change, and the younger ones will seamlessly accept it because they know nothing else. The consequence of the internet is that there is much less local, national and global synchronicity of shared perceptions and intersubjective realities, therefore, the chances of sharing the same opinions within large groups is much reduced now. This is a major reason, I think, for the increasing disharmony in the world now.1 point

Radiation is a rather broad area. Radiation from the sun heats the earth. Radiation from the sun help humans to synthesize vitamin D. Ionizing radiation on the other hand can be quite dangerous and deadly at high levels of exposure.1 point

The deepest we've ever drilled is about 12 km, and you need to go about 2900 km to get to the outer core. As you and Phi point out, you don't have to do that to tap into geothermal energy.1 point

I spend a lot of time watching youtube videos and I've noticed that some of the less reputable sites are using buzz words to try and get you too watch lately "massive" seems to be the word of choice ie " Scientists have observed something massive near the Sun" or " Scientists have observed something massive on the Moon" I am just waiting for "Scientists have observed something massive emerging from Uranus"1 point

Thanks mate and like I said, Putin is a lousy strategist just like Hitler was..:) Let me introduce you to my 6" wargaming trophy, it sits on its own small table in my living room, carefully positioned so that it's the first thing guests see when they arrive and I can keep steering the conversation towards it during the course of the evening..:)0 points

Thanks guys, it seems Global warming and Climate Change have always been occurring through earth's history, but nowadays we dumb humans are accelerating the process.- "Dr Joeri Rogelj, Director of Research at the Grantham Institute, Imperial College London, says, 'Global warming and climate change have both occurred throughout Earth's history. But it's the speed at which the world is currently warming, and how fast the climate is changing, that is so concerning.' The surface temperature of the planet has increased around 0.08°C per decade since 1880. However, the average rate of increase between 1981-2019 has been more than twice that rate. These changes are unquestionably the result of human actions."-1 points

Yes I'm a shatterer of worlds like the rest of 'em..:) I've also got an interest in other fields but they don't grab me as much, for example chemistry is too smelly, and biology is too stomach-churning. PS- I do however take a healthy interest in theology and am fascinated by the 'Superscience' throughout the bible, for example Ezekiel's sighting of a flying craft that looked like "wheels within wheels" could be a gyroscope-powered thing..:)-1 points

The Jewish priests and Romans were in cahoots mate, it went like this- PILATE - "I find Jesus not guilty" PRIESTS - "Whoa bub, he said he was a King so that makes him guilty of treason against your Caesar who's the only true king. If you let a traitor off the hook it'll look bad on your military record and you'll end up slopping out the latrines in the Colosseum".. PILATE - "Hmm yes, okay I'd better sign the death warrant to cover my ass" -------------------------------------------------------------------- "And Pilate said unto them the third time, Why, what evil has he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore whip him, and let him go. And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed. And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required." (Luke 23:22-24)-1 points

The snooty Jewish priests never liked JC- 1- "Just you stick with me chum" 2- "Thanks JC, you're my main man" 3- "Hey kiddo why do you bother talking to commoners like him?" 4- "If you're looking for trouble Charlie, you've come to the right place" 5- "My dad's got your number!" 6- "Now get on your bikes and 'oppit!" Logic it out mate, why would anybody sit down and write the gospels and risk getting thrown to the lions? Motive?-1 points

As somebody with a scientific background, the Bible fascinates me because it contains the full range of all kinds of paranormal phenomena and close encounters with offworld beings etc. For example- “There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.” (Genesis 6:4) And we could speculate that modern truthseekers are descended from that ancient bloodline, not afraid to stand tall among the masses..:)--1 points

Yes, a few years ago Putin boasted he could take Kiev within 2 weeks (below), but as time is now running out to achieve that deadline, he's no doubt getting redfaced and might be tempted to go nuclear if he's mad and embarrassed enough.. And to add to Putin's embarassment, Russian military forces massively outnumber Ukraine's, so on paper should have waltzed into Kiev without much opposition--2 points

If you expect me to pretend something is my field when it's not, you're gonna have to get yerself another boy..:) None of us are experts in every scientific field, for example as a single man I know nothing about women but am hoping to learn from the experienced men of the world in this forum. I remember as a kid asking my mum where babies come from and she replied "You buy them from hospitals for £15 each", but as I've grown older I'm beginning to suspect otherwise.-2 points

Jesus had a huge fan following- "Large crowds from Galilee, the Ten Cities, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him" (Matt 4:25), And he pulled crowds of over 5000 and 4000 at two gigs alone (Matt 14:13, Matt 15:32) His run-ins with the snooty priests were a huge talking point among the people- High Priest- "Jesus of Nazareth alias the Messiah, the Christ and the Son of God, you stand accused of upsetting us real bad, how do you plead?" Jesus- "On yer bike Jack!"-2 points

The same thing has been said about US forces in other wars, but as a military forum moderator and- ahem- online computer wargame champion, I can tell you it's just propaganda hogwash because nobody is going to deliberately waste munitions bombing kindergartens instead of military barracks and troop concentrations etc..:) PS- our western pro-Ukrainian anti-Putin media seems to forget that Ukraine has been bombing the Donbas separatist area for years, causing civilian collateral damage like this--3 points
