I mentioned it earlier in the thread, perhaps the best solution, is for a Russian/s to take matters into their own hands and take him out, before any chances of the unthinkable happening.2 points

It's a long thread to look through... Can anyone tell me if the fact that the slap might have saved him has been considered? It's possible that such a slap would have pushed him out of the way of a meteorite.2 points

Are you guys really claiming Chris Rock'c comparison of Jada P Smith to G I Jane ( Demi Moore ) was a put down ? Have any of you seen the movie ? She was one of the hottest women of the 90s, and really rocked that shaved head. The only other womaan that even came close was Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2, especially when she handled guns.2 points

I'm always confused with panspermia. I've always seen it as taking the problem somewhere else. The formulation of plausible molecular mechanisms for life in a variety of plausible scenarios is what's key for me. Whether it happened in a young Earth or in a young Mars or Venus, is kinda lateral to me, as all young Solar-System planets that are candidates are similarly extreme and alien to us from the limited confines of eukaryot, multicellular life. I just love your last thought, and brings me memories of Carl Sagan. I have that feeling very often.1 point

Here are other examples of "rare" controversial moments with the Oscars. One that comes to mind was giving the wrong presentation. Another from the following link, was with regards to the classic movie, Gone with the Wind......."Actress Hattie McDaniel made film history by becoming the first black American to win an Academy Award, winning for her role as "Mammy" in "Gone With the Wind." While the award was an honor, McDaniel had to face racism and segregation. McDaniel was only allowed into the ceremony upon the intervention of the film's producers. Even then, McDaniel was seated away from the rest of the creative team at a segregated table, making this historic win an example of racism". or 1973: Marlon Brando declines Best Actor for 'The Godfather' https://stacker.com/stories/3816/15-controversial-oscar-wins-and-how-theyve-aged I have yet to ever watch them, other then news items of the event. Bores me teriffically to tears.1 point

In hindsight the joke was probably in bad taste, I don't believe it was intended as a dig at Jada's condition or to purposefully demean her in anyway. Will's reaction however was totally wrong, so I believe there is a difference. Nice PR stunt though.1 point

I'll give you two badges. One for being a dumbass. Another for when you lose the first one.1 point

Alcohol addiction is a very serious state to be in. Government mandates can't change that, although it may reduce new users in the long term. Same with gambling addiction, it will have just moved underground. This is not a uniquely Russian problem, it's the same everywhere. Prohibition solves nothing... it's cosmetic.1 point

When I watched the footage, two thing's struck me: 1. Will initially laughed at the joke. 2. Jada decided to take umbridge. She must have known, that by coming out and wearing that hat with pride, that not everyone will be grown up about it; if she can't take an immature jibe she should have worn a wig. In my view, she decided to be the victim in order to make her man fight for her, rather than with her. Much like a child stepped of the path and onto the grass; how strict are you going to be? And yes, I am being cryptic; sorry if that puzzles you...1 point

I wonder if Jada P Smith rolled her eyes when she saw this clip Or this one mocking gay people Or is his comedy not subject to the same standards he holds other comics to ? Remember the childhood saying ... " Sticks, stones, AND SLAPS, will break my bones, but words will never hurt me" ? When did we become so sensitive ?1 point

Whether it was a good joke, or not, or even whether it was funny or offensive is not the issue here. There have been plenty of bad jokes made by comedians, and plenty of insensitive ones; those are all subjective for the audience. What is not subjective is Will Smith's response; there is no argument that can be made to justify it. Does this really warrant further discussion ?1 point

No, it's not a question of how much science we do, it's a question of how much time have we got, to do it in? I believe it's certian, well 99.9%, that life exists in the universe; I'm far less certain that (intelligent) life exists in the solar system. 😆 Indeed, they didn't find that either. 🙂1 point

Thanks for that info StringyJunky. Most vitamin B Complexes contain Folic Acid (B9), which, as far as I can glean, requires a gene labelled something like MTHFR to convert it into folinic acid, which again in turn, requires a degree of further methylation to be become active and to cross the blood-brain barrier. So B-Complex could be useful. Obviously B-Complex is a start, but in my own case, I thought I would cover all bases by supplementing with the biological product next along from folic acid (folinic acid), just in case the enzyme produced by the MTHFR gene was not functioning properly. I'm lucky in that my vitamin D is high without supplementation (70s), but I also believe that everybody should take steps to ensure that their vitamin D status is adequate, because of it's necessity for overall health status. I can elaborate if anyone is interested, but it's a bit off topic.1 point

I can speak from personal experience on this matter because I was suicidaly depressed in my early 20s during my final year of my BVSc degree. I would say that I had not been coping socially over a period of years, and had been covering up my feelings of inadequacy with great difficulty. Life was simply not making any sense to me. It wasn’t that I was a failure. I was dux of my Primary Shool and Central School, and passed my secondary education with Honours in every subject. I had earned School Swimming Colours for winning a couple of races at Melbourne Inter-High School Championships, and subsequently was awarded a sydney University ‘Blue’ for Australian Rules Football. But one day when I was home on my own. I’d had enough and went to get my .22 rifle and actually took the first few steps to retrieve it and shoot myself. But then the mental picture of my mother coming home from work and finding my dead body, deterred me. I had empathy for the situation I would be forcing on her. I couldn’t go to a doctor, because the procedure in the early 1950s was to put you in a mental asylum, and I could not think of a single person, including my parents, that I respected enough to share my problem. I vaguely decided that I must had had a brain overload of some kind and decided to just lie on my bed as often as I could and consciously attempt to think of nothing. I did not read newspapers or books or listen to the radio or participate in discussions on anything. It seemed to help, but like Stringy-Junky, I had periods of depression on and off for decades. I felt that I must have been lacking in some essential brain metabolite or something. My mother knew nothing about nutrition, and while I was away from home doing the Veterinary degree, the main food I could afford was fish and chips. Some years ago, I saw some references to folic acid and folinic acid and commenced taking 800 micrograms of the latter most days. Bouts of depression have virtually disappeared to the point where at times I get the impression that I’m a pain-in-the-arse to some people. I realize that there are many forms of depression and that mine was but one form, but if you are interested in folinic acid and depression, this 2022 review is up-to-date -- Lam et al (2022; https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0753332221013287) in The potential use of folate and its derivatives in treating psychiatric disorders: A systematic review1 point

What? You mean the schoolchildren of the entire world have never before seen anyone hit anyone else? And now that they have discovered the joy of slapping, they will indulge it henceforth?0 points

Have you any reference for them starting at the same time? What do you mean by "roughly"? So why did you misinterpret what we generally mean by Alien in context with this thread? How do you know we will ever meet any alien for that matter? "we are them" is another rather iffy statment, so we will ignore that bizarre bit. Yes, that is for certain. Obviously you have none. What is it referring to then if not the universe or anything that followed that necessary first step? And generally speaking, when the word "creation" is mentioned and used, it inevitably is inferring a god. The universe evolved more then was created. ??? 🥴 Would you like to explain that? or at least give a link to where you dug up that phrase? 😉0 points
