  1. According to some quantum hype, you could do it with entanglement. Nice trick, @TheVat. +1 I must confess I did need a little bit of algebra. This is a cute little puzzle.

  2. As someone familiar with farming methods I would note that some current trends like no-till, controlled burns, "green manure," regionally-adapted strains, heritage varieties, drip irrigation, etc, all hearken back to ancient indigenous peoples and their cropping methods. European style farming has often been a disaster in drier regions (I have a parent who lived much of childhood through such a disaster), and will not sustain those 8-plus billion without incorporating some "primitive" indigenous methods.

  5. Can you give me some examples of "the 'extreme' side of woke" that aren't overreactions or misinterpretations or pure whataboutism? Because this is a pretty straightforward fascist tactic, trying to argue obliquely that examples of extremism invalidate any attempts to solve problems like this reasonably. And "creating more problems than it solves" also needs to be supported and clarified. Who is it creating more problems for? Whose problems are being solved at a lesser rate because there are extreme ends to the spectrum of solutions to discriminatory behavior? Lately I'm struck by the pervasiveness of the white European perspective in the US, and how much I've ignored it most of my life. I've been learning about Native American culture in general and in my area, and I'm astonished by the inaccuracies in what I was taught. I was told they were primitives who followed the buffalo, but the truth is they nurtured the land and created abundance without plows and European methods. The buffalo followed the natives, because the natives created seas of grasses for them to crop. They were far from primitive. Australia's natives did the same thing, and after almost ruining parts of Oz with European farming methods, indigenous farming is making a comeback. I don't think I'm being extreme or over-sensitive when it comes to correcting some of the bad information I've received in my life. And thanks to those helping me work on it through discussion.

  6. Just on this small point, the relationship between speed, c, frequency, ν, and wavelength, λ, is c = νλ. This is true of any wave (light, sound, water etc). So, given that for light c is constant, as observed by us (that being the basic premise from which relativity starts), once you have said its wavelength increases there is no need to say frequency decreases: the relationship is automatic. Everyone knows this, so that's why you don't see it mentioned. I'm not sure anyone would claim that it is the only interpretation. In science one never formally closes the door to other hypotheses. Surely the claim of science is that it is the leading interpretation, to the extent that there are currently no serious alternatives? I have read about the "tired light" hypothesis for example. This was tried by some people for a while but soon blew up, as it implied predictions that were not borne out by observation.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tired_light So the reason @Genady is asking you to put forward an alternative is that there are no viable alternatives that anyone knows about, at least not at the moment.

  7. Though in is case folks had to misinterpret a perhaps suboptimal study and create a fake title to make it extremely woke, no? There are issues with case studies in general (medical case studies share some of them) but the title of the article illustrates how to make folks focus on the wrong thing. The refusal of the commentary is, if anything, an issue, though I would have liked to see the reviews.

  11. Contempt requires you to assume your knowledge and understanding is better than their's, you have no reason to assume that; even if they're in a wheelchair and dribbling, because you might be talking to Stephen Hawkins, or his twin. Anger is for now not tomorrow, it's a base reaction to something you don't like, on the good end it stops someone from attacking you, physically, on the bad end it gives you an excuse to attack someone you JUST disagree with. Contempt implies arrogance. As demonstrated by @genio Serenity, regularity, absence of vanity,Sincerity, simplicity, veracity, equanimity, Fixity, non-irritability, adaptability, Humility, tenacity, integrity, nobility, magnanimity, charity, generosity, purity. Practise daily these eighteen "ities" You will soon attain immortality. - Socrates Not all eighteen every day, five a day should be plenty... 😉

  12. Still around... 79 in July but still doing OK...love a VB or two or three... Yes, I was pretty convinced that there was one or two making a mockery of it, considering I was continually supporting the scientific view and research and obviously the lack of evidence at this time. That view is still supported and actually re-enforced...but only a small reason for my absence, as I have been in Fiji also for extended stays.

  14. School promotes this type of mentality in a lot of people. Unfortunately. People get their degrees and believe they know everything there is to know because the books can't be wrong. right? Wrong. Science in books has been proven incorrect time and time again because of arrogance by some scientists. Learn to eat humble pie and you won't feel contempt.
