  1. First a fact, then a staw poll of 1 my observations. It is known that the body does not respond directly to the environmental temperatureby feeling hot or cold. Don't forget that your temperature is regulated quite closely. The feeling of hot or cold is most closely related to the rate of heat loss (or gain) and therfore theefoort the body has to put in to counteract that to maintain its temperature. Having noted that fact, I have noticed a few things. In colder times, you do not need to lift the temperature much above ambient to fell warmer and much more comfortable. I to 2 dgrees is enough for this effect. I agree with your comment. My experience is that when the temperature dropped from 20 most people say it's getting sold and bump up the temperature more than the difference. After a period of acclimatisation they no longer do this until the pattern is repeated at 18, 16, 14, 12 etc, as the ambient steadily falls with the season. Yet I find lifting from 12 to 14, 14 to 16, 16 -18 easily enough. Secondly I find that people (myself included) suddenly say it is getting cold on a falling thermometer but are perfectly happy with their preferred temperature (be it 15, 16 , 18 or whatever) on a rising thermometer. This is consistent with the fact that heat loss determines our 'temperature' sense. I also think that raising the temperature 1 to 2 degress must lower the humidity a bit, even if it does not always show on my insensitive meter. Hopefully this is of some help

  2. It's complicated but for most people (unless they are doing a lot of physical work, 10 degrees will be too cold. And that will be the case regardless of humidity. If you just heat up the air the relative humidity will fall and that will also add to comfort. The "wasted" energy from a dehumidifier will warm the room and be beneficial anyway. I last studied comfort zones in environmental engineering in 1973 and have long since thrown all those old notes on the bonfire (to keep warm ?😀) I'm sure the graphs of comfort zones, plotted on temperature - Humidity charts are on the net nowadays. In the UK the Office, Shops and Railway Premises Act 1963 presribes a minimum work temperature of 16oC But 10oC is rather cold., so I do't remember if this temperature is covered. The current temperature in this home office room of mine is 14oC and the humidity is 73%. Since the outside temp was 1oC last night and has been 3oC all day, lifting it only 1 or 2 degrees certainly makes it fell better but doesn't really affect the RH meter much. I'm sure I have seen a more recent stress tesing reasearch, and I think it was from the University of Bristol. However BigG can only find this from November last year on the BBC https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-63602501 I saw that programme as well. sorry about the rushed spelling.

  5. Depends on what’s comfortable. 90% relative humidity at 10 C will be 50% at 20 C. There’s about 9g/m^3 water; it takes 4.18 J/g to heat the water. Still, 50% isn’t particularly comfortable. If you want to reduce the humidity, you will have to condense water out of it. That means cooling it a few degrees and having the water condense, the reheating the air. Condensation takes 2259 J per gram. Removing the water takes a lot of energy.

I think humid air has two benefits in the cool season, one is comfort for skin and upper respiratory tract, the other is that humider air would have a bit more thermal capacity and reduce the number of heating cycles (I think most systems work more efficiently with longer spaced out cycles). That's a guess, needs fact checking. And I'm writing from a locale with distressingly dry winter air, where upping humidity is always desirable.

  8. If you keep it simple, by ignoring ripples and waves, then the force on each particle is effectively the force of gravity, so each particle tries to get as low as possible. That's what gives you a flat horizontal surface. Tilt the bottle, and the same thing applies. Any particle that's higher than the one next to it will sink a little, so you still end up with a flat horizontal surface. (relative to the Earth) When the car is just rolling, without braking or accelerating, the same applies. But when you brake or accelerate, you add an effective sideways force to the pull of gravity, so you still get a flat surface but it's tilted. It's as if you've tilted the pull of gravity, by adding the sideways force. Turning left or right has the same effect.

  9. What you call "the act of measurement", although I prefer a less exalted term: "interaction with the detector". To be more precise: An interaction that is amplified, so that the carrier of the piece of information "the particle was detected here" is a collectivity of quantum particles, each one with its own particular quantum phase, all of them decohering and making the entire universe decohere with respect to the teeny tiny coherent quantum state that you prepared. You can explain this with entanglement with the rest of the universe. It can be explained away in terms of entanglement. But not a two-particle entanglement. It's a super-dooper super mega entanglement with millions and billions of thermal states. That entanglement, if you will.

  11. Ohm's law for a capacitor??? Are you really designing microprocessors? Not my topic, but capacitors build up voltage until it is the same as the voltage in the circuit. Then it behaves just like a insulator, so the current stops (unless you overload it...) As the capacities you mention, the 4.7 μF is slightly bigger, so it would take a tiny bit longer before the current ceases.

Goverments and oligopolies sometimes use these maths to raise the prices a little more than it would appear to people untrained in maths. (1.01)10 is more than 1.1 (it's 1.1046), so ten increases of 1% increase more than 1 increase of 10%

Suffering is inevitable, because most animals produce many offspring, to cover for natural hazards. They can't all survive. If every individual frog spawn lived to old age, there would be a plague of frogs, and there would be no food to feed them. A human couple can have ten kids. Some have to die, to prevent overpopulation. In the natural world, most will die before they get to sexual maturity.

These people owned and ran farms and grew olives and dates and other cash crops. They sustained themselves for generations and then were driven off their lands and shoved into a tiny space without consent or due process of law. They didn't go there because Israel "made it nice." The Naqba ravaged their lives and means of economic autonomy and created a misery and anger that comes from that genuine condition and is amped up by each new round of brutality and heavy civilian casualties that Israel's many attacks have brought, and the ongoing degradation of being shoved into horrible conditions of overcrowding and restricted rights and various embargos. It's rather like someone knocking you down, putting their boot on your face and whenever you punch at their leg they cry, Look! Look how awful a person he is! He is a vicious leg puncher! No wonder I have to keep this boot here! Oy!

  17. It’s not the same $100. At the very least, it’s $94 after the first purchase. You’re adding an extra $6 in each step. But yes, more transactions means more tax. But it also means more income for the business in each step, and more income for the workers. The government is not the only beneficiary of a robust economy. $100 spent does not generally turn into $100 profit, that can be spent in the same fashion. The item purchased had some wholesale cost, and there is value added by labor. Not all money that is spent is subject to sales tax

  18. I don't think that's a valid way of looking at it as you neglect to include where the $6 comes from. It's from income (e.g. the money you spent minus the tax), and isn't infinite. Start with the $106 that you got from somewhere. You buy that $100 thing and $6 goes to tax. In your next step, that 2nd person starts with the $100 they got from you. They might buy something for $94.50 + $5.50 going to tax. The third person spends that $94.50 as $89.50 with $5.00 going to tax. ... it's not generating infinite tax. All that taxed money still had to come from income somewhere. (I'm tired, I'm making up the specific numbers.)

  20. The only argument is there is no real evidence on whether we have free will or is the future already determined. Based on the lack of any evidence to guide us I will have to go with gut instincts. It feels like I have free will so that's what I'm going with.

  25. That means you are repeating what you heard from other people. Unless you did investigate in person. Let's go further back. The Palestinians moved back from Egypt. They fought some other tribes and took over the land. They were later called Israelites. The history of that part of the world shows so many different peoples conquering and losing the area that it's a lie for any group to claim it as "our" land. Plus the times when all tribes had to abandon the area because of years of drought. I agree. It doesn't have to be binary. The people currently calling themselves "Palestinians" have no more ancestral claim to the territory than the Egyptians or the British. Winners of wars make rules and losers whine. When it comes to nations, "Might makes Right," is definitely a thing. World war 2 changed a lot of countries. The Israelis would have been wiser to refuse to build up the Gaza strip at all. They made it nice so Arafat decided to steal it. If Israel had left it undeveloped and stopped feeding them, the "Palestinians" would have moved away long ago.
