  1. I guess "Wanktank" might sound too much like a collection device...

  2. I just learned a British slang for pricey SUVs: wankpanzers. Perfect.

  3. Yes, groups of humans seem to fare better when a normative filter is applied to actions rather than people, e.g. look Zog, we normally don't defecate near the watering hole. And a high functioning autistic might be the one who, due to social awkwardness, focuses intently on optimizing the atlatl or bow fourteen hours a day and saves their HG band from starving. Neurodivergence has probably been a part of our species survival for a long time.

  4. But have you got the obligatory Hunter wellington boots and Barbour jacket in the boot?

  5. I almost lost my job once by demonstrating the leidenfrost effect with molten polymer. I used to work for Dupont and we made polyester. I often ran experiments for various engineers which meant I got to work with various parameters of the process which involved hot polymer 350c. I found that as long as the polymer wasn't degraded I could allow the polymer to pour into my hands and I could mold the thick molten polymer with my hands. The water/sweat on my hands protected me from the hot polymer sticking to my skin. I once showed a member of management this little trick and he lost his mind! He thought I was somehow burning myself to harm the company or something and called to have me escorted off site. The engineer I was working for had to set him down and explain physics to the guy... I kind of felt sorry for him. Hey I drive a Jeep, I prefer off road wanker.

  6. It’s more militaristic with a very clear top-down control mechanism, lots of underlings fighting and back biting, jockeying for position, clawing to get ahead etc. While we agree on the thrust of your point, will just point out that even the CEO must follow the whims and wishes of their Board of Directors, and they would further pass the buck by arguing they’re following the demands of shareholders. But the CEO is certainly the face of all that and again certainly nobody below them can refuse to follow their orders without risk of dismissal. It’s a bit like being deaf to a very specific note, but still hearing the rest of the music.

  7. I often wonder things like that myself. But then the buzz wears off and I go looking for some snacks...

  8. I worked with autistic people for a while and there was research implicating several genes that contributed to idiopathic autism by means of interacting with brain metabolism. Some of the candidate genes of idiopathic autism (90-95% of all cases) related to brain metabolism are AVPR1a, DISC1, DYX1C1, ITGB3, SLC6A4, RELN, RPL10 and SHANK3. As @Phi for All notes, there is a high functioning end of the autism spectrum, often referred to as Asperger's (many argue that "syndrome" should be dropped), where it can be fairly argued that this is a different cognitive style rather than a disorder. And that part of the spectrum may be less influenced by genotypic factors.

  9. It happens less often than two tall people having a short child. Autism is 50-80% heritable, height is about 80%. It helps to take the perspective that autism isn't a disorder (like being tall). I know that's not the current thinking, but the behavior I've observed is more divergent than abnormal.

  11. Possibly wankabrams didn't sound as funny. Nor would wanksherman or wankM3. (also, other tanks names, though they would convey the excessive mass and girth of the loathed SUVs, don't stand as a single word. Sherman tanks, Abrams tanks, et al, all need "tank" in their common usage, but Panzers...are just Panzers.) Afterthought: wanksherman, when heard, sounds a bit like a male resident of someplace called Wankshire. Which I would imagine is a place that could only exist in a comedic novel or sketch. Since there is actually a town in Newfoundland named Dildo, I cannot completely rule out the possible existence of a Wankshire. How Wankshiremen might feel about ambulato-mechanical onanists is an open question.

  12. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-68196828 The price went up a bit. Parking in Paris for so called non resident ambulato-mechanical onanists has now tripled.

  13. PCC reagent was first developed by Corey group in 1975. You can refer to this paper to see the details regarding its introduction. In regards to my background, I had to solve many Chemistry Olympiad problems back in high-school and I have seen this reagent overwhelmingly frequent. It seems it is used widely. Hope it helps.

  14. What you used there is the exterior Schwarzschild metric, meaning this is only valid in vacuum outside the central mass. If you want to find the time dilation between a clock on the surface and another clock at the Center of the Earth, you need to use an interior metric along with appropriate boundary conditions. This can of course be done, but is algebraically a bit more involved. As others have said, in practice this dilation factor wouldn’t be large.

  16. Some say you can notice this effect upon pouring liquid nitrogen into your cupped hand. I've never been brave enough to try it. Would that be strictly German pricy SUVs ?

  17. An ideal clock always ticks at the same intrinsic rate regardless of its location and motion. Time dilation is always about the comparison of the length of a trajectory in four-dimensional spacetime of one ideal clock to the length of a trajectory in four-dimensional spacetime of another ideal clock. An important part of this is how the two ends of each of the two trajectories relate to each other.

  18. Are you quoting this from somewhere? Somewhat predictable. Hydrogen masers’ drift has a component due to aging of the coating of the maser bulb, and my understanding is that it’s somewhat unpredictable in how it varies. You determine it by comparing to other clocks. “constant environment” would be things like temperature and humidity
