The biggest problem with pop media coverage is they tend to be very misleading. They never tell the full story and typically strive to drive reading interest with sensationalist claims. What the pop media coverage fails to mention is just how truly difficult it is to calibrate for standard candles. Whenever more sensitive equipment is used, you will invariably encounter calibration issue. Specifically environmental calibration such as local group light pollution, peculiar local group velocities, etc etc. A great deal of research has been recently published in regards to using specific standard candles of our local group for benchmark calibration this then gets applied to the luminosity distance relations. This also is being applied to the Hubble contention between local group datasets give rise to a different Hubble constant than datasets using the CMB. A good example you may be familiar with was the calibration issues in regards to the axis of evil from the first Planck dataset. (Dipole anistrophy) The other issue of course being were not clear on just how long it takes for a galaxy to form in a much higher density past. The same goes for primordial black holes. Then there is detail that look back time used to determine the age of the Universe involves the cosmological parameters and Hubble constant. Any variation in two datasets concerning those will determine a different age for the universe. Though the difference typically isn't too significant. I've also seen later studies showing distance corrections to previous far field measured objects via filter calibration (filters for luminosity both hardware and software) in regards to JWST This paper I posted in another thread in this forum is a recent JWST study to determine the Hubble constant by the method I briefly described above is one example. It doesn't find any need for new physics in regards to Hubble parameter. Though this paper is in regards to the Hubble contention the studies It did on the cepheids it uses also get applied for far field measurements. https://arxiv.org/abs/2408.061531 point

It's all good if you keep posting in a decent manner such as you did on your return here. https://www.scienceforums.net/topic/134508-the-moon-earths-little-sister/ Then any neg rep points will quickly disappear.1 point

One significant difference the moon has no erosion while the Earth does. It's more likely the Earth was hit more frequently due to higher gravity but due to erosion the evidence has long been wiped out. +1 for the considerable improvement in thread quality.1 point

Well said, I agree with much of your conclusions but the penetration of 3 kilometers is a bit short. A large impact that makes an 800-kilometer crater will penetrate almost to the center of the Moon even with a slow impact. Yes, I have returned from the past. Thank you for being hopeful of my return. I have been studying the Moon for some 48 years so I am more than happy to elaborate and debate the topic in a civil manner. Over time many celestial bodies would have come close to the Earth, The Moon is just the one that came too close and hit. I believe the Earth never had the vast number of craters like the Moon, it was too big and hot so all the impacts were leveled by the heat. The craters on the Moon are from its own debris field that orbited the Earth most of which returned to the Moon very little to the Earth.1 point

The Szilard letter, warning Roosevelt not about fission but specifically of the danger of Nazi Germany getting an atom bomb, was written by Leo Szilard, in collaboration with Edward Teller and Eugene Wigner. Szilard persuaded Einstein to sign it, correctly believing that would carry more weight with Roosevelt and those advising him. Far from warning of the dangers of nuclear fission, the letter insisted it was vital the USA should start its own bomb programme. This became the Manhattan Project, which took over from the already existing but underfunded British Tube Alloys programme. Einstein ran from the Nazis because he was Jewish, as did so many eminent other physicists in continental Europe. Hitler stupidly created a massive brain drain of scientific talent. So that was simply rational self-preservation on Einstein's part. I'm not sure where you get this about him uniting people. How do you think he did that?1 point

After running into the problem numerous times of my latex getting changed to rich text format. I noticed a couple of repeatable and consistent causes. For example if you have latex in your post and try to insert an image or hyperlink to another website this will more often than not cause the latex instructions to drop and the post entirety seems from my end to switch the post to RTF. Do not know if this is repairable but I mention it for everyone's awareness. (010) The last switch occurred simply due to thread merge. The latex was placed in a separate post but the merge operation switched it to rtf. This was what I had actually typed minus the latex command brackets. (010) Lol that activated without \[ command brackets on merge. Both lines were using pmatrix latex format.1 point

As I was leaving the art museum, I got arrested for stealing a painting. I don't understand. Earlier when I asked the guide if I could take a picture, he said yes.1 point

I've never been too keen on the neg reps, especially for newcomers that have no way of knowing how the rules are going to be interpreted (if they even read them...(put up your hand if not a mod and have read them all...a quick scan notwithstanding) Some grandmothers are fine with F-bombs, while others, not just grandmothers, might be offended by the language in your second paragraph, and be a little surprised it's actually a +1. Should they not be welcome here while they adjust? The mods can weed out the bad ones without our help...beyond reporting of some of the worst posts. Just my $0.021 point

! Moderator Note Moved from Suggestions, Comments, and Support to The Lounge. Actually, treating a discussion like a one-way street is called soapboxing or preaching, and it's against our rules. If you feel someone is soapboxing (ignoring replies in favor of continuing to assert their stance, for instance), please use the Report function. Continued use of preaching and fallacious arguments can result in being banned. We're all just here to discuss science topics in a civil manner. We attack ideas, and sometimes that can look like we're attacking the people that have them, but that's against our rules. We don't attack people, but we do call out bad behavior and we definitely jump all over ideas that aren't physical or have some basic flaw. It's not personal.1 point

This is a good topic for you to do some experimentation on your own. For instance you seem to be suggesting that a steel ball felt heavier than a piece of wood. Take a short length of wood etcf eg a rule Spread out one hand and lay the rule across all the fingers of that hand. Now low some fingers, one at a time. Does the ruler feel any different as you do this ? One thing to remember is that our brain/nervous system receives an enormous amount of sense data. All our sense data is filtered so that only some reaches the brain. For instance can you feel the pressure of the ground on your feet ?1 point
-
It's less about pressure itself and more about how it's focused. Consider pressing the end of a 2x4 into your palm where the mass is interacting with multiple areas of your hand. Now consider doing the same, but instead of a 2x4 it's a toothpick. Both made of wood, but the force is focused into a tighter spot. That makes it perceived as more intense. Every sensation is just the activation of receptor cells of various flavors and varieties. Those receptors activate a set of electrical impulses across your nervous system, and your brain interprets those signals once they reach it. A knife and pipe are both made of metal, but pressing them into your palm results in a totally different experience due to how the force is focused vs. spread out.1 point

I won't attempt to directly answer your question but something you might like to investigate, which is related, is a much under-recognised sense we have called proprioception (if that's how it's spelt - my spellchecker also 'under-recognises' it.) This sense is not the sense of touch - which we are all familiar with - but the internal sense of e.g. where our limbs are in relation to our body. I hope you will find that an interesting study. I would say that we certainly sense pressure: you can easily distinguish between a gentle and not so gentle push, for instance.1 point

Indoor skydiving apparrently works by means of a "vertical windtunnel" blasting air upwards at about 150mph, so novice skydivers can gain experience of floating. Could vertical windtunnels be installed on a much larger scale around very tall buildings to be uncovered and switched on in the event of a rapid evacuation? Would it be possible for people to have jumped from the top of the World Trade Centre at 1368 ft to be caught safely in a vertical windtunnel at the bottom? Cheerz GIAN🙂XXX1 point

That happened because someone cut corners on a relatively cheap simple thing (insulating cladding) to save money. How would you prevent that happening with your very expensive idea? In what way is your idea better than having a simple fire escape (of the sort I see in American films)? https://philadelphiaencyclopedia.org/essays/fire-escapes/1 point

It happened where I live in the UK; in 2017 a residential tower block called Grenfell Tower which was a mere 24 storeys went up in flames, and people couldn't escape from the upper floors above the fire, so 72 lives were lost. What about a frame at the foot of the building with several layers of flexible material like a multilayered trampoline. Could a fall from the top of the WTC 1300ft be broken at the ground by a succession of layers? I know it sounds a bit far-fetched, but as things are there seems no way of rapidly evacuating those insanely high skyscrapers you have in America. I've not been able to establish what if any evacuation mechanisms there are inside the new World Trade Center building "You know, one of these days, you're gonna kill 10,000 in one of these firetraps, and I'm gonna keep eating smoke and bringing out bodies until somebody asks us how to build them." Thank you, a gentleman at last. I was told my post was worthless and I was accused of saying things in my post that were never said that's why I started to bite back. I was called a troll before I got offenseive as well. Thank you for your honest support. I will try to keep my hat on from now on and turn the other cheek. Have you ever heard, don't throw stones if you live in a glass house? Yes indeed, I have calmed down now but I was provoked by others, Told my post was worthless, and accused of saying things in my post that were never said. Anyway, all is well My problem is that I am accustomed to Nuckels, not the white glove. Some people sing, and I tap dance.0 points

Goodday sir or madam, My name is Pascal Leon Breugem. For the past 10 years I have been (and am) being manipulated by an organization that specializes in behavioral improvement. They are sociopathic and if you don't dance to their tune they will continue until you listen. The system they use is a particle accelerator that they hack. With this particle accelerator they communicate with my mind. They literally talk to my thoughts. They can also electrify devices or people and track you, just like with infrared. Because I was manipulated, I tried to commit suicide twice. I normally would never have done this... In addition, I broke my elbow during the manipulation process. You would think that people as smart as them wouldn't behave so barbarically, but unfortunately that is the case. They are now quietly manipulating me. Still, I want my life back in my own hands as soon as possible... Who knows, you can help me? With the particle accelerator you can also see an individual's thoughts on a screen. Via a connection from CERN... During the manipulation process I wrote a number of poems. From this an expert could conclude that I cannot have schizophrenia... In addition, I have hundreds of evidence of hacking and electrifying my phone, TV and other electrical devices... I also have proof through: an ultra HD photo showing that electrifying my thyroid gland has caused half of my eyebrow to fall out. At the moment, the only solution seems to be to temporarily move to the other side of the world. Or find someone who can make the particle accelerator unhackable. I tried to reach Michael Benedikt and Michael Riordan but was unsuccessful. If you could reach them or military intelligence you could save me. Prove: 1: Htc One M9 destroyed by electric shock. Can't even get it on in the boot menu anymore. 2. Hard drive verbatim with phone clone S10 with evidence of multiple identity frauds and IP redirects. And app hacks and browser hacks. And Keylogger files, Fitbit log, Map timeline, App backup. 3. SD cards with screenshots and screen recordings. 4. Samsung galaxy S10 with a LOT of evidence in the form of screenshots, screen recordings, app hacks, keylogger files, screen logger files, G-Sensor log, and email addresses full of emails that were sent but never arrived. There are also several police reports that never arrived (WITH Reference Number). 5. Keyboard for mixer box of which 1 key has been broken and manipulated with the particle accelerator. 6. USB stick with evidence of power manipulation. 7. Photo of a fallen eyebrow (ultrahd) due to electrification of the thyroid gland. 8. Report to the F.B.I. that has been cleared at customs: NEVER ARRIVED.* 9. Recordings of voices transmitted by the particle accelerator. 10. More than 50 I.P. redirects. While I was at home... 11. Samsung S21 with hundreds of screenshots of sent contact forms that were later removed from the recipient. And thousands of sent emails that have been removed from the recipient. 12. ABN AMRO app. Hacked in a way that he continues to load. 13. 1.1.1.1 (Warp) Dnschanger Hack. Cannot add atachments at the contact form.
