  1. I think it's probably better that way - I don't really like traditional story-telling techniques provided by English teachers, although a Historian would be pretty helpful to have around to have a credible world - even if it was fantasy or Sci-Fi based. Good call Gutz - I haven't seen that particular anime, but I'm really tired of the happy endings all the time. There was a (mostly) chick flick a few years back called atonement - I actually hated the movie all the way through until the end. It wasn't necessarily a sad ending, but the way it ended was totally cool, and I started liking the movie immensely. - I also agree with Pangloss however in that the Japanese are sort of masters of story telling right now - most of the coolest movies I've seen in a long time have been either anime, or Japanese. However, I don't know about the world being shallow - I mean it is, but it's right on the spot for the intended audience I think. I'll admit to reading I think 6 of the books, the first 6, and personally I like Rowling's style of progressing the story - the way she develops characters is pretty cool, and adds a certain level of re-readability to the books.
  2. Indeed I am - I drink alcohol, but I do so responsibly. I dislike being around smoke of any kind outside of campfires, my nose seems to flip me off anytime I do. Thus the aforementioned "as long as it's inside" - I don't mind other people doing whatever they want to do, as long as a: they take care of their family and b: I can still go places I want to go, without having to smell anything worse than exhaust in the air Hell if stabbing yourself with a fork were addictive, I'd be all for whoever wanting to do that, as long as they didn't come bleed all over me. I'm not interested in the welfare of these individuals, so much as I am them annoying society/providing crap for their family
  3. You have to remember Obama's background too, he's helped a lot of small neighborhoods that have probably had severe drug problems - that would cause a lot of personal bias
  4. Nice, I used to be a game design student! I can agree kinda with Pangloss above, J.K Rowling has apparently done something hugely successful if people are comparing her to Lord of the Rings - of course I think it's a lot easier to get your books known and in the world now than it was 100+ years ago
  5. I don't think so, personally - too many things that life is dependent on that doesn't happen to be in space in a consistent enough manner to support life. Would a carbon based life-form even be able to enter space without a suit of some sort? Even if you filled the cavities in the body, I don't think so. -if it is, please someone post how, that'd be sweet, I would own one
  6. Weren't they also played by the same guy in the movies? He was pretty much the coolest part...though I liked the Potter movies FAR more than I like being bored by LotR movies. Interesting as I've read the Lord of the Rings series twice in its entirety. Not sure if many people would pay attention to this genre in this forum though..
  7. Honestly I don't have a problem with anyone wanting to partake of the substance, it's just I'm extraordinarily selfish in that I want it affecting me as little as possible. I think I'll be a lot happier to the legalization if we can keep smokers away from me - regardless of people who do smoke and doesn't think it affects anyone else, it really does, tobacco or otherwise. Maybe if all the trustworthy MJ society members to promise to keep it inside
  8. While I do agree that they have a responsibility to get those taxes from the government if in fact they really DID over pay - it was blatant incompetence that got them into that position in the first place. I understand companies calculate taxes wrong all the time, but they usually find out a bit earlier than this - I think the main concern right now is that we're throwing billions of dollars at a financial institution that fails time and again to produce evidence of fiscal responsibility.
  9. As much as I laughed and shared this article, I'm pretty down with that comment. Technically, if they really DO feel they overpaid taxes, they should be trying to get it back...I don't know if you can do that legally without suing. But then again ... at least it made me laugh
  10. EDIT: Sayonara beat me to the question
  11. It means I'm completely against the entire play, and I hope when it happens (cause I think it will) I won't have to deal with it. Personal bias of course, founded on personal experience, but I still think it's a bad idea.
  12. Unless you want legal rights taken from all marriages, the government will need to use some form of the word, and I don't see why or how they should honor religious institutions - atheists don't, and they're still married. Nobody owns the word, as has been discussed, so why can't everyone use it? I respect everyone's right to their own opinion, but I could care less about religious beliefs when they think they're being offended. to my last understanding, the OP of the thread actually doesn't think Same Sex marriage should be in effect either, but would go for another term, it's one of the reasons this thread spun out of the other. Indeed not, minority opinion is how everyone learns and grows - I'm not about to start flaming your posts, but a lot of what's been said against Same Sex marriages have been ridiculous and irrelevant, and still haven't given a solid example of a good reason to prevent them... regardless of the insane notion that some hold that, had the founding fathers known about same sex marriages, they would have outlawed them. Which is also ridiculous, and presumptious
  13. I can feel the day of legalization in the flow of time...it chills the bone. By that time I hope to have fully automated my house so I don't have to have contact with the outside world, so I won't care
  14. Indeed, that was very interesting, thanks for posting it up there. I think they shouldered a bit too much on Bush, but I really think, well nevermind what I think about Bush - I don't know that we're directly in line to keep expanding as a country if our citizens are fiscally and morally irresponsible, I should move to Japan
  15. That's a slippery slope, but for the most part I have to agree. I've always thought the financial district was insane about how they did things, but I didn't think it would screw up everybody - clearly something needs to change
  16. Oh yeah, I don't know what my brain was visualizing... I think I was using a much faster swing as a rationale, as well as wider than 45 to each side. I think YT's experiment helped at least to demonstrate that the swinging bucket will empty faster? That was the original question, after all - and simple, per the OP's request
  17. I don't know guys - once the water gets to a certain level, it'll start staying mainly on the sides of the bucket and avoiding the hole. How big a hole are we talking here?
  18. Hi Darkchilde, If you like the astronomy and maths part of science, you're definitely in the right place! Have a look around, I'm sure you'll find plenty to interest you
  19. You have to remember that our educational standards are ridiculously low - too many people would rather quit trying because they can't find unskilled labor and then try to milk the government - which I find stupid, but happens a lot. If we can get education to increase, we can start supplying less to unskilled labor and throwing more at skilled labor, which will inevitably create new and different skilled positions, and increase demand for the lower skilled jobs. I also agree with Pangloss - just because you can live off of such low earnings, doesn't mean there aren't a lot of things that are being neglected because of it. If we can stop illegal labor from being exploited so much, we might be able to bring the standard of living up a bit in the U.S - I personally am fine now, but I've lived in a lot of poor and shady neighborhoods growing up, and I don't think it's a good place for us to be expanding.
  20. I understand exactly what you mean, I just don't see the fairness in expecting them to fight and spend so much more time to get the same thing. Heterosexual - marriage license Homosexual - fighting through legal systems and usually overturned or upheld, but usually dropped by the couple out of frustration before this With respect, polygamy is completely different than same sex marriage, including more people and legalities in regards to where that road could lead to, probably a dozen other things I can't think of, because I'm not talking about more than two people getting married. I probably did misunderstand, so is what you're saying then that because there aren't a lot of the G/L crowd trying to fight against these laws, we shouldn't do anything about it? Where are we going with this? I don't think anything would be hurt by them dropping the word marriage, especially if they used a blanket term - but realistically, I don't see this being a feasible option. What? Where in the original context of the law did same sex marriage get outlawed? That's a recent act and movement, far more recent than same sex couples are. Those states were voting to uphold something else that was recently set in place to prevent same sex couples from being married. I know a few people in particular who wouldn't give a holy gosh freakin' darn about what you called them personally, as long as they could be married AND do married things, all those laws and privelages
  21. Understood - as I've said, of course you can do it. I think you're taking points and re-arranging them, or I suck at my explanations. Let me try again - You can, indeed, get that legal agreements can be written and are inexpensive - but what if the same sex couple wants all the benefits inferred to married heterosexual couples? You don't think they'll find a lawyer who's going to make that effort for that $200 do you? I don't think we need to go back to the trolling part, it's distracting from the interest I must say however, my friend, you've been severly misinformed. I don't know any same sex couples looking for religious acceptance, and are often aloof and uncaring about what ridiculousness religious crowds may throw around. A majority of the crowd wanting same sex marriages is really trying to get the same legal rights, with the ease of a single document - that marriage license. The last part of your post, i.e "the G/L folks seeking - etc. etc." is an opinion swinging itself like a fact, and is quite offensive not only to the G/L couples themselves, but to the great number of people wanting to get equality for them, and those avidly opposing them - same sex marriage is bothered with all the time - those 'benefits' you're talking about are legal, real, and inexcusably being denied. You have such a way with words. If you don't want to back the analogy, why'd you write it?
  22. Dudde

    Thanks!

Trying to make up for the 4 -odd years when I wasn't posting, I have a long way to go! You and Mooey are really making some good conversations to reply to though =D

  23. Wow. That was horrible. The analogy, the reasoning, were you even trying? That whole part about you support same sex couples a while back seems ridiculous to me now. Scrappy, your entire last post basically posted "if they do it differently, they shouldn't be allowed to do it" - at least what I pulled out of it. So you're telling me that if blacks really did drink with their noses, you'd be all about banning them from the fountain? Even if they didn't touch the fountain with their nose? The argument that they have the same rights because they can marry members of the opposite sex is ludicrous, and I'm not addressing it again.
  24. That's a good point, he's shown his capability of using that tactic several times since January. That would be pretty sweet - although I think he's gambling a lot on his confidence, I hope he can deliver
  25. I agree, Obama's been cool up til now, but he seems to be a glutton for beating himself with the American public, it doesn't seem a healthy trend. interesting article though. I doubt he'll get as far as to include companies not receiving bailout money
