That seems to be Pink Floyd's view too, "Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way" I think their advice was: run rabbit run. I don't think you'll find too many hard core lefties in the U.S. Too much distrust and outright hatred for the federal government to hand everything over to the bureaucrats. For some reason the mistrust does not extend to corporations for some reason. Handing Exon Mob the oky doky to dispose of their garbage in you're state seems to make you a contender for president. If you complain you'll probably get called a lefty.

Ferguson conflict - What is the problem, and how to solve it?
moth replied to CaptainPanic's topic in Politics
The investigation of the police department makes it clear the current situation is a money machine. Looks like a great way to keep taxes low. That's all that matters, right? Ferguson’s law enforcement practices are shaped by the City’s focus on revenue rather than by public safety needs. This emphasis on revenue has compromised the institutional character of Ferguson’s police department, contributing to a pattern of unconstitutional policing, and has also shaped its municipal court, leading to procedures that raise due process concerns and inflict unnecessary harm on members of the Ferguson community. Further, Ferguson’s police and municipal court practices both reflect and exacerbate existing racial bias, including racial stereotypes. Ferguson’s own data establish clear racial disparities that adversely impact African Americans. The evidence shows that discriminatory intent is part of the reason for these disparities... - ferguson_police_department_report.pdf -
I'm not sure I'll need much support as this is all far beyond my abilities, but thank you for the offer. Cooper pairs seem pretty bazaar. Is it possible to explain Cooper pairs by overlapping or interacting wave functions?

Thanks Mordred. I've been trying to read as much as I can, but only found one or two indirect mentions of superconductivity. This seems like an amazing result from the experiment in the article. That the wave is some configuration while the particle accelerates sounds reasonable. The particle accelerating because the wave is some configuration is a mind bender. Apologies for mis-spelling Aharonov

I noticed this article on propelling sub-atomic particles and the Aharanov-Bohm effect. My limited understanding is that by manipulating the wave function of electrons using interference, they produce momentum in the electrons. I remembered that the same kind of interference patterns obtained from a double slit arrangement can be seen whenever there are two distinct paths, for example around a very thin wire or possibly even around an atom or molecule. Just wondered if anybody was familiar enough with superconductors to comment whether or not the interference between loose electrons and the atoms in a superconducting medium could interact like this to produce current?

What if instead of modifying one person to become superhuman, everybody was modified to have less of an impact on our ecosystem. The Dead Kennedy's song "Shrink" comes to mind. But maybe something less drastic, like an overwhelming desire to walk and recycle.

I thought that was my gig. not that i'm any good at it, John Cuthber is much more reliable, but i like to run my mouth sometimes. I was just wondering if they could be using temporal cloaking to miss the droplets?

Shame on you you should read Swans on Tea

+1 for Irony.

I agree with you, forgiveness, and a realization that we're all in this together seem to me the ideal way to move forward. It just seems to fail "in practice". Also sorry, I meant to +1 your earlier post.

Be careful what you say. Too often, people who suggest such things seem to find themselves nailed to "trees". I wonder if there is any way to remove the "profit oppertunity". Real estate developers make money building settelments, political parties generate a lot of cash promising vaporware solutions, and of course arms dealers and manufacturers find blood money just as spendable as less shameful sources of cash. We need arms unfortunately, so it seems like we need to find a line between defense industry and war industry.

a humble suggestion about the rep. system

Or maybe the upvote-downvote buttons are too close to be distinguished on a small touchscreen, and i over-react to baffling input. Thanks everyone. I do see now there are good reasons for anonymous dissent. -
The great Seas and Rivers of the Supercontinents.
moth replied to Mike Smith Cosmos's topic in Earth Science
Hi Mike, I've been hoping to find more time to submit a detailed post, but my dis-organized approach to schedule has left me with too many loose ends needing attention. You may find the geology of New Zealand worth a look. It is formed of material eroded from the shore of a super-continent, and it's location on a plate boundary give it an interesting array of geologic features like fast growing mountain range ,volcanoes and alluvial plains. Absolutely BEAUTIFUL country too. -

a humble suggestion about the rep. system
moth replied to moth's topic in Suggestions, Comments and Support
The neg. rep on the post you are talking about provoked my suggestion. I felt inspired by the thought, and can't imagine why somebody found fault in it. I definitely would not want to encourage any who feel that repeating themselves is like an argument. Although the situation is generally resolved as you suggest, there are times when I can imagine no fault in a position and wonder if I'm blind, or the critic is just an ass. -
a humble suggestion about the rep. system

Oh well, I will always see it that way (as a sign of surrender on the neg repper's behalf). -
One of the hazards of anonymous voting is people who can't or won't support their positions are still able to express their judgement with a negative vote. Maybe the system could be augmented to invert the votes of drive by naysayers, who have given no reason for their opinions. This could motivate some to try and explain themselves.

+1. I have always suspected that was the answer . Fardels

If you know somebody with a magnetic induction heating element, you could try cooking the egg in a glass bowl.

The conversation may seem flat in some places, but there are some interesting twists.

If you where able to understand forward and backward along a line that makes a trip around the Mobius and returns to its starting point, and depth, a dimension orthagonal to that, but not the dimension orthagonal to both (the width of the strip) . The picture seems analogous to time being represented by the width of the strip. But I've had a couple beers...

Is it a 2-d analog of a Klein bottle?

Thank you for the visualization, Janus. i was trying to do this in my head, but i was ending up with crossover Mobius' strips. Awesome photo Imatfaal Edit:sp.
