  1. i'm looking at the online version of sci-am(no 'script right now) but i read "But if singularities can be naked, their unpredictability would infect the rest of the universe. " and my mind wandered as i read the next paragraph or so. maybe destroyed is too much, but they should be conspicuous, so it seems like we should "see" them. i did a quick look around for what happens to all that angular momentum from nuclear spin during black hole formation but i can't find anything (anything i can understand). do you know any overviews for newby's that include this?
  2. i thought the sci-am article said naked singularities would "leak" quantum fluctuations like gravity waves or exotic particles.

    Vectors...

i'm just getting started with vectors but maybe this is what you're looking for? [math]cos\theta[/math]=[math]\frac{\stackrel{\rightarrow}{A}\cdot\stackrel{\rightarrow}{B}}{\left|\stackrel{\rightarrow}{A}\right|\left|\stackrel{\rightarrow}{B}\right|}[/math] as i said i'm a beginner but i don't think you need the actual length to the sun or hydrant if you use unit vectors.
  4. thank you for taking the time to answer my question.if only everyone were like you we could all be as informed as we are curious by simply asking a question. i think it's unlikely naked singularities exist for the same reason cosmic censorship was created, we would have detected them or been destroyed by them before now.
  5. what is rotating in the complex plane? a star? anyway naked singularities won't be black so what do you think would be a good name
  6. i'm in way over my head but are you saying it will have quantum spin like an electron?
  7. sorry i was thinking of the shape not the collapse.
  8. try this http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/HBASE/electronic/trangate.html
  9. maybe a parasitic companion?
  10. no? http://boards.history.com/topic/The-Universe/Anti-Matter-From/800038416 maybe? http://arxiv.org/html/physics/9812021
  11. i was going to vote agnostic (is that a cop-out?) but "cannot have knowledge" seems too high a bar. have no knowledge would be easier to choose.
  12. i thought this was a good description of the matter http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physics/Relativity/SR/mass.html

    E=mc^2

it's the energy that would be released in a matter to energy conversion. if %100 efficient and everything goes well. the energy needed to accelerate something is it's mass times the acceleration Merged post follows: Consecutive posts mergedcheck out this thread for a tour of different conversions http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=37601
  14. when you move away from where and when you made the map it will need corrections with the Lorentz factor Merged post follows: Consecutive posts merged they can get back to a place where they both agree when "now" is but they will disagree on how much time has elapsed since they first separated.
  15. the example shows the foil configured with a sharp end and a blunt end to keep them aligned with the field. planets are not shaped like that
  16. the electric force has two poles +,- gravity only has one (that we can see). if the sun charges the solar system it all has the same charge and like charges should repel so it would fly apart like anti-gravity
  17. maybe you could use electric current in coils under an aluminum plate to generate eddy currents in the aluminum plate that have a magnetic field strong enough to levitate a magnet above the aluminum plate.
  18. each twin has a different perception of how "fast" time is passing. one twins "now" could be the other twins 5 minutes. how long does "now" last?
  19. if an electric field looks like a magnetic field depending on the direction of motion of the reference frame, does that mean photons are coming at us from two directions at once? (maybe past and future?)
  20. once the twins start moving relative to each other they start having trouble agreeing when "now" is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relativity_of_simultaneity
  21. symmetry would seem to be a fundamental property, proof of rotation or translation in other dimensions.
  22. maybe it has to do with the one-way nature of time. even though it should look the same whether you think of it as the ship accelerating away from earth, or earth accelerating away from the ship, you got in the ship and did something so everything changed for you. if we could calculate our "true" length contraction we would know our velocity relative to a universal frame, but due to our limited perception we can only measure the change in our length contraction
  23. next thing ya know yer sayin stuff like Υ this is a guess but i'd say when you stopped accelerating you are in an inertial frame but your mass has increased so now you need more power for the same acceleration. check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Momentum#Momentum_in_relativistic_mechanics
  24. could you build the cable factory in geosynchronous orbit and feed the cable out in that orbit as it was created and when it was long enough to reach the surface, electrostatic forces could be used to pull the ground end down through the atmosphere? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrodynamic_tether
  25. it would be nice if it were easier to tell whats in the lectures but they sure beat tv so i just watch the whole series(click related when you find one you like). did you try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_of_mathematical_symbols between that (really basic)page and the links under "see also" you can probably find any symbols you're looking for
