Money does not exist. They are just bits on computer disk. Rare metals are interesting to have here on Earth (they would stop being "rare"), depending on their usefulness for human kind. I don't see a problem in having abundance of f.e. Gold (from Gold-asteroid), it could be used to protect against cosmic radiation. (jewelry industry would not agree with me ) If human will survive the next few years without nuclear war etc. etc. I think such journey for asteroid will be inevitable.. It does not have to have precious/rare metals to be worthwhile to bring it near Earth. Simply it will be source of fuel for rockets (Hydrogen and Oxygen) on far orbit.

Are we Living Inside a Simulated Universe?
Sensei replied to Simulated Science Guy's topic in General Philosophy
Application that has modular structure, with one core, and modules/libraries/extensions/device drivers (OS), is easy to develop by team of programmers. Simply one programmer is responsible for writing and maintaining one module. Programmer who wrote code of module/library/extension knows it the best, while other team member doesn't know it and can't modify it. Application which has no modular structure, is very hard to write by team of programmers. They simply will overlap and interfere work of other member of team. ps. I up voted, unnecessary neg vote.. -
IMHO, one of the biggest structural American problems is that high quality university education is not for free. It creates castes, rich people class who can afford going to university without a blink of an eye, middle class which have to take huge loans and then years and years return them, and poor people who can't afford education. They are excluded from gaining knowledge. And in capitalistic country model they are almost locked in this state for generations. Only the best percent of percent or less will get some kind of scholarship and try to break this madness cycle. Better education is equal to higher income in the future. How rich people are getting richer? They just need to make paid education and wait..

Are we Living Inside a Simulated Universe?

Game developers are currently hiring team (hundred or thousands of people) of gfx artists, musicians, programmers, beta testers and so on. And telling them to "build the world" of game. It costs millions/billions and takes now years of programming until game is fully finished. This is completely not needed. One can by himself/herself write simulation of the Universe, just interaction of sub-atomic particles, within let's say 6-7 days of programming.. And let spontaneously A.I. appear inside of it, after billions years (of simulation, so in reality it's "blink of eye"), and let them build entire world with the all complexity by them self, every time it'll be different. Lighter version of it is used by many game developers already. Procedural random generation of landscapes. But it requires having building elements prepared by artists. Every time it's different looking world (every time the same looking would be dead boring). -
Liquid (and moving) metal in the core is the most accepted theory of formation of external magnetic field around planets. "Mars possibly hosted a core-generated magnetic field in the past.[18] The dynamo ceased within 0.5 billion years of the planet's formation.[2] Hf/W isotopes derived from the martian meteorite Zagami, indicate rapid accretion and core differentiation of Mars; i.e. under 10 million years.[13] Potassium-40 could have been a major source of heat powering the early Martian dynamo.[17]" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planetary_core Google for "liquid sodium magnetic field" for articles about experiments created in labs on Earth. Liquid metallic core can't last forever. Planets are cooling down. Radioactive isotopes increasing temperature and keeping core liquid, are exhausting.

That depends on what is meant by "major".. Major size? Major velocity of wind? Major loss of lives? Major loss of infrastructure? This statement is certainly wrong, because in 2011 there was Irene and Lee, worth 18 bln usd and 70 deaths.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Irene Sandy (worth 75 bln, ~140 deaths) was one month after article. Now, this year 2017, you will have at least 6 (including Franklin)... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Atlantic_hurricane_season Now add 2011-2017 together.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Atlantic_hurricane_season https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_Atlantic_hurricane_season https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Atlantic_hurricane_season https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_Atlantic_hurricane_season https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Atlantic_hurricane_season https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Atlantic_hurricane_season According to above wiki pages, Lee in 2011 was not even hurricane, just tropical storm, still caused loss of >1.6 bln usd..

If you received list of chemicals by their formulas, search net (f.e. Google) for each formula, and in search results there will be Wikipedia page link about compound. Read them all. On the right side of each chemical wiki page there is mentioned whether compound is soluble in water or alcohol and in what solubility (in g/100 mL typically).

In evolution once created feature does not disappear just like that, when offspring succeeded. Feature would have to be useless (like tail) to disappear, and it would take hundreds or thousands of generations. If early Paleozoic fishes (or their precursors) would be hermaphrodites / Intersex , amphibians, reptiles and mammals also would be hermaphrodites / intersex (the most likely). "A rough estimate of the number of hermaphroditic animal species is 65,000.[6] Since the estimated total number of animal species is 8.6 million, the percentage of animal species that are hermaphroditic is about 0.7%."

The historical use of diet to treat homosexuality
Sensei replied to ritastrakosha's topic in Psychiatry and Psychology
There are known certain foods to increase desire (aphrodisiacs), like seafood, oysters, especially liked by ancient Romans, Greeks, Irish, Gauls. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphrodisiac "Raw oysters really are aphrodisiacs say scientists" http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1486054/Raw-oysters-really-are-aphrodisiacs-say-scientists-and-now-is-the-time-to-eat-them.html Avoiding them, obviously should decrease desire for sexual intercourse. Regardless of heterosexual/homosexual orientation. -

You omitted couple key issues of Philippines.. The Philippines is regularly attacked by typhoons.. Their strength will increase because of devastation of environment by human (on the entire Earth). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typhoons_in_the_Philippines 20k dead in XIX century in the one typhoon attack, in recent history XXI century 2006 year 6300 dead people, in 2013 year 10,000 dead people: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/nov/10/typhoon-haiyan-thousands-dead-philippines The Philippines can be attacked by tsunami.. https://www.worlddata.info/asia/philippines/tsunamis.php Duterte made his own hit squads, and introduced terror in country, anybody can kill anybody now... "President urges officers to kill dozens of drug suspects every day after series of 67 operations in province north of Manila" https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/aug/16/philippines-police-bloodiest-night-duterte-war-drugs The Philippines is now a very unstable region and will be worse in the future. Copper abundance can be harmful to some people. "Wilson's disease is a genetic disorder in which copper builds up in the body. Symptoms are typically related to the brain and liver." "Wilson's disease occurs in about 1 in 30,000 people. Symptoms usually begin between the ages of 5 and 35 years. Males and females are equally affected. Do you have idea what is hash function/hash value in computer science? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hash_function Thorham has list/array with 256 entries which are pointers to further lists. That's why he is doing AND 0xFF at the end to limit index to only allowed number of entries.. He will calculate hash (index to the top most list/array) from element, and then put element in the appropriate list (at appropriate index)...

in this particular case, if you have equation (or computer subroutine) returning you sum from i....j elements. But you have to know sum of k....j elements, where k>i You can use previous sum i...j and subtract sum of i...k-1. f.e. sum from 1...10 is 55, Sum from 1..5 is 15 Sum from 6...10 is equal to sum of 1..10 (55) minus sum of 1..5 (15) = 40 ps. I see you mentioned this method in the post above, when I was in the middle of replying..

Download Apache OpenOffice and try whether it's able to open your .xls file (first copy it from flash drive to regular disk). Some applications won't be able to open proper file, if they request read-write-exclusive IO mode, when they're on read-only medium, or when somebody else already has read-write access to the same file. Copying file to new location on HDD can help in such situation.

Quarks and anti-quarks in Standard Model classification of subatomic particles. Anti-quark is different from quark, opposite charge, opposite quantum numbers. He meant "neither quark mentioned by you" (up/down).. (but other strange/charm/top/bottom and their anti-particle equivalents)

Display of GUI takes tiny fraction of time of currently existing regular computers.. One can have GUI display in the real-time on AmigaOS v1.0 running at frequency 7.14 MHz... Current Intel the lowest-end laptops have 2 GHz dual-core (like 4 GHz single-core). It's 4000 / 7.14 = 560 times faster just looking at frequency of CPUs... MPEG Video with resolution 720 x 576 can be decoded in the real time using CPU running at 33-40 MHz, without using any GPU.. Currently existing computers are extremely easy to use... And everybody can learn computer programming C/C++/C# within one month or so.. It's just a matter of willingness.. I could learn chimpanzee how to program computer, just give me one young enough chimp.. -

When I read about "burning american flag on the moon by laser" the first time, I read it as burning flag leaved by Apollo astronauts.. Then I thought: WTF?! Then I realized you might want to do the stupidest ever made thing in the world, and make new flag, burning moon to look like american flag... WTF?! ^ 1000 ps. Let's suppose so, weekend after liters of whisky/vodka/beer is not good time to reply on scientific forum...

It's energy density/specific energy, rather than energy. Energy density/specific energy is measured in J/m^3 (E/V) or J/kg (E/m). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_density https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Specific_energy Yes, it's important. If you will try to use 12 V battery to lighten up LED diode (which needs <3.5 V) you will lose a lot of energy (or there will be needed voltage dividers etc.)... You're not taking into account two things: - density of medium (Al = 2.7 g/cm^3) - whether battery will be possible to be made rechargeable. Battery which is impossible to be recharged, is useless for automobile industry..

He meant that there are mesons and baryons that contain no up-quark and no down-quark. Just quarks and anti-quarks from 2nd and 3rd generation of quarks (up/down are 1st generation of quarks). Example phi meson https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phi_meson Leptons from 2nd generation are decaying leptonic pathway exclusively. Leptons from 3rd generation are decaying either leptonic, semi-leptonic and baryonic pathways. And they have no any quarks or anti-quarks (in Standard Model classification of subatomic particles). Example muon https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muon
