How do you manage anger for what is happening to this world?
Sensei replied to starchaser137's topic in Climate Science
..you are doomed not because water is shipped half the world in plastic non-returnable bottles... but because politician's the only response to any ecological (and not ecological too) problem is: INCREASE TAXES. Shortage of water? Increase water costs. Too much trash? Not segregated garbage? Increase garbage collection costs.. etc. etc. The all people on the bottom of economy, are exploited the most, and suffer the most, and they are discouraged from any pro-ecological activities.. When I see politicians talking about yet another increase of taxes, I know they don't have idea what they are talking, they don't have idea what they are doing. And ecology, global warming, is just yet another pretext to increase taxes.. Instead of true fix.. The example of ecological problem: do you want to have streets free from beer glass bottles? Instead of deposit for the bottle (which is transferred to the end client), shop should be able to sell only 95-98% of quantity of beers which bottles clients returned. e.g. in the first week they sold 1000 beers, they must get back 950-980 bottles back from clients, to be able to sell another 1000 beers the next week. If they won't collect them, they cannot sell beer. Shop will beg their clients to come with empty bottles. Otherwise they won't earn money on beer. Glass bottles returned to the shop, are reused without having to melt glass and/or fresh sand, which saves energy (coal/gas used to heat furnace etc). Trucks have to return plastic containers, with bottles, or without bottles, anyway. So more optimal is if they are full of empty bottles. It's fight between industry producing glass bottles with ecology. The less people will return empty undamaged bottles, the better for companies making these bottles. They will get broken glass from trashcans anyway, melt it, and sell it once again to beverage companies. In classical method of solving this issue i.e. deposit for the bottle, shops regularly refuse to accept empty bottles ("because they were not purchased here" or whatever they want reason). Clients are pissed off. They paid for beer in the bottle, paid cost of deposit for the bottle, and they can't get their money back. Bottles end up in trash, are smashed, and make even more garbage on the streets, and cities look like garbage dumps... -
Many commercially sold fruit trees, and other plants, can be asexually reproduced i.e. vegetative reproduction: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetative_reproduction https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fruit_tree_propagation https://www.google.com/search?q=vegetative+reproduction+apple "Apples are mostly propagated by shield budding, which gives a high percentage of success. In shield budding a single bud along with a shield piece of stem is cut along with the scion and inserted beneath the rind of the rootstock through a 'T' shaped incision during active growth period." https://apples.extension.org/apple-tree-propagation/ "Asexual Propagation Because the seeds (sexual propagation) produced by apple fruits are the result of cross-pollination, the resulting seedlings are not genetically identical to each other or to the “mother” tree. To create multiple copies of the same cultivar, asexual (i.e., not sexual) — also called vegetative — propagation techniques are required, and apples are easily budded and grafted." You don't buy "apple tree seeds" but ready "apple tree seedlings". "Apple seedlings are small, propagated tree stems grafted onto a hardy root stock. Seedlings are ready to plant and grow in the home landscape once they have grown in a propagation environment for about one year. The seedlings grow into a producing apple tree six to 10 years after planting. Proper planting and care of apple trees at both the seedling stage and as the tree matures makes growing the trees a rewarding process." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grafting "The technique is most commonly used in asexual propagation of commercially grown plants for the horticultural and agricultural trades. " Currently existing commercially cultivated fruit and plant species are result of centuries of careful breeding and mixing. Wild apples are (typically) small, sour and green. Farmers spend centuries to create big, sweet and red apples.

@Kartazion If your machine has HTTP/HTTPS server, you can make simple PHP script which will make/update file by file_put_contents() somewhere, and examine date and time of the last access of the file from bash script. If access time is more than 5 minutes ago, refuse SSH connection. So procedure of logging would be: open browser on mobile or so, visit your top secret PHP script location, then login to SSH or whatever else. If somebody does not have idea that must visit website with the right URI with script first, will be rejected.

@Holmes Thanks @studiot for bringing this interesting information. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/fish/facts/clownfish "Changing Sex" "Surprisingly, all clownfish are born male. They have the ability to switch their sex, but will do so only to become the dominant female of a group. The change is irreversible." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sequential_hermaphroditism "Sequential hermaphroditism (called dichogamy in botany) is a type of hermaphroditism that occurs in many fish, gastropods, and plants. Sequential hermaphroditism occurs when the individual changes its sex at some point in its life.[1] In particular, a sequential hermaphrodite produces eggs (female gametes) and sperm (male gametes) at different stages in life.[2] Species that can undergo these changes from one sex to another do so as a normal event within their reproductive cycle that is usually cued by either social structure or the achievement of a certain age or size.[3]"

BTW, did not you hear about e.g. XXX, XXY, XYY etc. ? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trisomy_X "A relatively common disorder occurring in 1 in 1,000 women, trisomy X is rarely diagnosed; fewer than 10% of those with the condition know they have it. Diagnosis of trisomy X is complicated by its mild presentation; many girls and women with an extra X chromosome show no symptoms significant enough to inspire formal testing." (so there are ~ 4 millions worldwide people with it) "The first known case of trisomy X, in a 176 cm (5 ft 9+1⁄2 in) woman who experienced premature ovarian failure at the age of 19, was diagnosed in 1959 by a team led by Patricia Jacobs." (so it pretty fresh discovery and not fully well understood branch of science) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XXYY_syndrome https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XXXXY_syndrome ...and more variations at references.. That looks like a fake created by mockers.. No, it's not a social construct. Some incompetent people and mockers who want to ridicule and disqualify LGBT, are persuading that it is a social construct and somebody can be artificially transformed by just discussion about it.. If they don't identify as male or female they should not participate in male or female sports either.. Otherwise they would have to lie that they are male or female, if they truly don't identify with these genders..

DNA is made of H, C, N, O, elements, but they are not just made of identical elements, but also isotopes H-1, H-2, H-3, C-12, C-13, C-14, N-14, N-15, O-16, O-17, O-18 etc. etc. If you take two (long enough) "identical" DNA chains and compare not just elements but also isotopes, you will find that they have different isotopes in different places in the chain.. So they are not identical at quantum level.. Simpler example, water can be made of H2O, DHO, D2O... add to it isotopes of Oxygen and you have even more possible variations. With obviously dominant (H-1)2(O-16). Just because these isotopes are the most abundant.

Except everything around you is some kind of chemical or (usually) mixture of chemicals. Therefore to get pure chemical compound, you need to learn how to separate them. @Ethan1234 For a fun starter project, prepare sodium acetate. In the kitchen you can find acetic acid (vinegar) and sodium bicarbonate (i.e. baking soda) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinegar https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_bicarbonate https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_acetate

Laboratory gllassware i.e. beakers, flasks, condensers. Entire starter kit set will cost couple hundred USD. Vacuum pump costs ~ $500. Here you have the list: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laboratory_glassware You should read methods of separation to learn what equipment you will need: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Separation_process

A person with bipolar disorder during mania phase can spend the all their money (and borrow more, if they can).. on completely senseless things.. Buy 15th unit of the same thing which person already has? No problem! Drug abuse and extensive money spending are two the most common and visible symptoms of bipolar disorder among affected people. https://www.google.com/search?q=bipolar+disorder+spending+money "Spending sprees may be a part of manic episodes for many people with bipolar disorder. Manic episodes of compulsive spending are a problem for many people who have bipolar disorder. During these episodes, people feel richer than they really are, more powerful, and willing to take more risks." https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-08-01/money-budgeting-bipolar-disorder-mental-health/12495852?nw=0 "Kim Cochrane didn't think twice about giving away a car, an antique grand piano and lending thousands of dollars to friends. While she knows she can't really afford it, it's a symptom of a mental health condition she's lived with for more than 25 years. If you live with bipolar disorder or are close to someone who does, it can be very difficult to manage your finances."

Some actions, or lack of them, might cause immediate death, so there must be taken immediate action to save life. In such situation brain orders production of hormones e.g. adrenaline: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adrenaline e.g. working memory, short-term memory disorders. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Working_memory#Aging In this article you have catalog of disorders: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_disorder

Crypto-cancer fade out end of civilization for Fermi paradox?
Sensei replied to Duda Jarek's topic in The Lounge
In 2020 BTC was for $6k-$12k for ~ 10 months, and just started growing in November - December'20. 49% from $6k-$12k is $3k-$6k which is within my electricity cost bracket. This can be said about any miners. e.g. gold miners were using Mercury to extract precious metal (and still use in 3rd world countries) *) Devastation of environment by open pit mine is common practice.. *) search engine keywords "gold mercury amalgamation mining". https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patio_process (for silver extraction) -

Well said. It is the main problem of capitalism.. Please, please, stop using these made-up by you numbers.. f.e. costs of mining 1 BTC is $5000-$8500 (the other source says about average $4160/BTC) *) The more advanced technology they use for mining i.e. specialised mining devices like antminer, the lower cost. If they would also invest in private solar panels grid **) and/or wind turbines the issue of too much electricity usage would be non-existing.. *) Search engine keywords "BTC cost of mining". **) which is marginal in comparison with the price of antminer.. $250-300 per 1.4 m^2 solar panel vs $10k for antminer.. no-brainer.. -

@Duda Jarek Counter examples that it will stop automatically at 11 B: - Japan has a population density equivalent to 50 billion people in the world. They continued reproducing when national food production reached 100%. Now they import ~60% of all food from abroad. https://www.google.com/search?q=japan+food+shortages "Japan is the world's second biggest economy but it struggles to produce enough food. The government says only 39% of the food the Japanese need is grown in Japan. In contrast Britain produces 70% of the food its population needs and France more than 120%." " Japan’s food self-sufficiency ratio on calories basis was 79 per cent in 1960 and had declined continuously reaching 39 per cent in 2015.[6]" -

@Duda Jarek I think you misinterpreted my previous statement. What I meant is "I would rather take the lesson from Calhoun's experiment..." + "...because it is the most plausible source of Fermi paradox, rather than your cryptocurrency mining"... Existence of cryptocurrency mining in such form as now, is only possible in societies where money (and gaining wealth) is the main motor of people's activity. In societies where people share everything for free, existence of cryptocurrency mining, fiduciary currency, banking systems, economical crisises, hungry and poorness etc. is not possible (has no sense). There is/was old crowd distributed computing project S.E.T.I. @ home https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_for_extraterrestrial_intelligence i.e. "give us your computer power for free when machine is idle, and we will use that power to search for extraterrestrial intelligence (or whatever else is needed in alternative projects)". And guess what? People were not that keen on it (at media publicity), as they are now on cryptocurrency mining... There was no immediate money reward for it (therefore people reluctance). Even if they participate in serious and/or useful scientific project offering what they can for goodness of the entire humankind. In the Calhoun's experiment mice had free and unlimited source of food, so they (without being aware of what they are doing) did nothing but have sex and children, several generations per season ("sky is the limit" as some says). Which caused quick overcrowding of the limited area where they were living. Higher level organisms living too closely are extremely stressed (increased amount of wrong/inappropriate hormones during pregnancy of mothers resulted in homosexuality of offspring etc.), agressive, misbehaving etc. Current world is extremely focused on survival! If 70% of US average citizens have less than $1000 savings, and ongoing bills to pay, over and over again, they are just two weeks of being unemployed to bankruptcy or other financial problems.. I imagine such modern people are much more extremely stressed by such ongoing life, than ancient/medieval peasant thousand year ago (which could be stressed by survival of cold winter and having to hunt at winter if had shortage of gathered food).. -

I don't think so cryptocurrency mining poses any serious risk for human existence. At the beginning of BTC mining was done entirely by CPU. To speed it up and earn more and faster, GFX card code was created. Later it was replaced/extended by specialized mining devices e.g. antminer (unit cost $10k-20k!). This shows progress, evolution, industrialization, professionalisation of miners with time and "depths" of their pockets. The higher bills for electricity cryptocurrency miners will have to pay, the more likely they will invest in their own private solar panels grids (or other low cost power plants) to reduce costs. *) Natural route of evolution of this technology would be creation of satellites which would be placed on orbit and get much more energy directly from the Sun. e.g. put programmable**) antminer (or equivalent) in SpaceX satellites and offer Internet for free to the all people. *) If I would be cryptocurrency miner, I would get cheap electricity at night when cost is the lowest or even negative price i.e. power plants pay to get their electricity at night. **) It could be used to any heavy computation not just cryptocurrency mining. -
