  1. I've been busy painting the apartment. My apologies. Why does happiness trump intelligence in your case? And how are you able to use technology and still be happy? In my experience, I was happy(internal stimulation) all the time when I removed all the external stimulation. Maybe it is impossible to be always happy in our present society with all the external stimulation. Pursuit of happyness was also about "realizing your potential" but I was mainly talking about the underlying premise of the movie. How the main character acquired knowledge and used his skills, basically intelligence, to succeed in coming out on top at the end of the movie, basically equating the acquisition of a well paid job with happiness. As for Gattaca, I couldn't take it seriously because ethan hawke smokes. But a person requires intelligence to acquire objects. What about empathy? Its more of a presumed desire to fill that empty hole they feel inside themselves and those who make ads use the sale of products with a happy woman against our psychology. A person requires intelligence to get a job though, so they can eventually acquire products and services. They do still buy these type of useless products and services. Such as Omega 3 fatty acids. I agree and this mostly applies to the 25 year old and younger not fully developed mind. Are you sure you aren't confusing passion with happiness? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I hope I am not asking too much, can we take it a little further and define happiness?
  2. Of course, faster with proper nutrition. ie. avoiding processed food.
  3. Oxytocin or maybe romantic movies give the wrong impression on how a intimate couple actually functions in their relationship. Maybe these young men are mislead by the media to believe real relationships work like they do in romantic movies and act exactly like the submissive men in these movies or act like the jerks in adult movies or act macho like the men in action movies.
  4. Isn't personality derived from the mind?
  5. mind mīnd/ noun 1. the element of a person that enables them to be aware of the world and their experiences, to think, and to feel; the faculty of consciousness and thought.
  6. I remember watching The Pursuit of Happyness and how the subliminal definition of happiness in the movie didn't line up with my experience of happiness. The movie equated financial success with happiness while I equate physical activity(ie. adequate serotonin levels), a healthy diet and a minimalist approach to life with happiness. I've also observed that society is driven towards acquiring intelligence and not happiness. If you had a choice to be either intelligent or happy but not both even though it is possible to be both. Would you rather be intelligent or happy? And why?
  7. This is mainly what I was asking.
  8. No. I mean't asking a question regarding my question with another question is a presumption on your part. Sometimes when I sit in my car and a manual transmission car beside me rolls back or moves forward, I experience the illusion that my car is either rolling back or moving forward while my car is infact standing still. This experience scares the hell out of me because I fear I will hit the car in front or behind me. Nonetheless, an illusion. If there are unanswered questions, why are most scientists agreeing with the big bang theory as it were fact?
  9. Because it is a presumption. The question can mean different things to different people. To a thinker it would suggest thinking and to an observer it would suggest observation of both sides of the discussion. I asked because the OP and most people believe that the universe is expanding while there is contrary information on the internet which suggests that the universe isn't expanding but it is merely an illusion of this supposed expansion.
  10. Why are you answering my question with a question?
  11. I am obviously no expert but how is personality or memory stored in what I presume to be the neurons?
  12. What if the expanding universe is an illusion? Then does your question still apply.
  13. Reverse desertification. More plants, more oxygen, more ozone?
  14. Excuse my ignorance. Where is our personality stored in the brain?
  15. The gender imbalance seems like a problem that doesn't exist. I think more damage will be done if certain women are pushed psychologically towards scientific careers they have absolutely no interest in. Some women prefer to have a big family and not chase a scientific career because someone said that they have to be "somebody". I have no problem with women in science. Just make sure it is what you really want.
  16. Deidre, "If someone is happy with his or her own life, confident and satisfied, in essence 'at peace,' then that type of person has no reason to be arrogant." -Sounds like happiness and mentally stable. "Usually people who are arrogant, feel that they are inadequate, so no matter how intelligent, successful, attractive, wealthy they may be, they don't feel content with their lives." -Sounds like unhapiness and mentally unstable. Like something is missing. Have you ever been arrogant?
  17. Tridimity, You're basically saying that you wouldn't work with an arrogant person regardless of whether they were intelligent or not. You bring up some valid points and I have another question. Do you think arrogant people know that they are being arrogant? Deidre, Your definition of arrogance gives off a vibe that arrogance is a side effect or manifestation of mental illness. If I understood you correctly, how can it be a choice? I agree that we all have issues however I don't believe we are helpless with these issues for life. For me, physical activity brings out my best side and inactivity brings out my worst side. I'm glad we can move forward in a positive direction.
  18. This thread is/was about why a non-arrogant person like a genius would be perceived as arrogant. An arrogant person gives the illusion of being superior mentally while a genius just is without showing off. Maybe I made a mistake with the title. I found her definition of arrogance exceptional because on a certain level, arrogance displays a problem that is going on mentally with the individual displaying the arrogant behavior.
  19. This answers my question. I enjoyed your perspective since I never thought about it like this. What I think your comment boils down to is who we surround ourselves with is what ultimately matters in regards to how we are perceived. You clearly misunderstood my previous comment. I complimented you on your(?) definition of arrogance since I thought it was very insightful. The second part isn't even about you since I don't even know you in person. Why would I insult you? Maybe you have some kind of inferiority complex(?).
  20. Thank you for sharing an exceptional definition of arrogance Deidre. I guess curing the insecurity would cure the arrogance? Physical activity as a cure perhaps? What I meant to ask was if the behavior of a humble genius, such as being independent and solving problems independently with an exceptional ability can be misunderstood as arrogance from a mentally inferior outsider looking in at the actions of the humble genius.
  21. Proper nutrtion as in a diet rich in plants. Many nutrients in plants have been shown to reduce tumor size.
  22. I think you misunderstood timo.
  23. Impossible since I don't go out of my way to prove them wrong. So I should be a pushover and let them belittle me when they engage the conversation further after I've told them that they have been misinformed?
  24. Can someone be arrogant without ever saying a word though?
  25. Computers can't produce their own code and memorize it. We win.
