Yes but it is entertainment that is ABSURD "Good guys vs. bad guys" as if THAT is a realistic proposition, and it looks FAKE "Lots of action" at all times. It is a strange melodramatic sport. All other sports try, at least for appearances, to play it fair and realistic. WWE acting is not better than football (soccer), sorry to differ. Pro wrestling NEVER looks at all realistic, but every moment looks fake. Each gives a speech calling his opponent a "total loser" and how he is the greatest of all time. Each is ACTING like they are inflicting pain on the other and yet each pulls his punches and throws to not hurt the other. It is some kind of strange, contradictory and stylized Kabuki dance. It would be hard for me to watch it for more than a few minutes, like trying to watch a Trump rally speech.

Are there any fans of pro wrestling out there? If so, please explain it's appeal. It looks so fake and absurd that it is hard to imagine what the fans love about it. Trump is a big fan of pro wrestling. Recently I learned that Trump's fans are fans of his role as "heal" in politics. In pro wrestling, the protagonist is called the "face" and the antagonist is called the "heal." The fans may love or hate either. Sometimes they boo the "face" and sometimes they cheer the "heal." Trump's fans probably have a high correlation to pro wrestling fans. Trump plays the role of the obnoxious heal, and his fans love it. https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/03/trump-politics-and-professional-wrestling/473652/

Why is there something rather than nothing?
Airbrush replied to Vexen's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
Exactly, and that is why we can't say anything about the shape of the early universe at t = 10^(-43) seconds. Dark matter is a good example of something that is very substantial, and yet invisible. You are thinking of dark energy when you say "causing the universe to expand" but at an accelerating speed. Instead of saying "There is no such thing as something that came out of nothing" just say "We don't know of any examples of something coming from "absolute nothing." This is really a discussion about "absolutely nothing" and not about empty space that appears to be nothing. Big difference. -

None of us are giving "confident" answers. Just give us your best guess for discussion sake. Maybe even an educated guess. Nobody knows....big deal. -
Thanks for posting that StringJunky! That first wave is incredibly beautiful in slow motion. Frightening! That is a very violent wave and I would avoid it. That must be the step-faced Shipsterns Bluff TZ right? It's a slab wave, like Teahupoo Tahiti, which means it breaks below sea level, like in a huge dark pit. It's like watching a train wreck, you can't look away. The wave has no back, it's the whole ocean behind it, like a tsunami. The lip is thicker than normal and it throws forward as much as it's height so the white water explodes higher than the wave height. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_Stern_Bluff

Pole vault and big-wave surfing, which I rarely hear anything about in the news. As an American I also always loved to watch pro football, basketball, and soccer, for sports widely broadcasted. Baseball is boring as hell, and hockey you can't see what's happening because the puck is so small! Boxing is barbaric and should be banned. But you don't hear much about what's happening in pole vault or big-wave surfing. The year before I entered high school a good friend, Eddie, who was a couple years ahead of me got a few others of us interested in pole vault using a big bamboo pole. We built standards to hold a cross bar and it was so exhilarating to clear 4 or 5 feet high using a bamboo pole. I was eventually able to clear 6'6" that year using a broken fiberglass pole that Eddie salvaged from high school, when their star vaulter broke his pole. When I entered high school, at Bosco Tech in Rosemead, I wanted more than anything to go out for the track team so I could pole vault. By the end of my freshman year I was able to clear 8 feet, by the end of my sophomore year, 9 feet, and by the end of my junior year I cleared 10 feet using a fiberglass pole that did not bend at all. After that I left high school and never vaulted again. Few people know that only 2 humans on planet Earth ever vaulted higher than 20 feet, Sergey Bubka, a Ukrainian, dominated pole vault for 23 years, since 1991, when he cleared 20 feet (6.1 meters). The next and only other person to ever clear 20 feet was a Frenchman, Renaud Lavillenie, who set a new record in 2014 at 20 feet 2.5 inches (6.16 meters). See the great moment below. The elder man in a dark suit with blue necktie is the great Sergey Bubka who congratulated Renaud on his accomplishment beating his old record of 6.14 meters. Interesting to note that Renaud was 5'10" tall and weighed only 152 pounds! For big-wave surfing there are 4 outstanding waves that were ridden: (1) Ken Bradshaw is credited with an 80-foot wave at Log Cabins, Oahu, on 1-28-1998 (it was not photographed and only some grainy video exists). (2) Laird Hamilton claims that Brett Lickle towed him into a wave over 80 feet tall, there were no photographs or other witnesses, Brett called it "10 stories tall" (100 feet high) at a little-known break called "Outer Sprecks" (also called "Egypt") on the north shore of Maui in December of 2007. (3) Only a couple weeks later, on 1-05-2008 a few surfers challenged giant waves at Cortes Bank, 100-miles off the coast of San Diego, CA. Mike Parsons is credited with a 77-foot wave, verified by photograph. See the photo (which is also my avatar): https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&id=0249728B53231A3CE73FBED30319FCDA83F21D65&thid=OIP.nr-9O4GOeGLslu82KHZsYgHaDp&mediaurl=http%3A%2F%2Fgraphics8.nytimes.com%2Fimages%2F2008%2F01%2F09%2Fsports%2F09surf.1.600.jpg&exph=296&expw=600&q=surfers+defy+giant+waves+awakened+by+storm&selectedindex=0&ajaxhist=0&vt=0&eim=1,2,6 According to witnesses, Greg Long was seen on a wave near 90 feet tall that same day but it was not photographed. Lastly, (4) Rodrigo Koxa, is credited with an 80-foot wave at Nazare Portugal on 11-08-2017. Sorry the video is so blurry, that's the best view available. See my painting reconstruction of his famous wave. https://fineartamerica.com/featured/nazare-portugal-11-08-2017-john-kaelin.html https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=rodrigo+koxa+nazare+80+foot+youtube&view=detail&mid=D41B67AF5A72B9621951D41B67AF5A72B9621951&FORM=VIRE See the collection of my paintings of the biggest waves ever surfed at "biggestwaveseversurfed.com." https://john-kaelin.pixels.com/

"The Mueller investigation found no evidence that President Trump or any of his aides coordinated with the Russian government’s 2016 election interference, according to a summary of the special counsel’s key findings made public on Sunday by Attorney General William P. Barr." https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/mueller-finds-no-trump-russia-conspiracy-but-stops-short-of-exonerating-president-on-obstruction/ar-BBVaNbB?ocid=spartandhp What this means is the amount of in-the-open "collusion" does not amount to EVIDENCE for criminal conspiracy, beyond a reasonable doubt. That means that Trump, and those around him, were aware enough that cooperating with Russians was a no-no, so they were extra careful to not leave evidence behind. They were smooth criminals, clever grifters. They got away with it....so far until the several other investigations reach conclusions. "...Mr. Mueller’s report states that “while this report does not conclude that the president committed a crime, it also does NOT exonerate him” on the obstruction of justice issue." Then, on cue, Trump announced that he is "completely and totally exonerated."

Why is there something rather than nothing?

It's just hard to imagine how, when, or where, absolutely nothing ever existed. If a big bang came out of it, then that potential for a big bang is not nothing. -

It shocked me, but not surprising, to see Trump claim, in the recent interview by Maria Bartiromo, the first thing that pops into his diminished mind why he hated John McCain so much, calling him "horrible," is that McCain voted NO on repeal and replace Obamacare, and Trump LIED substantially that McCain's vote took health care away from people. Bartiromo did not call it out, so she is complicit. The GOP replacements to Obamacare (25% approval) were half as popular as Obamacare (50% approval), if I recall correctly, and would in fact take health care away from millions of people. This is another of a million examples of psychological projection by Trump. He accuses everyone else of doing, or being, what he does, or how he is. Very clever tactic to hold his simple-minded base, who either don't notice, don't believe, or don't care. https://www.mediaite.com/tv/watch-trump-fumes-and-calls-foxs-maria-bartiromo-fake-news-for-grilling-him-on-mccain-attacks/ "...All three senators had their reasons, and they had each hinted for weeks that they would be reluctant to back the Senate’s various Obamacare repeal proposals. By the wee hours of Friday morning, three different Senate plans — a robust repeal-and-replace bill, a cleaner repeal bill, and finally so-called skinny repeal — had failed over three days of debate. "Collins and Murkowski voted down all three. They had said for two months that they wouldn’t support a plan that resulted in millions fewer Americans having health coverage. The three health care bills that Republicans tried to pass would have led to between 16 million and 32 million fewer Americans having health insurance, when compared to Obamacare. "McCain, though, was the surprise. Diagnosed with brain cancer and the subject of much speculation after a rousing Senate speech calling for a return to an open and bipartisan process in the Senate, the Arizona Republican joined the other Republican dissenters at the climax of the Senate health care fight — and helped kill the bill." https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/7/28/16054700/senate-obamacare-repeal-john-mccain-susan-collins-lisa-murkowski

"When Bill O'Reilly told Trump that Putin was 'a killer' because of the number of journalists and dissidents murdered in Russia, Trump replied, "There are a lot of killers....We have a lot of killers." 'Well, you think our country is so innocent?" https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4192606/Trump-respects-Putin-says-lot-killers.html Because of his extreme level of narcissism, Trump lacks any empathy. He is a privileged, spoiled boy, who rages uncontrollably about his enemies and holds a grudge. He MAY have utilized his friendship with Putin to have a Russian hitman remove someone for him. "We have a lot of killers." That can just as well mean "Putin and I (we) have access to a lot of killers." When Trump and Putin emerged from their secret meeting in Helsinki, Putin worked hard at controlling the grin on his face, with delight. Putin was nearly humming "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah, Zip-A-Dee- A." Trump had a grim look, like he just got a scolding from his boss. Then Trump forced a fake-looking smile. Then he said Putin was "strong and powerful" (which mean the same thing) in his denial of interfering in the US election.

Why is there something rather than nothing?
Airbrush replied to Vexen's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
Air is not nothing. You can't see it, but it is a gas. Space is not nothing. Just because you cannot see, detect, or define empty space, doesn't mean it is nothing. The something we can see, came out of something we cannot see. -
If you watch the video he looks like the average crazed dictator, or mob boss, boasting to their crowd. "I have the most loyal voters....where I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot someone and I wouldn't lose any voters....OK?! It's like incredible." https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=trump+said+he+could+shoot+someone+on+fifth+avenue&qpvt=trump+said+he+could+shoot+someone+on+fifth+avenue&view=detail&mid=0DDCAFAFE6A3320A40600DDCAFAFE6A3320A4060&&FORM=VRDGAR He would not lose votes from his base. His supporters will just brush it aside with disbelief or rationalize it. "That is just Trump being Trump. He's funny... He's just exaggerating.....big deal....we want a street fighter....someone who acts tough." More recently he insinuated that if the Dems go too far investigating him, it would be bad because the police, military, and bikers will fight for him. Insinuating civil war. "I can tell you I have the support of the police, the support of the military, the support of the Bikers for Trump – I have the tough people, but they don't play it tough [YET] — until they [Democrats] go to a certain point [investigate too much], and then it would be very bad, very bad." https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6811279/Trump-issues-ominous-warning-support-police-military-bikers.html His response to the NZ shooter when asked if he thinks there is a rise in white nationalism worldwide: "I don't really. I think it's a small group of people that have very, very serious problems, I guess," the president replied. "If you look what happened in New Zealand, perhaps that's the case. I don't know enough about it yet … But it's certainly a terrible thing." What he means is it is ONLY a small group of people with serious problems. No big deal. It's JUST that their "problem" is Muslims, as well as other groups of people that are not white nationalists. They are not "animals" as he calls the despicable immigrant invaders, they are JUST a few people with PROBLEMS, no big deal. They are not terrorists. It is a "terrible THING" that white nationalists are forced to take action against the invaders, who are bringing drugs and crime over the border fence, so he needs a taller wall to stop them. Therefore the national emergency declaration.

A moon coverall to simulate Earth gravity on the Moon
Airbrush replied to harlock's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
If you are trying to "simulate earth gravity on the moon," the way to do it is with a giant centrifuge for sleeping quarters underground. The quarters would be angled inward towards a central hub, like a merri-go-round at the park. -
"How the Universe Works" on the Science channel. In the last episode about finding Earth 2.0, some think that red dwarf stars are not promising for advanced civilizations. We should look for stars about the size of our Sun and a planet about the size of Earth, not very common. They really have not found a planet as nice as Earth, yet.

At what age did you move out of your mother's house?
Airbrush replied to Vexen's topic in The Lounge
It depends on how many siblings you have. My eldest brother moved away to live on college campus. My second eldest brother joined the Navy. There was space for me in the basement until age 27, when I found a job with 1.5 hours commute by bus each way. I moved because I found a room closer to my job. It was in a big house with members of a Hindu cult called Ananda Marga, which was an adventure. There was a resident yogi. After a few months I married one of the cult members so she could get a green card, and we are still together 37 years later. -
Fox News started out as the anti-Obama channel. They had 8 years of practice defaming Obama, especially with Birtherism. Whenever I watched Fox News during Obama's term, the main story was how Obama was the source of all evil in this world.

Sunrise to sunset lapse... on the moon.
Airbrush replied to Externet's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
Here's an easy way to remember. The Moon is tidally locked with Earth. The Moon orbits the Earth once per month. So one Moon day is about as long as one Earth month. So sunrise to sunset on the Moon is about half that (15 Earth days). 360hours / 24hours = 15 days. You were correct! https://www.universetoday.com/20524/how-long-is-a-day-on-the-moon-1/ -
Did anyone watch this? I saw most of it. It was on channels: 2, 4, 5, 7, 11, and several cable news channels. One thing that did not get enough notice is that Trump called Cohen a "RAT." The way Trump used the term is a common gangster reference to someone who tells the TRUTH to law enforcement. At rat is not a liar. The GOP questioning Cohen kept harping on the theme that Cohen is a liar and cannot be trusted. Here is Trump's famous Tweet: "Remember, Michael Cohen only became a “Rat” after the FBI did something which was absolutely unthinkable & unheard of until the Witch Hunt was illegally started. They BROKE INTO AN ATTORNEY’S OFFICE! Why didn’t they break into the DNC to get the Server, or Crooked’s office?" The FBI did NOT BREAK into Cohen's office. They had a warrant and Cohen later clarified that the FBI were professional and courteous. So Trump admits that Cohen was telling the TRUTH to law enforcement, the opposite of what the GOP were arguing.

This is the myth of privilege. The rich are always people who worked hard and are talented, so they deserve their riches, and we should be respectful to them for their hard work and talent. However, it may be that not all rich are hard workers with talent. Also, for every rich person in the top tenth of a percent, there could be a hundred others who are just as hard working and just as talented, but they were not in the right place at the right time, so they are restricted to a middle class life. There is room for only a small number at the top (by definition).

Hypervelocity Supermassive Black Hole
Airbrush replied to Airbrush's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
“We estimate that it took the equivalent energy of 100 million supernovae exploding simultaneously to jettison the black hole,” study co-author Stefano Bianchi, from Roma Tre University in Italy, said in a statement." https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/gravitational-waves-send-supermassive-black-hole-flying/ Is 100 million supernovae exploding at once equivalent to converting one million solar masses to energy? My guess would be that only a fraction of the energy was a directional impulse. Much energy escaped in all directions, right? How much of that energy was consumed by the black hole? According to the paper provided by Mordred, the new quasar has the mass of about 3 billion solar masses. -
Hypervelocity Supermassive Black Hole
Airbrush replied to Airbrush's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
So there would be no fire ball? When one million solar masses are converted into energy of momentum and gravitational radiation, would the new black hole gobble up much of the energy released, except for a directional impulse from gravity waves? So the gravity waves act like a rocket pushing from one side the huge mass to 4 million mph? How much speed would the momentum contribute? Would the momentum come from spin? Suppose 2 tops are spinning on the floor, when they contact they violently bounce off each other.
