Correct me if I am wrong, but I seem to remember cable news points made about N.Korea's intentions. In the news someone said that the US pulled troops away from the border in the past (1990s?) and immediately satellites detected N.Korea moving all its' military forces close to the border, looking like they wanted to attack. That was when the US moved troops back to the border. Anyone know about that? N.Korea wants to unite both north and south Korea under the rule of Kim.

If you were forced to bet on one or the other, infinite universe within an infinite multiverse, or finite universe within an infinite multiverse, what would you bet on?
-
The concept "near infinite" is meaningless because the difference between infinite and very, very big is INFINITE. These 2 concepts have an infinite difference. If this universe is infinite, then where does the adjacent universe begin? If you need to go to infinity seeking the edge of our universe, where does the next one begin?
-
I'm still baffled, because on the scale of the universe, I don't see how you can stuff more than one infinite-sized universe into a multiverse. An infinite number of rational fractions between 1 and 2 is interesting but not a realistic model for universes within multiverses. The scale must remain constant. You cannot have tiny-sized universes (between numbers 1 and 2) that are also infinite in size.

"My administration is restoring the sacred bonds of loyalty between this nation and its citizens, but our citizens must also restore the bonds of trust and loyalty between one another. We must love each other, respect each other, and cherish our history and our future together. So important. We have to respect each other. Ideally, we have to love each other." What Trump is saying, above, is Trump's administration is working on getting loyalty from the citizens. But also the racists and the anti-racists should trust and be loyal to each other. Anti-racists should also stop beating up on racists. Also I think it implies that KKK should respect and be loyal to Neo-Nazis, and each Supremacist group should be loyal to each and every other White Supremacists group. Then he supports keeping the statue of Robert E. Lee with the "cherish our history" which is absurd in the context of the torchlight march the night before and riot and killing in VA, over the statue. Trump's initial remark after a woman was killed by a car driven by a racist, was that the violence must stop "on MANY sides...on MANY sides". He carefully crafted his statement to end with one of his trademark, repetitious, punch lines, with emphasis on the words "on MANY sides". Then today he finally made a specific statement, because he was forced into it, BUT ONLY AFTER boasting about the economy, stock market, and job growth, then he ended with specific denunciation of racists groups as "repugnant". Does that mean they are a "basket of deplorables"?

How can a universe that has infinite size be contained within an infinite sized multiverse?
-
What makes you think the universe is infinite in extent when you previously said the universe could be "part of a much larger multiverse", which means our universe is finite, the multiverse is infinite, and we could be only one of many, maybe one of an infinite number of other big bangs?
-
Trumps says he condemns the recent violence "on many sides" (which he repeated to emphasize there were MANY sides) in VA, when hate groups including, KKK, Neo-Nazi, white supremecist groups, and others united to protest the removal of Robert E. Lee's statue. This is an example of his racism and senile dementia. There were not "many" sides. There were hate groups UNITED against the removal of the statue, and a group opposed to them. That makes only 2 sides, the racists, and the anti-racists. Trump makes a false equivalence to say the violence was from "many sides". http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-condemns-violence-on-many-sides-after-charlottesville-white-nationalist-rally-2017-8

Maybe the big show of missiles is a diversion by N.Korea if they were able to smuggle nukes into Seoul, Tokyo, Washington DC, etc, in cars or trucks. They could do business with Al Qaeda or any terrorist organization to deploy nukes in major cities of the world. Then N.Korea can hold the world hostage. Maybe there is no way to take nukes away from a nation after they have them. We just need to get used to N.Korea having nukes. The best leverage over Kim Jong Un is to have Kim's supplier of his favorite foods (China or Russia?) cut it off. Give N.Korea all the rice and beans they need, but Kim and his generals will only have rice and beans also. Then he will realize China means business, and maybe halt the nuclear development.
-
Trump's "fire and fury" reply implies that he is willing to do a first nuclear strike on N.Korea, since they have already crossed the red line. One hour after Trump said N.Korea "best not make any more threats", N.Korea threatened to attack Guam. Also N.Korea is assumed to be able to destroy many US cities. That is also intolerable to Trump. Therefore Trump feels justified in a first strike, to avoid a longer, more extensive war later. The only question is when?

What are Kim Jong Un's favorite foods? With his big belly there must be a good number of delicacies imported into N.Korea. If the world can persuade China, Russia, or whatever country is supplying Un's favorite foods, and CUT THEM OFF, the great leader, and his pampered officers, will have a big problem. That is a VERY big problem, not a minor problem like most of his poor people starving to death.

40TH Anniversary: NASAs Longest and Farthest.
Airbrush replied to beecee's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
When thinking about the plaques attached to the Pioneers, as well as the Voyagers, do you now think it was a good idea to let ANY ET out there know where we are? Like it's saying "This is where we live, please come and take our ideal planet away from us." -
Why don't they sanction luxury goods imported into N.Korea? The great leader and other top officers need their booze, porn, drugs, and other luxury items. When luxuries are cut off, then the great leader will reconsider, not from sanctioning their exports. From link above. "...The export of coal, ore and other raw materials to China is one of North Korea's few sources of cash. Estimates say that North Korea exports about $3bn worth of goods each year - and the sanctions could eliminate $1bn of that trade." Big deal, that $1 Billion reduction in cash will mostly hurt the poor N.Koreans. The great leader and his officers always get their cut off the top.

I believe the US has a missile or radar/artillery system that can instantly track incoming artillery (or maybe missiles?) calculate from trajectory to the starting point, so can quickly fire back at the source of the incoming fire and destroy the sender's location before the sender can move to safety. If several thousand cruise missiles were launched by the US, and they were all timed to hit all the artillery and missile batteries within range of Seoul simultaneously, would there be enough cruise missiles to take out all targets? How many targets are there?

The question is was our big bang everything? Or are there adjacent big bangs that are far beyond our visual horizon? OUR universe is probably finite in size simply because it is "easier" for a finite big bang to happen than an infinite one. Infinity is a very special animal. If the creation of the universe is comparable to pulling a rabbit out of a hat, an infinite universe is like pulling a unicorn out of that hat. Which is more likely? Of course I could be wrong, but this is something nobody can prove or disprove, until an adjacent big bang impacts the visual horizon of our big bang.

Big Bang not an instance of something from nothing?
Airbrush replied to Alfred001's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
Yes personal incredulity to be exact. In all the cosmology documentaries I've seen on Science Channel, never once did anyone mention a finite size growing to an infinite size in a finite amount of time. Even if the universe grew a Trillion times every second, since the big bang, if it was finite at the start it would still be finite. Infinity is a different animal. Can anyone explain how the "tan function" is a model for a finite universe growing to an infinite size in a finite amount of time? I forgot all my trig from high school. -
How about the idea of EMPs set off all along the border to render the North's artillery and missile batteries useless? But that won't take out their secret "car-nukes" hidden in Seoul. What would be the appropriate response by South Korea, Japan, and the US, if the North initiated a significant attack on Seoul that killed thousands of people and a Billion dollars in damage?

Then try your best to explain how a finite size can grow to an infinite size. I am eager to learn. As for what exactly is "nothing", is it simply the absence of all matter or energy? -

The idea of something finite in size growing to an infinite size is hard to imagine. That means an infinite growth rate. I doubt it until I hear an argument in favor of it. -
Move to Titan, the moon of Saturn. With low gravity and dense atmosphere you could easily run and glide with wings or powered jet pack.

Is there a way for the US to detect all N.Korean artillery and missile batteries along the border? All those aimed at Seoul and other targets within reach? Could the US assign one cruise missile for each battery? In the event that N.Korea unleashes total attack on Seoul, all their artillery and missiles within range could be destroyed within minutes. Maybe the people of Seoul should practice evacuating the city, so in the event N.Korea unleashes an attack, all the people and most of the pets are removed to safety. There would be terrible physical damage to Seoul, but the retaliation against N.Korea for the attack would totally annihilate the N.Korea government permanently. How would China feel about that?

Big Bang not an instance of something from nothing?
Airbrush replied to Alfred001's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
"... the universe is the ultimate free lunch! It came from nothing, and its total energy is zero, but it nevertheless has incredible structure and complexity. There could even be many other such universes, spatially distinct from ours." Excellent article and not too difficult for me. What about the incredible structure and complexity of the universe? That is not nothing. The universe did not come from nothing, it came from zero energy, some kind of potential condition from which a universe can appear. -

Are there any theories in cosmology about "nothing"? What exactly is nothing? -

Nothing never existed, nor will it ever exist, and that is infinitely old. -
Other ideas to stop global warming: - figure out how to desalinate water on a massive scale. Then use the water to irrigate deserts to grow forests. - figure out how to get a volcano, of the right size and characteristics, to erupt enough to cool the climate, but not too much
