There was an excellent interview of Neil Tyson by Fareed Zakaria on CNN recently. Anyone see it? He suggested a reason ETs may have not made contact with us is because humans are not intelligent enough for ETs to WANT to communicate with us. This would explain the Fermi Paradox. We don't interview the Queen of a termite mound. If they are so much more advanced than we are, then they should be able to covertly figure us out. They could tap into TV and learn all the languages on Earth. What they would learn about humans is how politically divided we are. To make contact with some humans may cause problems with other humans. They are politically savvy enough to NOT open a "can of humans". This makes sense to me. It doesn't make any sense at all that UFOs would have lights on the OUTSIDE of their spacecraft, as if to call attention to them. Even humans know about stealth. If ETs are here, or have been here for a long time, they certainly are avoiding direct contact with most people, and they must have better stealth than we do. All I can think of is that they are so far beyond us, that they know we will never be able to verify their existence. They are good at picking up after themselves, unlike us humans. They know they are occasionally seen by people, but they know people well enough to know most people will not believe them. This may be sent to Speculations, but how can you talk about ETs on Earth without speculating?

Ferguson conflict - What is the problem, and how to solve it?
Airbrush replied to CaptainPanic's topic in Politics
Arms are much harder to hit, but a person's thighs are a larger, more stationary target. They should shoot at his legs to incapacitate and not kill. Officer Wilson was close enough to EASILY hit Michael in the legs. -
Ferguson conflict - What is the problem, and how to solve it?
Airbrush replied to CaptainPanic's topic in Politics
The problem is a general bad relationship between the Ferguson police and the black community. This is not about Michael Brown, he is only the straw that broke the camel's back. Peaceful demonstrators should unite and agree to stop demonstrating at sunset, or an agreed-upon time, so only the few troublemakers are left behind to be arrested. The solution is to improve the general relationship between the Ferguson police and the black community. The Ferguson police have a lot of work to do, so they should get busy improving the relationship. -
Here is my question for experts of Islam. It appears to me that IS (the Islamic State, formerly ISIS or ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Levant means Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Lebannon, Cyprus, and Southern Turkey))) IS the ONE TRUE Islam since it most closely follows the literal Quran. Sunis, Shia, and other Islamic sects, follow a "watered-down" interpretation of the Quran, a peaceful version, and don't follow the encouragement to fight jihad against unbelievers, and unbelievers are ANYONE, including Muslims who don't follow the extreme, literal, Sharia-Law version of Islam. This reminds me of the Roman Catholic Church being the ONE TRUE Christianity, and the Protestants are reformers who "fell away from the Church", who don't follow the ONE TRUE message of Jesus Christ. And within that message is to join the one true religion, the Catholic Church, or so I was led to believe in Catholic grammar school and high school, before I "fell away from the Church" and became agnostic. If 99% of Muslims are against these radicals, then the one true jihad for ALL Muslims is to fight against IS. Good, true Muslims should now begin a jihad against IS. They should infiltrate IS and give their locations to the US advisors so drone strikes can take them out, systematically. In fact, it appears to me, that to NOT fight jihad against IS would be an evil for ALL Muslims. It is not enough to just verbally denounce IS. True believers should follow Mohammed's example and infiltrate IS to destroy it from within! Now get to work believers!

Suppose the USA detects an asteroid, not too far away, that has so much of a precious metal, that after netting out the costs of getting to it, attaching rockets, sending that asteroid to an Earth orbit, and finally chip off pieces to send to Earth, your net profit was 18 Trillion dollars. Could that pay off the USA national debt, or will the value of the precious metal become so diluted by the glut supply, that it would have a much smaller value?

Good observation. The frequency of "shooting stars" seen from the surface of Mars would be the same as seen on Earth, only seen closer, the blaze would occur closer to the viewer.
-
Certainly, because they would not burn up in the low-density atmosphere. The question is about "shooting stars" or meteors that burn up in the atmosphere, not hits on Mars. Shooting stars would be seen much fewer than on Earth because the ones we see are mostly the size of sand grains. That sized meteor may not burn at all upon impacting the atmosphere of Mars. Or it would not start to burn until nearly impacting the surface. So shooting stars would be fewer and shorter in duration on Mars. It would take something larger, maybe the size of a baseball (anyone know?), to create the shooting star effect we see in our night skys.

It is all about the blockaide. Attention should be focused on the blockaide and making it more reasonable. Palestinians feel it is unreasonable, and glad the rockets are fired into Israel because of that. What is so hard about a FAIR blockaide against weapons and building materials for tunnels and bunkers?

".....On November 19, the Times-Herald afternoon paper detailed the precise route: From the airport, the President's party will proceed to Mockingbird Lane to Lemmon and then to Turtle Creek, turning south to Cedar Springs. The motorcade will then pass through downtown on Harwood and then west on Main, turning back to Elm at Houston and then out Stemmons Freeway to the Trade Mart...." So Oswald had a little over 2 days notice, at the most, to come up with a plan, and to carry it out. He may have had less time to prepare if he read the article late on 11-19-63 or the next day. Interesting the documentaries missed this fact. This is astonishing. Until Oswald read the precise route in the Dallas Times-Herald, or heard on the radio, or likely heard from a co-worker at the TSBD, he probably never considered he might have an opportunity to assassinate JFK. He put his plan together with VERY short notice, shockingly short notice. When Oswald met with officials at the USSR and Cuban embassies in Mexico City, he may have revealed his intentions to assassinate JFK. But maybe not, since he never dreamed that he would have an opportunity until the route was announced on 11-19-1963. The JFK assassination is a story as strange as fiction. It almost appears that "the powers that be" wanted JFK to get assassinated, and have Oswald shot 48 hours later. It is too complex a series of unlikely coincidences, and yet it is.

Then build turbines that are on the bottom of small rivers so that as long as there is any water flowing, the turbines will spin. When the channel dries up, it goes inactive until the rains return. There can be turbines generating electricity anywhere inside a city's sewer system, or anywhere water flows after a rain.

Thanks for that info, Swansont. That is exactly what I wanted to know! There were probably a number of people like Oswald, living in Dallas, that would have been glad for the opportunity to take a shot at Kennedy. Among them, Oswald was the lucky guy. There were probably a number of people like Jack Ruby, living in the area, that would have been glad for the opportunity to take a shot at Oswald. Again, another delusional individual, was the lucky guy. "...When Oswald was hired, it was known that President Kennedy would be visiting Texas sometime in November, but no trip itinerary had been planned. The announcement that Kennedy's motorcade would even pass through Dealey Plaza on November 22 wasn't made public until November 21 - five weeks after Oswald was hired to work at the Depository. - See more at: http://westwingreports.com/jfk-elm-street/oct-15-oswald-is-hired-by-the-texas-school-book-depository#sthash.emUEKOvu.dpuf..." It looks like a mistake above on the date the path of the Kennedy motorcade was announced. If it was announced to the public on 11-21-63 and JFK was shot the next day, how could Oswald have time to prepare? He must have known the route earlier than the day before he took his shots.

This is an interesting question. The only hydroelectric power generation seems to take place in huge megastructures, dams. Why not distribute the generators along rivers for miles, along one side so as not to interfere with the river flow?

If the only way to neutralizing rocket launch sites is to explode the rockets, and there may be many rockets in once place located in hospitals and schools, then there is no way to avoid a huge explosion which will level the whole area. Is there a way to make rockets inoperable, without blowing them up? How about a focused electro magnetic pulse to cripple the electronics so the rockets cannot be launched?

Recently there aired on History Channel a few new documentaries, including “Lee H. Oswald – 48 Hours to Live”. It was very interesting to hear the few things Oswald said, and see a re-enactment of what he did after shooting JFK. Little is known of him except his living in Russia and his contacting the Soviet, and Cuban, embassies in Mexico City shortly before the assassination. Did he tell them what he was planning? Did they encourage him and promise to help him escape? If Oswald was not killed by Jack Ruby, would it have come out that Russia and/or Cuba was behind the assassination? History is often a record of delusional actions by actors. Hitler’s strategic blunders are some good examples. Oswald, when questioned about killing the president in the police car after he was picked up in the theater, said something like, “What’s the big deal about the president getting killed? There will be a new one in a few days.” Oswald consistently denied anything, including shooting Officer Tibbet. Another delusional action, Jack Ruby believed he would be congratulated for shooting Oswald, and let go! Here is my question. Does anyone know WHEN did Oswald get his job at the school book depository? Was he looking for a job along the published presidential route? Did Russian KGB help Oswald find a job along the parade route? Or was it by chance that he was working there. Does anyone now still believe the assassination was a conspiracy?

Whatever happened to high tech, surgical strikes? If the IDF can image combatants with infra red, they should be able to use a 20mm or 30mm round to take out individuals, from a drone. Israel is using artillary to take out targets, and artillary is not a surgical strike. The Israeli argument: "They are firing unguided rockets into our country and our ONLY way to stop it is to fire artillary at the general launch locations, and take out the WHOLE area, or blast a trail going there in tanks." Why does Israel need to destroy the tunnels? Maybe the tunnels can be monitored, flooded, or even booby trapped. At least install bugs and other detection devices concealed everywhere so the tunnels could not be used without the IDF knowing, then ambush the tunnellers when they attack.
-
Since the density of atmosphere on Mars is about one percent as dense as Earth's, then I would expect that on Mars you would only see about 1% as many shooting stars as you would on Earth. Am I wrong?

Does anyone know why Israel was not carved out of Southern Germany rather than Palestine, since the Nazis were set on exterminating all Jews in Europe? Is it because the Old Testament kept referring to Palestine as the "Promised Land" and the "Land Flowing With Milk & Honey"?
-
I agree with you that Israel is not doing enough to appease the Palestinians in Gaza. There is a heavy-handed blockaide of many things needed in Gaza for their economy. This is what the Palestinians are thinking about. But construction material is used to build tunnels and rockets are smuggled in through the Egyptian tunnels. A "false dichotomy"? How about the fact Hamas wants destruction in Israel, anywhere and ANYONE in Israel, the more the better, indiscriminately, and Israel is only targeting attackers? Why can't the IDF get better intelligence from US spy satellites using infrared to exactly pinpoint the attackers? Then why not fire a kinnetic round that has a small kill radius? Or are the bad guys so closely surrounded by civilians?
-
So now it is a crime to suppress an attacker? The proportionality is established by Hamas by the circumstances. They know very well the best Israel can do is suppress rocket fire, and the only way to do that causes an unproportional number of civilian deaths in Palestine. If Israel knew a better way, they would. They warn the people in the area what is coming, and Hamas tells the people to stay put and die for them. You make it sound like Israel WANTS to kill as many civilians as possible. That is ludicrous! Should Israel make the battle more even by entering Gaza without tanks, for a FAIR fight? Israel are the "adults" here? So Israel should just allow the rockets to fall anywhere inside Israel without responding. Hamas set up this situation and Israel is responding the only way they know how, and Hamas knows this, to minimize casualties to their own soldiers. Any other country will do that.
-
Hamas is to blame. Hamas launch rockets into Israel from civilian locations, which acts as human shields, then Israel is forced to attack the launching locations. Hamas says it wants to destroy Israel. Israel never said it wants to destroy Palestine. Hamas has built 30 tunnels into Israel that cost about a million dollar each. That means Hamas has spent $30,000,000 on tunnels to attack Israel. Or do you suggest the tunnels are for smuggling food and medical supplies into Gaza? Hamas is responsible because it forces Israel to attack civilian areas by launching rockets FROM those areas. The conflict is as simple as that.

I believe they should be mandatory to teach life skills in school
Airbrush replied to Marshalscienceguy's topic in Politics
You deserve a +1 for that! YEEES, teach life skills. They are far more important than memorizing a LOT of stuff. Other stuff is important too, but set aside at least a half hour a day for all life skills necessary for survival. -
If such is true, then suburbian streets must act as conduits for smells. Streets have a wide smooth surface bordered by houses, trees and bushes. These act to channel smells down the streets, but only in one of two directions, parallel with the street. When my dog arrives at a street corner, he stops and sniffs the air and takes a couple of minutes to decide which direction to go, which I usually allow him, unless there is a hazard. He likes to go different directions, so as to not miss the smells from other dogs. After about 20 minutes of investigating our neighborhood, he is satisfied, and we head for home. He also has "frienemies". These are dogs that he likes to stop and bark at for a few seconds. It sounds to me like the two dogs exchange a few angry barks and it resembles humans cussing and swearing at each other. I do believe dogs love the casarsis of angry barks at another dog. My dog loves to express rage, tempararily. I wonder if humans don't sometimes love conflict and cursing and swearing, just for fun. Maybe humans even love things related to war, and that could be why warfare is not likely to disappear.
-
Is it true that dogs, or perhaps certain kinds of dogs, have such sensitive sense of smell, that they can find their way home, over many miles distance, by sniffing for the wind from their neighborhood? The theory is that every area has a peculiar mix of smells that dogs can distinguish. When the wind carries the mix of smells from their neighborhood towards them, they head into the wind as long as they can smell that and when the wind shifts, they have to go around in circles sniffing for that wind again, so they can head into that direction.

"....Bottom line? With radio technology slightly more advanced than our own, Homo sapiens is detectable out to a distance of roughly 50 light-years. Within that distance are about 5,000 stars, all of which have had the enviable pleasure of receiving terrestrial television. And each day, a fresh stellar system is exposed to signals from Earth. "But even if you believe in highly optimistic estimates regarding the prevalence of cosmic intelligence, its unlikely that another civilization exists within 50 light-years. Thats too small a distance. Were no doubt listed in some alien grad students data tables as a world with life, but without the footnote indicating intelligent life. We are the new kids on the block, and so far its a safe bet that none of the other kids know were here." Then why is SETI even bothering to look? Could there be a way for ETs to detect our technology from techno-waste gasses in our atmosphere? My pet peeve about astonomers is when they say that there can be so many Earth-like planets in our galaxy and other galaxies. Who cares about life in other galaxies? Who cares about life beyond a thousand light years? That seems irrelevant for a long time. All that really matters is how many Earth-like plants there are within about a hundred light years.

Non spherical Supernova Explosion?
Airbrush replied to Nicholas Kang's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
Asymmetric supernovas may produce hypervelocity neutron stars traveling over 900 miles per second. "...Neutron stars are the remnants of supernova explosions, and their extreme speeds are very likely the result of an asymmetric supernova explosion or the loss of their near partner during the supernova explosions that forms them. The neutron star RX J0822-4300, which was measured to move at a record speed of over 1500 km/s (0.5% c) in 2007 by the Chandra X-ray Observatory, is thought to have been produced the first way.[15]" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stellar_kinematics
