interaction with the higgs particle is not what creates mass. this is a very common view misconceived i think by the media. the higgs particle proves the existence of the higgs field. it is a disturbance of this field. as far as your question as to why it is a certain speed, i would say that it is the speed of movement. for instance, when we boil things down to the bottom of our measurement ability we realize that particles are essentially results of measurement and of a many body system (the interaction of waves gives the effect of the things we see). i now compare the vacuum of space to water. even an ultrasonic sound travels at the speed of sound in water. in my perspective, velocity itself resides upon the backdrop and is dependent upon interaction itself which in it's simplest form is c. without any further tail chasing i am simply saying that c is a constant. i sincerely hope that made sense. if not fire away.

you make a good argument. given that only humans will seek out such occupations it is only logical to consider them human beings. we must not forget this. while i disagree that humans are likely to react to a threat with aggression (it is not the only solution), it happens quite often and is only profitable for one party. i believe that officers are trained to maintain dominance in a situation to reduce the possibility of conflict. in other words, if you assert a dominating persona you are likely a threat, then the officer must maintenance the situation as quickly as possible to prevent losing control of the situation or allowing a situation to develop. i still hate the idea of relinquishing my dominance which is key for my survival. i think that many conflicts with the police can be resolved by seminars or training classes for officers having a certain amount of time in. this would be a refresher on conflict resolution.

i have always found that police i run into take a liking to me. i must be emanating some kind of threatening signal. "are you looking at me, cause i'm looking at you, cause your looking at me..." this is my best explanation.

yes there are various possibilities available. i had actually considered an atmosphere during the early stages of formation and development. i decided to opt out due to the temp measurements of pluto and then decided to look more at metallic hydrogen. i definitely agree with the elements argon, co2, methane, hydrogen, helium, and nitrogen. i like the idea of no atmosphere for another reason. it takes less fuel to get into orbit. at five times the earth's mass we could get stuck on a planet that gives a short and laborious life. that is a much greater escape velocity even without an atmosphere. we may get to the surface and not have the umph to get back into orbit. of course the size is a wild estimate. i do like your idea of another sister planet out there with an atmosphere.

don't get discouraged if there are flaws in the topic. they will be found. black holes can be daunting abysmal holes in which everyone loves to prey. in the end not much is known about them except that they can suck.

i would say that the press, in america at least has a sensationalism to it that you have to take into account when approaching it.

speaking of meat, do you have a political stance on crimea? i think this is important because it connects with the issues at hand and what role different government models play.
