Well, I first started getting into science after I received copies of "2001" and "The Origin of Species" as gifts. I know, the former is actually science-fiction, but it did enough to ignite my love for astronomy.

  1. My buddy and I were in the car on our way to Best Buy when he had an interesting question. When you throw something up in the air in a moving object (in this case, a conversion van) it goes up into the air and lands relatively close to where you threw it up into the air. Why is this? Shouldn't the motion from the car moving force the ball backwards? Please explain as best you can. Thank you.

    Two Questions

A couple things just popped into my head earlier today. Can anyone help me out here? 1. I was arguing with my friend a couple weeks ago on the morals of veganism, and he was seriously not listening to any reason, and when he asked why I ate fish when I was a vegan I said they didn't feel pain...he said that was just a myth, and I honestly couldn't find a reputable source that said otherwise. So, can fish feel pain? 2. I know that Lamarck's theory of passing on acquired traits and use/disuse has since been disproven in many cases, but isn't there a chance that it's at least slightly true? If umpteen generations of organisms used their bodies in a different, similar way; couldn't they alter their parts? Wouldn't the chicken's loss of the ability of flight be an example of this? Sorry if I'm way off here...just a daydream sort of thing. Thanks in advance for your answers.
  3. See pg. 32 of March's issue of Scientific American.
  4. On the topic of computer cooling...I run my computer for weeks at a time without turning it off, would my computer then get progressively even hotter the more time it was on, or would it get to a certain temperature and stop?
  5. Interesting, thank you Mokele and Ophiloite. Also thanks for the reccomendation Mokele, I'll check that out sometime.
  6. I've been reading The Origin of Species lately, and I must admit I am finding it very difficult and often have to go back and read a chapter numerous times until I'm satisfied with my comprehension. Anyway, this week in biology class we watched a film on a species of misquito that actually lives its entire lifespan in only 24 hours. I'm sure most of you have heard of it, but at the moment the exact name has slipped my mind. So my question is - would the organism's rate of evolution actually increase, seeing as how a new generation is created daily? I hope one of you can shed some light on this. Thanks!
