Okay, thanks

I'm just wondering if people who go choose a career in science need philosophy.

I would guess Astronomy. Anyone else?

As long as I have a want, I have a reason for living. Satisfaction is death. ~George Bernard Shaw What does George Bernard Shaw, mean by "Satisfaction is death?"

I'm not sure if I post it here, but her I go. I know there are about 60-80 billion neurons in the human brain, capable of making a trillion connections. But what I would like to know is how many connections are made during a human life time. How many connections are left unused at the end of my life?

On History channels show The Universe they talked about solar storms "breaking" the magnetic field lines. This has confused me ever since. I thought magnetic field lines were mathematical representations, not a actual physical thing. How can a solar storm break the magnetic field?

Thanks for the link.

I tried doing this equation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton%27s_law_of_universal_gravitation Using the Earth Moon system. So I did it and got this number, 1.961512E247. From these numbers, G= the gravitational constant, M earths mass, M2 Moons mass, and r^2 as the distance between the earth and the moon, which is 348, 403 km. I divided this all and got that humongous number. Is it wrong? Am I doing something wrong? thanks.

The situation isn't as clear cut black-and-white as you seem to make it. I think you should read a bit more what people posted here in the thread; Israel has quite a lot of fault, but the Palestinians - specially Hamas - are far from being innocent lambs. There are terror attacks that kill innocent women and children on the Israeli side too - but other than making an emotional appeal, posting a video showing an incapacitated 5 year old child will prove no point. It's out of context, it's ignoring the background and the other side. I am *all for* finding a solution to the situation. We won't be able to find a solution if we analyze the situation without details, in flat generalized definitions and out of context pieces. Anyone who knows what they are talking about, knows that the Israeli state is a illegal one. The Jewish people had no state, they had no "homeland" but after the holocaust and the rise in antisemitism the British government voted to establish a Jewish state in Palestine. When the Jewish state was established, a war broke out between the Jews and the Palestinians. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1947-1948_Civil_War_in_Mandatory_Palestine Is this not well recorded history?

I did realize that they were rubber bullets. It's irrelevant that they were using rubber bullets or not, the truth is that Israel has caused a great deal of distress with their actions against the terrorists their and they will employ "collective punishment" to deal with problems that they caused. Israel is engaged in illegal activity that needs to be dealt with, this is why the Palestinians are angry and this is why they protest.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/8366433.stm http://www.amnesty.org/en/library/info/MDE15/033/2004 The United nations and Amnesty International appose demolitions in the west bank region. http://www.amnesty.org/en/library/info/MDE15/007/2007 Israel is engaging in collective punishment and this goes against the Geneva convention, which states that "No protected person may be punished for an offence he or she has not personally committed. Collective penalties and likewise all measures of intimidation or of terrorism are prohibited. Pillage is prohibited. Reprisals against protected persons and their property are prohibited." (http://www.icrc.org/ihl.nsf/WebART/380-600038?OpenDocument) The UN actually stated that razing buildings is a theft of Palestine land, which I stated in previous post as being illegal. We must address the root causes to fix the problem. Their is a reason why the Palestines are so angry. It is a occupation, Israel controls the imports and exports, they threat the Palestinians like dare I say, rats. It looks more and more like Israel is the oppressor and the Palestinians the oppressed, but I don't think thats entirely so, I think that Israel acts in the good of it's country, but they can go over the top.

We all know that the entire West Bank region is under heavy occupation,( with IDF soldiers being called Isreali Occupation forces, by the Palatines.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli%E2%80%93Palestinian_conflict All in all, it's America's responsibility to control Isreals actions against the Palastines. It is the United States that gives money to the Isreali government to stay afloat. We have to end the violence and a military occupation is no way to do it, take a page from AVATAR.

I'm taking a poll, http://www.snappoll.com/poll/332977.php (Do you know what fire is?) It will help me in my study. Thanks

So, what about a kind of ERV, infects the mitochondria, then this ERV incision lays dormant until it is passed on to a future generation. Most of the human race is infected, then a few decades later, everyone is dead. Is this even remotely possible?
-
What if mitochondria begins to evolve and can't be used as a factory to produce ATP, if this mutation in the mitochondria spreads, will the human race die out?
-
I hear a a lot of science programs talking about the graviton, but wouldn't the graviton exclude Einsteins theory of general relativity? Thanks.

Does QFT (Quantum Field Theory) apply to magnetic fields?
Peron replied to Peron's topic in Quantum Theory
So, what is a magnetic field then? -
Does QFT (Quantum Field Theory) apply to magnetic fields?
Peron replied to Peron's topic in Quantum Theory
But isn't the photons used to describe what the magnetic field is as well as describe how it attracts? If we call the magnetic field a photon cloud, then we say that Photons are EM wavepackets, then what si the magnetic field that makes the magnetic wave in the Photon? Do you see my confusion here?? -
Does QFT (Quantum Field Theory) apply to magnetic fields?
Peron replied to Peron's topic in Quantum Theory
But aren't the force carriers around the electron photons? Photons are bosons right? My question was, if we are trying to explain electromagnetism, why do we say it's made of photons, when photons themselves are electromagnetic? I'm having a hard time understanding. -
Does QFT (Quantum Field Theory) apply to magnetic fields?
Peron replied to Peron's topic in Quantum Theory
So, we explain magnets with photons, which are themselves electromagnetic wave packets, isn't that kinda of navigating around the problem? -
Does the same explanation for the interaction between charged particles, that QED offers, apply to the magnetic field? Is the magnetic field explained as the overlapping of virtual particles.
-
So, their really is no clear way of knowing what goes on when a electron absorbs a photon?
-
So, have any experiments been performed to show this happens, or is this some kind of postulate?
