Hi, I am just starting to learn chemistry and was wondering what the best way to go about it would be. Is it useful to memorize the whole periodic table with some of the key characteristics of each element? Also, i have alway wondered what chemical equations were. Would someone be able to give a brief explanation about what they are and what they are used for. Also, how do you become good at them. Another thing i've always wondered is, there seems to be millions of different compounds, is it just a matter of having good reference material or is it necessary to learn most of the most common ones. Sorry if my questions are too basic Thanks

Hi, I was hoping people could give me thier opinions on whether science is capable of finding out what conciousness is. I dont have a huge amount of knowledge in science but would like to study it next year at uni and was wondering if searching for conciousness through science was a dead end. Now it is just a matter of choosing which field to get into. My own ponderings have taken me from physics and various theories of quantum conciousness which seems to be way above my head, to molecular biology and the chemistry of mind altering drugs like lsd. It seems none of these fields focus heavily on conciousness. I noticed that Francis Crick moved away from molecular biology to neuro science and predicted that neuroscientists now have adequate tools to study the brain and hopefully find the mind - brain link. In your opinion, which field of science has the potential to figure out conciousness? And what are some of the fields to look into? Hi, I recently listened to a talk by a quite famous buddhist monk who was talking about how science isn't any closer to understanding what conciousness really is. This monk has a Phd in theoretical physics from Cambridge University. He used an example of what i presume was some kind of neuro scientist named John Lorber from the University of Sheffield who was doing research of people that seemed too have no, or very little brain matter. He told of a 19 yr old mathematics major who was very intelligent and yet had no brain. I figured if this was real, there would be tons of writing about it but all i can find on the web is paranormal and pseudo science sites with this research. Have any neuro scientists or anyone else for that matter here heard of this? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi, I was just wondering if it is possible for an atom to die. eg If you had a hydrogen atom isolated somewhere on its own, say a vacuum box or something, would it stay in there with the same state forever or will it disappear? Also, with bigger attoms, will they break down to simpler atoms over time? Sorry if this is to basic but my knowledge of matter is limited Thanks

First, a big thanks to everyone. This thread has really changed the way i think about the universe. There have been alot of great theories mentioned in this post. Well, off to the library to read up on cosmology Anyone know any good non math lay people books on the subject? I have my own view of where the universe is located. Now I know you are all a bunch of hardcore scientists and the mere mention of anything remotely religious makes your skin crawl but I'll throw it out there just for the hell of it. If you turn off your sense of sight where is the universe? If you then turn off your sense of hearing, taste, touch and smell what is left? Only mind. Mind without objects. Except for thought. Now turn thought off. Only pure mind is left. No universe. Nothing to measure. Way back when the universe first started to expand, before the human race and animals ,whether by an expansion of matter in an infinte vacuum or by the very expansion of space itself, what was there to witness it? If there were no obserservers, was it there? Is it not possible this very expansion happened in the mind? And that all that exists is mind made? The buddha said not to belive anything but to find out for yourself. Since I have no direct experience with it i cant believe it. just another spin on things Who knows. Thanks again

I don't know a great deal about physics and am having a hard time distinguishing between chem and physics at times. Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew how cold complete coldness is? Is it measurable? eg its 36 degrees celsius where i'm at at the moment. If I was to zoom straight up beyond the atmosphere, it would be pretty cold but the temperature would still be affected by the sun. If I was then to zoom off out into space well beyond all the stars created by the big bang to a totally isolated spot that is not touched by any light or energy, so you cant see any stars ect, complete black. How cold would it be? Is this known? Thanks for any info

Hi, I am studying cells and was curious to know if all human cells are known. Is there a place with a list of all the differents type of human cells? Also, does each organism have its own types of cells? I mean, is a cows red blood cells the same as ours? And would a pig have a cell that a person doesn't? Or are they all similar? excellent I knew -2^2 was 4 but my ti82 calculator said it was -4 I didn't think it could get something so simple wrong Thanks heaps

hi again when i type [math]6/-2+8/-2^2[/math] into my calculator it gives me -5 by hand i get 6/-2= -3 8/-2^2 = -2 so -3+(-2)= -5 What am I doing wrong?
