The more colloquial term is "theistic evolutionists".

Opinions on Posting in General Forum Doesn't Add To Your Post Count.
Hellbender replied to a topic in The Lounge
Its a good idea. I have been a member of other forums that didn't use vBulletin, so there was no post count, and you really didn't know who the "serious" members were. Post count ranking, and the fact that the only way to get a high rank on a science forum is to talk about science makes perfect sense. -
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy --- OPENS FRIDAY!!!
Hellbender replied to Lance's topic in The Lounge
Thats awesome, Mokele. My on a side note, I too feel so lucky because I feel I have the perfect gf for me too. She loves Aliens movies, science and everything I do, and we have the same sense of humor. Plus shes hot. But she hates most video games because they take my attention away from her.... I used to be so bitter about people that were happy in that aspect of their life, and I can understand why, but now I am so much more happy with her, and I am happy for other people when they find true love. -
I enjoy the Halo series possibly more than I enjoyed Half-Life (which was a lot). I love using the energy sword in mutli (like Demothenese). But I primarily play it for single-player. I also occasionaly play survival horror games such as Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Siren (my favorite). Aside from survival horror and FPS's I like the Baldur's Gate series and the Metroid series as well. Some of my favorite games are Zelda: OFT, Metroid Prime, Siren, Halo 2, GTA Vice City, Mario 2, AVP 2, Half-Life etc., so I play a wide range of games, but my favorite genres are FPS and Survival Horror. As an aside, for Halo fans, do you think it would be a good idea if Bungie re-released Halo:CE a couple of years down the road with all the modifications that Halo 2 made on it? In other words, the ability to hijack vehicles, to operate wraiths, better graphics, upgraded needlers, dual-wielding, etc. all in the original title, without changing the original formula/flavor of the game too much. I thought Halo: CE's single-player campaign was actually superior to Halo 2's and I really enjoyed it, but all of Halo 2's upgrades on the original stuff has spoiled me, so I don't think I could ever play it again. But I would if Bungie went with my idea (more like pipe dream, I know). Oh well just an idea I wanted to share.... Edit: How could I forget Starcraft! Just look at my avatar....

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy --- OPENS FRIDAY!!!
Hellbender replied to Lance's topic in The Lounge
I'm fully prepared to be dogpiled upon when I ask; what is this movie (I know it is based on a book) about? Whats the deal with "towels"? I am a fan of good scifi, so I am naturally interested. -

I was speculating, It certainly could be both of these. -

cool. I used this example in response to simple's question to try and show that it is possible for a heterotroph to evolve from autotrophs, I knew that venus fly traps are not full heterotrophs, just that they display heterotrophic tendencies. -
Oh man, Dak. Quitting smoking is hard, and I did it "cold turkey". You just have to go day by day and not smoke. Nicotine is so damn addictive, that every once and a while you will still crave it, but smoking is just so bad for you. I can't really suggest anything, I got into a mindset where I just didn't smoke, but whatever you can find that helps, by all means use it.

I'm in university now, and I think its ok to be a "nerd" at this point. Many people even look up to you. High-school kids are jerks and I know it may be difficult, but ignore them. You are much better than they are anyway.

you know I never thought about that, Mongolian desert and all. -

Epicathantic folds, yes. In truth, I have also wondered why Mongoloids (Asians) have this feature. You are thinking in terms of only natural/sexual selection, but it very well could have been the result of a genetic bottleneck. I will have to look more into this, though, my bioanthropology class didn't say why, and I never thought to ask. -
What exactly are you getting at here? edit: nevermind

Questions about Darwinism.
Hellbender replied to simple's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
May I add that "Darwinism" simply no longer exists. Darwinism is pretty much evolution, but with natural selection being the only known mechanism. We have since discovered more mechanisms, such as genetic drift and gene flow. "Darwinism" is now updated as "biological evolution". New discovery doesn't overturn a theory; it adds to it. It should behoove an article that critiques it so to know this....... -

Eyes didn't simply pop out of nowhere, and no one proposed that they have. Eyes probably started out as simple light-sensitive clusters of cells, which would be advantageous to the organism in every stage of their development. See the eyes of a planaria. As for autotophic organisms eating one another, it wasn't a conscious effort for the organism, but likely the result of some gradual mutations, ending with the first heterotrophs. There are some carnivorous organisms today that have autotrophic ancestors, like venus fly traps, for example. Why does a story in the bible make you question evolution? Some critique (some, meaing "I don't have all night to correct every lie and misconception in this article") To my knowledge, this is no longer an issue, and hasn't been since Darwin proposed natural selection. There are some random elements to evolution, but we know that it is not totally random. This is simply a lie. Darwin may not have had empirical evidence at the time, but we now have lots of evidence for macroevolution. See here: http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/comdesc/section1.html#pred4 I'd expect an article like this to come from some fundamentalist site, not a Catholic site. As I recall, the previous pope publicly admitted the validity of evolution. Oh well.... -

It would be wiser to suggest a whole social sciences forum, rather than just an anthropology forum.

I agree with you, communism was originally concieved as the perfect government. But I agree with you about the human element. Communism would be fine if people weren't, well, people. If people were perfect, would we really need governments?

evolution of humans and animals
Hellbender replied to qwerty's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
communication is important for social animals. Traits are not always just selected for "attracting mates" or "finding food". Although these are important selecting factors, they are not the only ones. -

african grey parrots are highly social birds, so perhaps the ability to mimic and know what they are saying has a lot to do with communication. Mokele?
