I am a minor league capitalist. I worked as a blue collar worker (machinist) for 45 years and retired 5 years ago. I have investments that I manage myself and have done quite well--for an amerature. I believe in Capitalism. As a Machinist, I spent my life working for Capitalists. If it were not for people like W. K. Kellogg, the Clarke brothers and others, I would not have had a place to ply my craft. Indeed, I never would have learned a craft in the first place. I do not believe however, that Capitalism is the final solution to all of our economic ills. Had it been strictly up to my Capitalist employers, I would not have earned enough money to own my own home, let alone have any investments. What made the difference during my working years was a socialistic organization called a labor union. It was the union that got us the pay and the benefits that made it a good job, rather than a subsistence job. So, I guess what I am trying to say is that Capitalism needs to be moderated somewhat by socialistic organizations, like labor unions, in order that the wealth be distributed in such a way that all parties concerned--workers and owners alike--will benefit. I don't see a hell of a lot of need for the government to get involved in the redistribution of wealth as long as we have the right to collective bargaining.

I wonder if it isn't at least possible that this sea is not completely frozen solid. If it is deep enough, isn't it possible that there could be liquid water at depth? We have places in our oceans where, through geo-thermal activity, the water is really quite hot around these flumes of--what? Lava? Couldn't the same thing be taking place on Mars if these seas were deep enough?

Well, let's see. I start a thread asking about how fast we are moving through the universe, and you divert it to an argument about whether or not centripetal force is properly defined in the dictionary, and engage in a fruitless attempt at trying to make me believe that I said something that I did not---and you have balls enough to say that I am "tolling?" This is tooooooooo much.
-
Well, as I said a few responses ago, I noted at the onset that dictionaries are not always quite in line with scientific terms, so what is the problem? No I didn't say that centripetal force did not exist. I asked if there was a reason that MW didn't have a file on it. Nobody offered a reason. And that is where the strawman argument started. Since you agree that their definition was correct regarding the terms we were discussing, what was the point of trying to divert the discussion to a point that was not germane to the point? Apparently you seem to think so........

Actually the questions that I had about Earth's movement were answered some time ago. There seems now to be only the question of whether some force is imparted to the string, or if it is imparted to the stone and whether or not Merriam Webster can be relied upon to know the difference.
-
It is not relevant because we were discussing the movement of Earth through space and the question about the dictionary sprung from a definition that is accurate.
-
Because it doen not speak to the issue under discussion?

I guess I have never understood this King and Queen business, but then I don't have to understand it, I am an American and Americans are too smart to worship a King or a Queen. We save our worshipping for baseball players and movie stars. Anyway, just out of curiosity, what exactly does the King or Queen of England actually do for England? I thought Tony Blair was the PM, which seems to be a lot like our President, and the Parliment looks and acts a lot like our congress, so outside of showing up for ceremonies, what is their job? Now please, I am not poking fun at the royal family, Hell we had our Kennedys too, I'm just askin' is all.

Now, I suppose if it was a weapons grade laser, that might be different. I saw a demo on TV where they were poking holes through stel plates. I was impressed.

Have you ever read about Helen Keller? She was in that perdicament. http://www.graceproducts.com/keller/life.html

Well I got one of those laser rangefinders for deer hunting and found out that if it is really foggy, or if it is raining hard or snowing hard, it doesn't work very well at all. It will give readings of about 25 to 50 yds regardless of what you are trying to range. Which, I assume, is the point at which the fog/rain/snow causes the laser to reflect back to the unit.

Hey, YT, that would be fine with me....... But old whats-his-name wants to go off on a tangent for some reason.

HUH??? So, if I said that I think that intelligence life exists outside the solar system, I would be stateing it as a fact that I had knowledge thereof?
-
And I still say "as long as that is the law" we will have to live with it. That does not mean that I can't have an opinion of the law and thoughts about how the law came to be. I don't think I indicated that the fact that the law said such and such made it morally right, I think what I said in the "pledge" thread (if indeed that is what you are referring to) was that the issue under discussion would be decided by the SCOTUS and we would have to live with their decision. The same applies in this case, we will have to live with it. We don't have to like it.

Well see, I have a problem with a business being considered "public" absent any public money being invested in it or it being a business that does work for the government. I think that is how the government got away with passing hireing regulations on private businesses by labeling them as "public."
-
Mine is of course, me.
-
And a lot better than mine.
-
Well, is their definition of centripetal force accurate?
-
When you refer to a company as "large" and "public," What exactly do you mean?
