Luck is a relative thing. Considering the amount of live which has gone extinct every living thing is lucky.

Part of the sales pitch on the right has been an ongoing disinformation campiagn. I find it disturbing how un-newsworthy much of what has gone on seems to be.

I know a little: - Hamas is a hardened conservative group financed by Iran, Jordan, Syria and others. There goal is the return of all land (per and post 1948) currently control by Israel and an Islamic State. -The Palestinian Authority is funded by the U.N. and seeks to be a sovereign democratic state autonomous from Israeli control (two state solution). The Palestinian Authority wants Israel to return the additional land they have occupied since since 1967. -Avi Gabbay is the opposition leader in Israel, Netanyahu's chief rival for leadership. Gabbay is in favor of a Two State solution with the caveat that occupied Israeli settlements (post 1967) remain in Israeli control and the Palestinian state be a demilitarized state. - Netanyahu is against a two state solution arguing both that such an outcome would endanger Israeli security and isn't economically viable for the Palestinian people on the account they are so poor. Netanyahu is pro settlement and wants Israel to harden their control over the region in the name of security. That is life. Everyone goes through growing pains. Whether is is a bad break up or getting fired from a couple jobs everyone learns as they go along. No reason to put on kid gloves and tolerate bad behavior. The bank holding your mortgage, the clock at work, your insurance company, and etc do not care if the people you admired most as a kid were Liberal or Conservative. I disagree with this. There is a point when one simply must move on. Gish Galloping is done to create stalemates. Once all relevant arguments have been addressed it is time to move on. Continuing to address every little petty complaints launched out of a sense of needing to empathize only encourages bad behavior. It is my opinion that every relevant point brought up by DT supporters, conservatives, or etc do in fact get addressed. Once that happens what follows is useless argumentative banter. It is my opinion that the better job we all do in ignoring empty argumentative posts the sooner those who employ that style of posting will knock it off. They want a response and will evolve as necessary to get a response.

Far as I have seen there is only one poster in this thread falling out and it is is their modus operandi to do so in seemingly every thread they participate in. Everyone else, yourself include, appear to be having reasonable discussion. What are the expectations of the Palestinian Authority and how do they differ from Hamas? Within Israel what are Netanyahu's expectations and how do they differ from opposition leader Gabbay's expectations?

It is a bit Ironic for someone in the UK to imply there is nothing the outside world can do and that this is all a regional issue when the British are literally the ones that carved the land out. From oil to a christian belief that Jerusalem belongs to Jewish people western influence has had a huge role in the situation for the whole 70yrs you referenced. It isn't just some regional conflict happening in a vaacum.

I don't see it this way. If it wasn't suicide bombers it would be something. In a population of 5 million people there will always be bad apples to point a finger at. Similarly here in the U.S. police argument of "they didn't follow instructions" to justify killing oppressed minorities and poor people. When you don't give a damn about people any excuse is enough to drown them out.
-
I do even know if I believe their anger is or is not justified. I view that as insignificant. Justified or not they are currently powerless to enact meaningful change so I consider it futile to imply (not saying you specifically did) they should being doing X, Y, or Z. Probably true. Palestinians are stateless and poor. They have no power and as such nothing to capitalize on a relevant scale compared against a first world nation. Suicide attacks are terrible! There are over 5 million Palestinian's and in 2017 there was 13 planned attacks, all thwarted. Zero suicide bombers deaths in Israel 2017. So we are talking about a vanishingly small percentage of Palestinians and causality numbers on the Israeli side which do not add up to the violence from yesterday. As mention proportionality matters. More people died at the hand of guns last year in the U.S. than died globally from suicide bombers.
-
This seems fair but lacks proportionality. Israel started with just over 8k square miles in 1948 and has since come to occupy another 2,700 square miles. So nearly 11k square miles total under their control. By contrast Palestinian's have just 2,400 square miles. Israel has a population of 8.5 million and Palestinians have a population of 5.1 million. Population density in Palestinian areas is more than double that of Israel. In Israel GDP is 38k per capita and in Palestinian territories GDP is just under 3k per capita. Unemployment in Israel is under 5% while unemployment in Palestinian territories is 40%. Israel spends 21 billion dollars on its military per year and Palestinians spend 100 million a year what military infrastructure they have. I could go on and on but I am sure you get the idea. Israel has the land, the money, and the fire power. Palestinians are a stateless people fenced in and without any real control over their govt or land. I have no doubt some ignorant folks might argue that its the Palestinian's people own fault they are poor and without sovereignty but that isn't how power works. It isn't as though Israel would allow the Palestinian Authority or Hamas to create their own trade agreements, build there own nuclear facilities, and all the various things sovereign nations do to establish themselves. Now that doesn't excuse suicide bombings. Does excuse evil acts. It also doesn't mesh with the "bothsides" platitude either though because to be clear only one side has any juice. Other than their anger and protests the Palestinians have nothing else. Meanwhile Israel is a wealthy a Nuclear power. From the outside it is easy to lament who the Palestinians elect but at the end of the day whomever they elect will face the same restraints. Palestinian is not a sovereign nation. From their banking system to the energy grid Palestinians are constrained by what Israelis are comfortable letting them have/do. Israel has a right to exist but that existence shouldn't have to come at the subjugation of others in the name of protectionism. End of the day Israel has the money, the land, military might, and backing of the wealthiest and most powerful nation in the world. We all know the saying "with great power comes great responsibility".

There are ways to describe bad behavior without call backs to Nazis.

Moving the embassy was a divisive thing to do. It is true that over the decades both sides have done things to exacerbate the situation but it is still worth identifying actions on their own merits. This specific situation, the moving of the Embassy, isn't a both sides situation. This is a battle, side squirmish during the war, Israel and the U.S. are solely responsible for.
-
I don't disagree with what you're trying to say. That said I find the comparison between Israelis and Nazi rather distasteful. There are better ways to make your point.
-
Yup, given the history it is understandable to be cautious about the potential of suicide bombers and what not but shooting people in the name of better to be safe than sorry doesn't cut. Violence begets violence. End of the day the whole world knew the moment this was announced that it would lead protests, marches, riots, and etc. It caught no one by surprise that Palestinians are upset. Israel should have had several pans in place which didn't involve shooting and tear gassing people.

Trump Stands Tough on Trade War with China by... Wait, what?
Ten oz replied to Phi for All's topic in Politics
Trump only does things that benefit him. I think it is safe to assume there is some quid pro quo a play regarding ZTE. Perhaps it is the 500 million China just loaned him? -
Right and those Evangelical base their views towards Jerusalem on the Bible and not anything which has actually go on there over the last few hundred years. It is better some Christian living in Nebraska gets what they want considering Jerusalem than people who actually live in the region.
-
You're making a good guy vs bad guy argument to justify one side killing the other in the name of preemptive self defense. I am sorry but the self defense argument doesn't work until one is actually attack. We can talk about what could've happened till the cows come home but what actually did happen is more relevant. The Planastian people are an ethinic minority living within Israel's borders. These are not immigrants who have encroached or relocated to Israel. Simply saying they are bad people and then just strong arming them when they ,predictably ,attempt to assemble advantageous to the peace process.
-
Your post massively simplifies and distorts the situation. Palistians are not people inhabiting some neighboring country and seeking to invade Israel. They are people who have been there and are increasingly confined to ever less desirable real estate contained within Israel. As for the violence, thousands of Palistians were injured and 60 killed, how many Israeli's were hurt or killed yesterday? There is a difference between defending oneself and whipping someones ass. What happened yesterday appears to have been more punitive than defensive.
-
Right, lukewarm justifications aside the move was unnecessary and violence as a result of it a forgone conclusion.
-
The move served no strategic purpose. Having an embassy in Jerusalem rather than Telaviv doesn't accomplishes anything logistically. I remember after 9/11 people asking the question out loud "why do they hate us". Now here we are 17yrs later being tone deaf and seemingly crual to the benefit of nothing. It is hard for me to imagine that yesterday didn't just create a recruiting boom for extremists. Maybe today Ivanka and Jared can get some selfies of themselves sun bathing on the roof with eating cake.

Trump Stands Tough on Trade War with China by... Wait, what?

Whether it is Trump's personal Lawyer accepting money in trade for WH access, Kushner & Ivanka mixing their businesses with official WH business, or Trump himself having his properties upgraded on the Secret Services dime it is obvious to anyone paying attention that their are currently massive conflicts of interest happening with this White House. Trump appears to act based on his only personnel self interest and indifference toward ethics and the law. As a result I am very suspicious of Trump's motives, especially when it comes to business/trade, and wouldn't be surprised if there is some quid quo pro in place between himself and ZTE. -
Why do you mean Trump when it is in fact the U.S. which is doing it? It is the U.S. that elected him and our Courts and Congress (other 2 branches of govt) have gone along with him regardless of corruption, Russian interference, popular vote, or whatever else creates the appearance of illegitimacy. Trump is POTUS and a more powerful than average one in terms of Congressional kowtowing and fervent right wing media propaganda. Here in the U.S. I think we have an ugly happen of ignoring our own civic responsibilities. We have been in Iraq for 15yrs now yet blame Bush rather than owning it as a nation. It is pitiful. From Trump pulling out of the Paris agreement to his tax cuts, moving the Israeli embassy, Iran, and etc I think most Americans understand that once Trump is gone regardless of who replaces him (Democrat or Republican) a lot of errors will need correction yet we continue down this road anyway just enabling Trump. We are like frat boys at midnight on a Friday night. We know only bad options lay ahead but we continue to just party. The Iran Deal is was supported at the U.N. and included all the major players in the world militarily and economically: China, Russia, UK, Germany, and France. By pulling out the U.S. not only is breaking commitments to Iran but the whole world community. It is telling the world that there is no point in making any long term plans with the U.S. because every new Congress and or President is an island untethered to all agreements they didn't make. Trump has done this with the Paris Agreement, NAFTA, TPP, Iran, and etc. It makes no sense. The international community needs to be able to trust that long term agreements can be reached which won't require renegotiation every 2-4yrs.

It is all relative though isn't it? If stranded in the woods during a snow storm sarcasm and relativity wouldn't be lucky as lots of bodyfat and hair. I agree that we humans are pretentious creatures that massively over values our attributes. Ironically our adoration for our cognitive abilities actually illustrates the limitations of it. Internal perspective filters all data in our minds. That force is the magnet's field and not its own independent thing. Likewise conscious is electrochemical reactions cause by the chemistry in the brain. Whether one chooses to label the reaction conscious, unconscious, subconscious, Id, ego, superego, third eye, sixth sense, or etc is all rather superfluous far as the process works. It is all electrochemical and and we are more self aware of certain portions of what we are experiencing. All humans I not identical in this. Different parts of the brain can be over or under developed, people can have chemical imbalances, brain injuries, and etc which alters the chemistry and way consciousness is perceived. You say God is unconscious. If a person is schizophrenic and believes that are audibly hearing the voice of God is that unconscious as well? Are hallucinations brought about during physical stress unconscious? Humans are not monoliths. History is full of people who were brilliant is various disciplines yet average or flawed in others. It is not safe to just assume everything Einstein thought was meaningful or holds some yet to be discovered secret. Michael Jordan was one of the greatest athletes to ever live yet from all reports is below average at predicting athletic outcomes. Jordan is rather notorious for losing sports bets.

Kim's international profile has definitely risen during Trump's run thus far. He is no longer treated as a madman committing atrocities against his own people for self enrichment. It appears to me that all Kim has to do is promise Trump he won't test anymore weapons and all is forgiven. There has been some unspecific talk of Kim giving up weapons he already has but I think most people consider that to be a long shot. At the end of the day it isn't clear Kim could test anymore weapons even if he won't to. The facility he was using is too badly damaged from previous tests. So in effect all Kim has to do is pretend to give something he no longer has up and let Trump get a win as you mentioned. We have known since last September that Kim's facility is damaged yet Trump and his supporters are still beating there chests and acting as if Trump is somehow responsible for Kim not ordering more tests. Hopefully Trump's team has a real plan.
