    Our Origins

God(s) created all. She especially created angels, which became those creatures we know as: Tooth Fairy; Santa Claus; Easter Bunny, Wizards, Elves, Goblins, Pookah's, Banshees; Orks, and one or two others. Well.. That's my unbiased opinion. Bill
  2. Yeah. Brianes a neat guy. Actually, and this is the odd thing, the chatroom grew the membership a great deal. Imagine...having a gain of 200 members the day after a chat with Mike Kaku? Or an increase in 40 members after a chat with Elaine Morgan? That is about what happened. Do I think it would work? Well, yes I do. The program mIRC is great (even I can use it) and works for sorcery.net. Bill
  3. The "other" forum I belonged too had a "chatroom" through sorcery.net. It was no biggie to set it up. We would arrange to have "Chats" by people in various fields (ussually friends of mine). For example, we had Michio Kaku (Strings), we had Elaine Morgan (Anthropology), and we had W. S. Davis (Cosmology). I also had Astronomer Martin Rees (Astronomer Royal of UK) interested, as well as Dorion Sagan (Yes: THAT Sagan), Lynn Margullis (Discovered Sybmiosis), Brian Greene (you all know who he is), Seth Shostack (SETI) and several others. But....I left the forum before all could come to fruition. Would that be possible here? Just wondering. Thanks; Bill
  4. I emailed my friend at Princeron's math department. He said to look no further than Topology to find many problems that are true..sort of, but not false, kinda. So....I guess it is a good place to begin. Bill PS: as they say on Cronos: "Imcha"
  5. Life is supposed to be convenient? Damn. I got waaay gypted someplace. Call my lawyer.
  6. Hmm. Sounds like a site I helped make one of the fastest growing "science" sites..till the thought police found it.... Bill
  7. Well...there is one gas called "Fentanyl" which is a fast acting opiate, and works on the same neuro receptors. Scientists have identified four types of opiate receptors: mu1, mu2, kappa and delta receptors. All opioids exert their effects by activating one or more of these receptors, and analgesia involves activation of mu1 receptors in the brain and kappa receptors in the spinal cord. Mu2 receptors are are involved in respiratory depression and intestinal constipation. The contribution of delta receptors to analgesia in unclear, and may be more closely related to euphoria . The actions of opioids on receptors can vary depending on the location within the body. For example, a particular opioid may act as an antagonist at the kappa receptors in the brain, but as an agonist at the same type of receptors in the large intestines! Activation of Mu1, Mu2, and delta receptors close potassium channels, while kappa receptors are linked to calcium channels. Humans that have become tolerant to activation of one receptor type are not necessarily tolerant to the others. Sometimes analgesic medication is prescribed to activate only certain receptors. In your scenario, the problem is getting enough of it into a community, in a natural setting, to render people unconscious, without killing many of them. Several issues need to be addressed: 1. How big a population; 2. How to release the gas so that it does not disipate or concentrate; 3. What strength do you use? Some people will have a great deal of natural immunity (drug abusers), others, for example the elderly, weak, or children will often die from exsposure. So. Does such a gas exist? Yes. Is it used to knock people out? Yes. Can it be used as you described? No. Is this just typical holywood? You bet. Hope this helps Bill
  8. Well--a 6" (actually 5.9) scope with EXCELLENT mirrors and a less than 20% center secondary obtrussion will get you about 40 X per inch under great skies. Fine for close objects...but not enuff aperture to gain you a lot of color detail. If it is in MINT condition (remember tasco = crap) with eye pieces (probably ertle's, but hopefully Plossl) with a good mount (German?) I would pay perhaps $200.00. BUT NO more. I believe these are Canadian? As a member of the Canadian Royal Society, we have them sponsor some of our activities. They are (in my opinion) better than meade of the same size, but probably not quite up to Orion specs. Make sure the primary is Pyrex. Bill PS: I have owned 29 scopes from 50mm apo's to .8 meter SCT. I know scopes (probably not much else). Let me know how you make out.
  9. What would it be used for? I would suggest compressed NOS if it is for a car engine. Bill
  10. at the last meeting I was at (Jan, 2003) it was down to 8-10%. Not much. Bill
  11. Torus. Nope. actually, rather Eggish. The cosmos in about 1 X 10^22 will be cold, empty and thinn. Proton decay, blackhole evaporation and .00001 K. Bill
  12. Yes...we have turned America into the "instant gratification" society. Explains public schools. Bill
  13. The Magic bullet for Type II diabettes was "Starlix" but it only works with "some" people. I gave it a try. No effect. Turns out it works great..on aboit 3 out of 25 people. I am one of the other 22. Chemistry is far from perfecting this "Magic Bullet" idea. Genetic therapy will be the magic bullet I believe. Bill
  14. SSRI. or Welbutrin OD. An NDE? take my Astro class....you will wish you were dead. Bill PS: not that I condone this, but when I was a lad, it was Amybutylenitrate (glue). Blocks the brain's ability to operate K+ ions.
  15. I know NOTHING about sports (apart from Aikido). Is the scale the same as a chronological scale, in inverse property scale, or is it logorythmic? I have absolutely no clue. Is, for example, a 2 10x better than a 1, etc.? Bill
  16. You mean I was supposed to use a fake name? How else could people come here and know it was really me if I did that? Bill PS: Robert Blake might work. Yeah..that's the ticket.
  17. Well, it would be better than Michael Jackson! Seriouslly though..I would not care if I were cloned. Of course, there would be many others who would be against it for most probably excellent reasons! Bill PS: There is no evidence that the Tyranosaur had a complex prefrontal area. Apart from the turkey vulture, it had the largest (size factored) offactory complex of any animal in history. Therefore, I don't really believe it "likes to kill." I think it liked to survive and did so by eating. "Liking" would require the ability to think abstractly, and would indicate the ability to reason and imagine a thing apart from that thing. I may be wrong..but I do not believe that T-Rex "Liked" anything.
  18. The other forum is great, but I do not need personal attacks, e mails to my home and ofice telling me I will "Burn in Hell" because I understand Darwin, or that I am, in fact "Satan." This forum is great, and I think that I will be very comfortable here. The other forum is a great forum as well. I miss being there, but to each his own. Bill
  19. Humour is subjective. Besides....when you have seen what I have, done what I have, and lived as long as I have..well, everything is pretty funny! Bill
  20. Has anyone seen the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding?" I watch it at least twice a week and laugh hysterically everytime. I find it terribly amusing. Perhaps it is because of the family dynamics remind me of my best friends family (Russian Jews). Especially the quilt. When he saw it he said "Hm. I thought just my mother was like that." Bill
  21. Yes. There are a great many of use Geophysasists here (ok..maybe 2 or 3). Bill
  22. Well, I can only consider myself as an example. When I was tested in the 1960's (before Dyslexia was understood) my AB IQ was 91. I was considered a "less than average student." They tried to convince my mother that I was simply an "Idiot" and that perhaps I would fit in better at a "special school." 35 years later, I have completed a BA, an M.Div and a MS, a Ph.D (Summa Cum Laude, 2nd in class) and nearly done my Ph.D in Ecology. Not bad for an idiot. My last 2 IQ tests were, 188 and 176. I believe that Dr. Einstien said it best: "The difference between genius and mediocracy lies not within intellegence, but withing determination." Bill (The idiot)
  23. Actually I have pretty good ideas concerning image and affeft..just no talent. That can be discussed, however for this book, a photograph, especially B&W would be perfect. The details can be discussed. Thanks Bill
  24. I cannot agree more. As a person who works in higher ed, I see it all the time. If you are truly gifted, then almost any school will Pay YOU to attend. All your costs will be absorbed.

    i hate xp

That reminds me. I am hearing a lot about "Lindows" OS. I am running an overclocked Pent 4, 1.2 G SDRAM; 128 M videocard, 32 bit soundcard. Will I get better "stability" from Lindows than Win 2K? Thanks Bill
