Fake - I'm using the windtunnel to test propellers/impellers, aerodynamics in body design, and airfoil efficiency, among other things, in order to build a very efficient hovercraft. [EDIT: It's NOT for a school project - it's something I work on in my "free time," which, seeing as today is a semi-regular school day and I just got home for the first time after 15 hours of being at school, is NOT MUCH.]

I saw mention in a thread (Maybe the plutonium one? Or one about railguns? I've lost track...) about a TOKOMAK reactor. I'm pretty sure it was YT that mentioned it. What is a TOKOMAK reactor? [EDIT: When I searched, that's the only thread that I got, and it only references them, and says nothing about them.]

Hypothetical situation: Take two lasers. One is at the frequency that will excite an electron to its P state. The other is at the frequency that will excite the electron from P to D. Will this end up with the electron in the D state? I would think so... not that I claim to know too much about these things... because wouldn't the first laser bump the electron up to the P state, with the first laser having no interaction with the electron (because it was the wrong frequency to be absorbed), and then the second laser would have an effect but not the first, bumping the electron up to its D state?

I don't know too terribly much about types of capacitors and their ratings, so I didn't specify. I know the basic theory behind them, though. Can someone explain the ratings, types, and general theory behind capacitors to me? Thanks.

I have two questions and LOTS of time on my hands. How can I make capacitors? How can I make a rechargeable battery? I'm not looking for incredibly efficient, just working. Thanks in advance. P.S.: If you guys have any other ideas about things I could make, along the lines of linear accelleration, power production, etc, lemme know.

Yes, but you could replace an electric fan with a stirling fan and still use the heatsinc. I would think that that would be much more efficient and not use electrical power.

Huh. I knew it was sublimation, but I never knew that the fog/"smoke" was water crystals. It makes perfect sense, though. Just like your breath during winter.

For those of you who are familiar with Stirling Cycle engines, then skip this. Otherwise, go to http://travel.howstuffworks.com/stirling-engine.htm if you want to know how one works. Why aren't stirling engines used as heatsincs/fans in computers? They don't require any electric power, and they consume heat on their own. It seems like it'd be much more power and heat efficient than the systems being used now...

Here's a few questions on superconductors: Superconductors that have electricity running through them can generate a magnetic field just like a wire can, right? How do you make/get a hold of/etc a superconductor? I know they have to be supercooled right now, but how are they made? Are normal conductors just dropped in temperature until they become superconductors? Could one be used to interact with Earth's magnetic field to produce a lifting force? (That's on a whim) How do they work, in brief?

It'd probably be easier to get a hold of smoke than to use the sublimation process of dry ice. How expensive is dry ice, anyway?

This is kinda along the same lines as my magnetic orbit thingy. So there's talk of building a space elevator from the surface of the moon to Earth orbit. There's an article about it here. First, what if an extremely high-speed magnetic train were run from Earth orbit to the moon? Second, could some sort of magnetically-propelled, extremely high-speed launcher (like the one I described, or the one NASA was working on) be used to give things a head start on other planets? Alternatively, for both achieving orbit and interplanetary transit, what about a massive railgun?

The thing with OLED (at least I think it's OLED) is that "they" are developing ways to put it onto fabric - a bendable display.

Sounds like a barrel-o-fun! :-D It prbably wouldn't be too large of an issue, because I'm doing this outsicde (I'd rather not have the whole house smell sike smoke or whatever I put in the wind tunnel). And I've definitely done more dangerous things than fill a box type thing with very fine particles of flour dispersed in the air. But caution is always good.

In some ways, doing that could be a bad thing. Some people (I haven't really seen it happen here, but it does happen in other places) won't take anyone who's younger than 18 seriously. Sometimes this continues until 21. If you've ever read Ender's Game, then you know how Peter came to be Hegemon - he created a false identity, Locke, who was an adult, and contributed online. For the possibility he saw here was acceptance for his writing and thoughts as apposed to age. Personally, that's really the only reason I'd be against it.

Yep. I believe that that's because of the sonic boom it produces. That's why I was considering a vaccuum chamber as the tube. There's also a fair amount of research going into reducing/eliminating the sonic boom behind supersonic airplanes. The same principal could be applied here. Or, it could be built into a mountain. Like I said originally, it would be completely self-sufficient, running off of geothermal and solar power to supply/recharge the capacitor banks. An intriguing possibility. Perhaps a hybrid of the two systems would be best.

You should look into fabrics with OLED's woven into them. That's where the technology behind "invisibility cloaks" is going - OLED's (organic light emitting diodes) and 3d cameras (technically, you should be able to reproduce a stereoscopic version of whatever is behind you. the trick is knowing where to project it.
