I apologize if I have offended. There's nothing funny about finding out if there's truth in it, indeed, I do the same all the time and encourage it. Many foundations of modern science are based on the science fiction of the past. The thing that made me laugh was what I must now relate as an extremely unlikely coincidence. There is currently a rather scientifically unfounded (read: pure fiction, with pseudoscience mixed in, probably deemed science fiction) TV show on Friday nights here in the US that includes in its impressively implausible resume the ability of an alien species (possibly a 4- or 5-dimensional one at that) to modify the human genome to a triple helix. The timing was such that I believed this to be where you got the idea; apparently, this is not the case. Had I looked at your location, I could have easily discovered this. The reference to spiral EM interference patters was the alien species's calling card: burned into almost all electronic devices (and arranged in some randomly chosen blood splatters on the floor) was a spiral-shaped interference pattern. So in reality, for you, there is absolutely no connection between the two. Again, sorry, I didn't do the thorough background checking that I should have.

Very good analogy, jdurg.

Hahahaha! Spose it's possible, and I'd tend to agree with the more biologically adept in this forum. What I think is funny is where I think you're getting the idea. Shall I be looking for a thread on weird spiral-shaped EM interference as well? What can I say, if you ask me, TV science is generally a contradition in terms.

Might want to remove that link, it contains directions on how to make NI3, and knowing how many damn kewls exist these days...

And how would people know they want to join if they can't see what it's like?

Dave, you may or not be aware of this, but there is a PHP script out there that does the exact same thing without going client-side, and again, I don't know whether you'd want to go this route or not, but a (good) example / sample script is at http://koivi.com/ie-png-transparency/ . There's a link to the entire file, as well as an explanation for "installation," so-to-speak (it's just a plain old PHP file that uses preg-replace). I like it, it's quick, simple, effective, and concise. Plus, for those VERY few who don't have javascript (or those that disable it), it is a much better solution - and it may (depending on client and host machines) be faster. The update looks great, though - the inline editing is sharp.

If only the health classes in such nations as the US would actually teach valuable information... And/or accept the fact that kids will do what they want (just like you said, YT), whether or not they think themselves as kids. Then they could stop focusing on teaching abstinence, abstinence, and ONLY abstinence, and start teaching safe sex and educating youth about how to prevent things like AIDS and syphallis...

I will admit I don't have the time to read the second half of your post (plus I'm dead tired), but know this, at least: your overall concept of using everyday things where energy is wasted as a part of energy recycling is completely sound. There are many great ways to implement this principle. The only thing being picked apart are your specific examples. Other than that, there isn't really anything wrong, except for some practicality issues here and there.

From an engineering, environmental, and waste management standpoint (unfortunately it's not as practical, though), it would be far superior to dig a very long vertical shaft into the ground and surround it with wire. This outer "pipe" would house a ginormous (how's that for scientific ;-P ) magnetic tubes connected to an iron platform (via magnetic attraction) in the center of the magnetic tubes, and would serve as a garbage platform. Put the rubbish on that and let it accelerate (don't worry about evacuating the tube or anything) until it reaches a huge velocity. The magnet will generate electricity in the wire. When the iron platform hits the bottom of the hole, the entire thing will vaporize. No more trash, and power generated in the process. If you want even more power, cause the trash capsule to spin on its way down. Problem here is that the force is being put into moving a vehicle. There isn't any force (other than gravity itself) in the vertical direction. A better solution here would be to have a thermal generator (just put the gas chamber of a supermassive sterling-cycle engine beneath the road) that functions during the summer. Ever notice how incredibly hot pavement gets in the summer? (Note that this energy is ultimately coming from the sun).

One of the main issues today with nuclear is that environmental activists are concerned with the radioactive waste - waste that could conceivably be used to power spacecraft (thru the energy given off by radioactive decay), which in turn could be used to ship the rest of the radioactive waste somewhere else - in other words, deep space, the sun, etc...

That's not going to be practical for blacksmithing purposes. Additionally, that will NOT turn iron into steel, which I may end up doing, and it would be a massive power drain, especially to reach something like 500-2000 degrees celcius (depending on what I'm doing). Again, thanks for the suggestions, but I think I know exactly what I'm going to do.

Part of the process of hybrid motors depends on it being exactly the way it is. Hybrid motors are extremely finicy and very, very hard to get right because the principle is to use something not normally combustible as fuel. Check up on the wikipedia article for it; I've forgotten much of what I knew about them.

They're called "lifters" or "electrohydrodynamic thrusters" (IIRC) or "ionocraft." Run a search for any and/or all of the above (the middle one is abbreviated EHD) on google and you'll come up with gazillions of sites. The issue is that they require very, very lightweight craft and/or immense amounts of electrical energy.

I spose it would help if we were actually 99.99% certain how airfoils work in the first place. There's quite the debate about whether the Bernouli Principle means anything due to some discrepancies and contradicions in the data, particularly with airfoil performance.

That's quite inefficient, arkain - physics dictates that a lot of energy will be lost in between melting one metal and using it to heat another. Plus, it's simpler to just heat the desired metal in the first place - not to mention more efficient. But thanks for the suggestion. My update is as follows: I've decided that I'm going to get an anvil before I worry about the forge itself. I'm not exactly sure where I'll get my materials, but we shall see. And as far as the anvil goes, I think I'll end up making my own - a bit of a task, but it'll save money, and the experience (as well as bragging rights) will be good.

Actually, there have been three or four in the last couple. So your point is even more valid. I don't know why I am perpetuating the existance of this thread.

Rasori, I absolutely and completely agree with you. Some people are so ignorantly pathetic that they should be banned from the earth. Forgive me if I put it too bluntly, but that's how it is. Anjruu, evidence for what, exactly?

I believe you mean a pulsejet.

Then list some solid evidence. Any and all scientific evidence. And NO, an infinite universe has NOT always been the accepted concept! I dare you to try to legitimately cite some information, real information. And religion is NOT science. There is also a significant amount of mathematical data that supports the infinitely large universe theory.

Buzsaw, I don't think t777's argument is based on anything other than opinionated bullshit that is not grounded in any way in the scientific world. As such, it is my firm belief that any attempt to talk scientifically with him will result in utter failure. But that's just me. Feel free to talk to him if you like, and your arguments are indeed interesting, but I don't think anything intelligible is going to come out of his mouth. Or hers, if I got the pronouns mixed up.

There's a (new) theory out there that eliminates singularities at the end of black holes and the singularity before the big bang. I can't really explain it, but it's intriguing. (That was a bit of a tangent.) I 'spose if I were to picky I should have said space is unbounded, because there is a subtle difference between unbounded and infinite. Infinite means it goes on forever, unbounded means it has nothing stopping it from going on forever (IIRC). I don't know all that much about the current accepted scientific position, so a lot of my "information" is me filling in the gaps, but new stars and systems are being created all the time and are receding from each other, therefore the overall space is expanding. Again, it's really hard to visualize or interpret some of this stuff due to the difficulty of grasping the concept of infinity.

Don't reset it. I have a Ti-89 (NOT titanium) and there's a function that allows you to delete variables. That's what you want to do - clear x, y, etc. On the normal 89, you can either clear all the letter variables, or you can delete individual ones (DelVar x would clear x).

What is the Schroedinger equation?

It's fairly easy with the GIMP as well, it just has a bit more of a learning curve. For all intents and purposes in the amateur world, the GIMP is almost as good as photoshop elements.
