Ok, no posts in a while so here are the results. 1. Polystyrenes = < 1% 2. Disposable Diapers = < 1 % 3. Fast Food Waste = 1.48% There are all qutie small as you can see. I think Phi for All may have been right wwhen he said that all fast food waste goes on the ground. A disgrace really.

I'm from Ireland so don't get me wrong, i'm no genius when it comes to english politics. But have labour not done a good job? the country seems to be going well and the economy is flourishing. do they not deserve to be re-elected

Thanks for explaining it a bit better. I see where you came from now and it looks like a good guess. I had an idea of putting all the numbers into three columns in microsoft excel. This would only take a few seconds. All that would be left to do is delete the third column and arrange the two columns left into three coulmns again and then delete the third column. Do thid until you have only one number left. Just two questions: 1. Would this work? 2. How do you change all the numbers from two columns into three columns?! I was trying this for ages and I couldn't do it. Hope that made sense!

damn ducky havok, well done if you wrote all the numbers out and you got the answer right (ya big loser!)! just kidding. The mathematical way that was shown was what I was doing but I gave up very early also. Why do you only go as far as 13 eliminations when there are still nine numbers left?

If i'm not mistaken (and I probably am!) is it not C1- C2-C3.... where all the numbers are subscripts i.e the little 2!!

I think the main problem starts when you eliminate the first line of numbers. then you've got a sequence like 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9..... and so on. I think there are only two ways of doing this puzzle: 1. Write all the numbers down and start eliminating them one by one (if anyone does that then you are a great, big loser!!) 2. A mathematical formula is required, mostly likely where the numbers are replaced with ,for example, a sequence of x, x+1, x+2..... and so on. I think number two is the best option(!) but saying that I will probably get frustrated and do 1!

well a lot of views and still no reply so it is obviously a hard one. I thought it would be simple at the start and it would be one of the last few numbers but that turned out to be way out. mathematically, i can't figure out a way to do it, but at a guess, I would say the answer is somewhere near 1000.

I agree with you there blike but I think this professor is going to have to talk 5 words a second to get the whole thing covered!! definitly e-mail him again and be sure of what your getting yourself into! You don't want to come out of the place thinking you've wasted your time and money. However I don't think that will happen. A great man once said that there was lies, damn lies and then there was stastics! Of course what he meant was that anyone can manipulate figures to make them show what you want them to show. Just a side note! If your in the science field also and your interested in how many students are studying science subjects in school these days then do some stats on that. Personally, I really want to know about the percentage of people study chemistry around the world today. If anyone knows figures from there home state/country then that would be cool. I know that here in Ireland its only 13%. Goodluck with the project and if I have any more crap ideas, i'll let you know!

ok. when i said that number puzzles were much more difficult that word puzzles, of course what I actually mean't was I was good at number puzzles and crap at word ones!! these are some good word puzzles though, can't believe somone actually got that three sentences one, wow!!

Also I believe that i'm the winner of this thread because the two puzzles I solved were both number problems, which everyone knows are much tougher than word problems jdurg!!

that looks like one of the most intensive courses i've ever seen! The professor that wrote back to you is right though, there is lots of work ahead of you. I think your nearly going to have to treat it like a full time job. However the amount of topics that he says he is going to cover in a short space of time seems to mean that he won't be going into one specific organic chemistry topic in great detail so the course should be passable. Only with some blood sweat and tears though!!

The vapor density of a gas is the mass of a given volume of gas, divided by an equal volume of a reference gas (usually hydrogen) at the same temperature and pressure. If it's 1.3 then I can only presume that it is 1.3 times heavier that the same volume of hydrogen gas at the same temperature and pressure. Note: vapor density only applies when your solution is in the gas phase so if you are leaving it as a liquid then it doesn't apply to you.

My view on the whole view on our ever increasing waste problem in incinerators. They are the way to go to reduce the amount of waste going into landfills. The reason every one is so opposed to them is because of the dioxins that they release, which are only 1nanometre per metre cubed, max. This is way, way smaller than the dioxins level released when people burn their rubbish in the back garden, which is still going on today. It also has other advantages in that the heat produced can be used to heat water to steam which can be used to produce ellectricity. In a perfect world there would be no need for incinerators because there would be no waste but this is not a perfect world! I agree with Xavier aswell. Gone are the days when people used to re-use waste, e.g diapers, bags, bottles, etc etc. If waste is reused then waste itself will decrease. I hope I'm making sense!!

I know here in Ireland they are starting to get tight on emissions. But for 'big business' i'm not sure if this will lead to job losses. In fact in some cases it can be the opposite. people must be hired to build and maintain new units that are built to reduce emissions. yes it is a large cost for companies but one they must take in todays modern world.
