Hi all, If BN is the number of balls which can be solved in this particular context of given problem [ie just one odd ball of different weight among B] in N number of weighings then, BN+1 = 3 ( BN + 1 ) If N = 4 and B4 = 39 then , B5 = 3 ( 39 + 1 ) = 120 The Solution for 39 Balls I mean the procedure I will give if there is a consensus ! I am sure imatfaal or sensei will find the solution on their own soon !! In the meantime I am looking for a demo Platform [ I have one for lesser number of balls but may not have the right to put it up here as I have not coded it myself ] Best Regards Thomas

Well I was in fact trying to create a puzzle for our local Research Lab Magazine and wanted to give it as Prove 1 = 22 + 23 + 24 ......... + 2n................. + 2∞ 32 + 33 + 34 ......... + 3n................. + 3∞ 42 + 43 + 24 ......... + 4n................. + 4∞ etc upto infinity downwards after I derived this as stated in my file. Then, many appreciated the beauty of the relation and I am in the process of finding whether anywhere this can be used !

It is a nice Solution and I think you solve it always in 5 Steps and I can not see why you need a sixth step and in what sequence. Therefore you and imatfaal have solved it in 5 Steps ! Can someone create a TEST PLATFORM for this Puzzle. You can pick and load Balls 1 to 39 on either side of the Balance. On the press of a button 'Weigh' the balance tilts or balances Of course everytime the Trial Starts one of the Balls is defined as Culprit randomly and oddity of Lightness or Heaviness too decided randomly. Just a kind of Demo / Work Bench

Yes, The Balls, Shapes , Coins or the Balance are not my Original Inventions ! I had already said there are similar problems I had solved earlier and they were not my own. ie with different number of balls. This problem of solving with 39 balls is my own proposal. If it was proposed by anyone already I am not aware of it. I too have solved a similar problem as early as 1973 and therefore I know similar problems have a long history of existence ! I have proposed the Puzzle with 39 Balls and another with 120 balls here which are MY OWN ! I also have a generic algorithm to calculate the maximum number of such balls that can be decided upon in N number of weighings ! WHICH IS ALSO MY OWN DERIVATION !! More Later ........

According to me we exist in a Space with Length Coordinates X , Y , X [the three dimensions which are least number to define any natural Volume Space] which can be used to designate any Point in the Entire Cosmos. We can fix the Origin of these three coordinates anywhere and calculate the distance of any other Point with respect to this origin.But as we are not able to make sure that this Origin is fixed and not moving in respect of rest of the Spaces, we are unable to do so. However our this INABILITY does not mean that we can not imagine a Reference Frame of Coordinates. Also, we can not declare that the Axes are NOT INFINITE just because we can not traverse them endlessly with ourselves or with an object with a Mass or A ray of Light or Particle or Even @ the Speed of Imagination. These coordinates are Endless and at the end of Space Occupied by some matter lies Limitless Nothingness or Empty Space. If the Physical Laws created by the Creator are such that matter Gravitates and condenses together ENDLESSLY without any Limit THE ENTIRE MATTER IN THE COSMOS are related by Mutual Forces and therefore there can be only one Universe. But, if there is a Limit to the amount of matter which can congregate together [Like the Limit which produces a star or Black Hole or Big Bang] then there is a possibility of many such Universes like our Own Earth-Universe in the Cosmos. Whatever be the case BEYOND ALL THESE BOUNDS will lie rest of the Nothingness and Empty Spaces. Therefore we need to understand exactly what happens with the Gravitational Forces and Behaviour of Matter as a Consequence. TIME is one of the Dimensions adopted by us to evaluate the Changes in a Body and Relative Change wrt other Bodies. The various Forces and Factors such as Mass, Weight , Temperature, Pressure and Fields etc gives raise to other dimensions too and when we handle Multidimensions to Observe and Evaluate changes we adopt higher Mathematical Functions and Complicated Theories. But TIME in itself has been defined as a delay segment between two Events or States of a Body. Except in the ABSOLUTE EMPTINESS or NIL-SPACE there are always CHANGES effected on any Point in Space or Body and its State and TIME ELAPSED becomes a very important Parameter. Of course there is an ABSOLUTE TIME REFERENCE which too is only Imaginary and NOT REFERABLE. We need to bank on possible Relative References to Fix the Current Time, Measure the Lapse of Time and Use our Measurement in the Equations to solve Problems and define States and Events.

I meant BN to mean the number of Balls which can be solved in N Weighings. For example I can solve 120 Balls in 5 Weighings which means B5 = 120 ! That means if the given number of Balls are 120 instead of 39 the answer will be : 5 Weighings and the procedure to find that Culprit Ball in those 5 Weighings !! That can be taken as a second Puzzle !!!

Hi, Thanks Yes, all balls need to be identical in every aspect st an wisecrack does not use visible cues ! Can be Cubes or any other shape too - just equal is weight except just in one case and ONLY Weight IS THE CRITERIA TO USE and DEDUCE FROM !! Hi, Can you suggest a generic algorithm. I think I have one which gives BN which means the number of Balls that can be decided upon [spot and Fix the Direction of Variation Lighter or Heavier]as a Function of BN-1 PS : I read your Spoiler later and I think your Solution is similar to that of imatfaal and may produce a Solution in 5 Turns ! Good Try !!

I agree that just reversing the direction of magnetism itself shouldn't result in change of weight. But I think charging any component of the structure with Electricity, Magnetism or Heat must have an effect on the weight albeit minute !

Hi All, This puzzle is my own creation though I have earlier heard about and solved similar problems. These type of Puzzles need intuitive Human inference and therefore can not be solved with macros and programming. I wish we can have a prize for the first CORRECT Solution and I am happy to see many attempts are being made from different angles. imatfaal has found a neat solution with 5 weighings which is the best so far ! tar has given a different solution but I see some possibilities are not covered like If first 10 = second 10 and then second 10 = third 10 in the 2nd weighing we still don't know whether the remaining 9 balls contain a lighter oddball or heavier oddball and therefore the statement that after 2 weighings we have max 10 balls containing a known oddity of the oddball within them is not understood by me. I think we can handle 120 Balls if 5 Weighings are allowed !

Perhaps we need to evolve and have a better passage between the nostrils and the lungs so as to avoid all the sinusitis problems !

Hi, Thanks. One needs to be specific while listing out the Trials. From my experience I know it helps a lot if the Balls are designated like B1, B2 etc and trials listed like B1,B2 etc... v B39, B38 etc , ... and if Left Up or Equal or Right Up etc to cover all possibilities to derive the rigorous Answer. Use of Pen and Paper accelerates processing instead of just trying to solve mentally !

DNA of each living Being is DIFFERENT ! DNA of the Child is different from Parents though Spliced from them !! Replication of DNA depends on the Life Process [All Experiences and Environments] and therefore can effect changes. Therefore Evolution over Generations is a Definite ongoing Process which may Slow Down or Accelerate depending on the Causative Factors !!! Structural Changes [features , looks and sizes] , Average Life-Span, Skills including Brain Power etc can all keep changing !!!!

Hi, Thanks. Many People would be collectively creating Cells which can be employed as many as possible and used at as high a rate as required. It is only a Hobby and the Output will be evaluated Practically though what you claim may turn out to be right. I will try and evaluate it myself soon ! Of course these Cells need not be only created from Muscle Power ! Other Sources like Wind Power , Tidal Waves, Hydro Electric Sources etc can also be used to output Cells [instead of only Electricity] Instead of Fuels producing Pollution this will be a better alternative perhaps !!

Two Circular Iron Plates and another Heavy Circular Weight are stacked one above other. In the pattern below. The whole thing A, B & C touching each other is weighed together and weighs X. A & B are then magnetised and the arrangement put up again A, B & C once again in contact with each other. This arrangement weighs Y. Obviously A & B are stacked with compatible Polarity. Then B is inverted and the magnetic force is such that B& C are in contact but they float above A without physical contact [just like those trains these days]. This arrangement weighs Z. The Question is : Will X be equal to Y ? Will Y be equal to Z ? If Z = Y but > X , then will Y-X be equal to the Energy pushed into the Stack and the Energy added E will be equal to [Y-X] * c2 where c is Speed of Light ?

It is proposed to produce Units of Energy / Fuel called FORCE CELLS ! Each of these cells hold a Unit of Mechanical Energy. It is designed as a Spring which can be wound and unwound or Compressed and Decompressed. Any of the above may do but I prefer a linear tensile wire which can be wound up and locked and when touched on a point opens out and produces a direct CIRCULAR FORCE for Automobile Motoring !! Like the Clock Spring. Therefore the Car will be built with an Engine which takes in a stream of Fuel Cells from its Tank / Stack and have a Carburetor / Integrator which arranges these Cell on a platform which with one trigger will open out all the Fuel Cells and impart the Energy to a Flywheel !!! Other Conventional Systems will be added to this contraption. Similar Contraptions will be conceived and Built for other Applications. THERE WON’T BE ANY EXHAUST and POLLUTION !!!! The decompressed Fuel Cells will be RECYCLED in a Generator which will Reproduce the Fuel Cells. The MAIN PURPOSE of this invention is for EMPLOYMENT GENERATION and HUMAN EMPOWERMENT !!!!! Because Human Beings need not simply waste their Energy while EXCERCISING but directly CREATE FUEL CELLS in the Process or in other words Wind Up these Fuel Cell Springs AS A COTTAGE INDUSTRY or Work from Home Venture while at the same time BEING HEALTHY AND EXERCISED in the Process !!!!!! There are 39 perfectly Spherical Metal Balls IDENTICAL to one another in Shape , Color and Weight. Except that just one of these Balls is DEFECTIVE and has a DIFFERENT WEIGHT compared to the Rest of the Balls. We don’t know whether this Defective Balls is HEAVIER or LIGHTER in Weight. We also don’t know which is this Ball out of the 39. We have Only a SIMPLE BLALANCE and nothing else to use [No Weight Units etc] Some of these Balls can by weighed in the scale against each other and any Inference taken counts for one Weighing ! In how many weighings can you detect the Defective Ball and what is the Procedure ? Remember, you need to also find whether that Defective Ball is Lighter or Heavier than the others within the same number of Weighings !!

I wonder who all had given me those neg scores Yes we need to still understand correctly : What is matter and what is mass - whether the very inherent speed of the travel of a particle / matter does add to its mass or not. What is Time, Chronological and Absolute and why can not it be same at all Points of the Universe / Universes irrespective of Distances from each other though observing it and Synchronizing may be impossible. These are some of my thoughts
