  1. Its not always a plasma. it could be an alpha particle also.
  2. The concept of solid turning into a gas is pretty hard for me to understand. It makes sense when i look at the phase-diagram of CO2, but if i try to picture it in my head its confusing. So after some thinking about Dalton's Law, Charles Law, and PV=nRT, i concluded that the boiling point of CO2 is lower than its melting point. Would that be correct? Does the relatively low pressure of 1 atm automatically cause the molecules to divert far away once the crystalline structure has broken? im asking these questions cause i have a test tomorrow and want to understand everything. Thanks
  3. Phosphorus maybe?
  4. I should really be posting this on some computer help forum, but i am too lazy to sign up. Does anyone know how i can get Windows Media Player 9 to work on my Mozilla Firefox browser? It works on Internet Explorer, but when i try to watch videos in Firefox it says "Windows Media Player 9 not detected" or something about downloading a plugin. Its really annoying because Firefox is my only browser i can use, IE has too many popups even though i use Spybot Search&Destroy and Spyware Doctor.
  5. Maybe in gas giants, if the gas got any closer together it would bond or something. So maybe gravity isn't strong enough to compress gas to that limit, or the atoms don't have enough electronegativity to form a bond? That could also explain why they are "giants".
  6. I am trying to understand how different ethnicities keep on increasing in height very gradually. Many sites like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_height, account the height increase on nutrition. But if it is just nutrition why is it taking ethnicites so many decades to grow, instead of one or two? And why haven't countries with sufficient nutrition, such as the netherlands, stopped growing? Also, if they are continously growing, does that mean their progenitors had a very high genetic height potential, or are the people somehow surpassing their genetic potential? It's even reported that the Japanese will surpass average american height in 20 years. What is the explanation for this? Thanks, hope you understand what i'm trying to convey.
  7. This "clumping" theory was what i was thinking before, but it would not make sense in some instances. What if, for example, all the particles in a nebula had the same weight, how would something be formed if all had the same gravity? I thought of it like that, so i concluded dark matter/energy. But in many circumstances this "clustering" is much more probable and plausible.
  8. Maybe dark matter or dark energy. That's what most scientists believe holds galaxies together, so it could also be true for planets. However, i don't know too much on the subject so i could be completely wrong.
  9. Animal testing is accurate depending on what animal you use. If you use a lizard for testing it won't be that accurate. But if you use a mammal like a rat or monkey it would be much more accurate. They have many of the same human chromosomes.
  10. Nevermind. i already found the answer since no one was replying. found it over here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Growth_hormone. "Stimulators of GH release include (among others) sleep, exercise, hypoglycemia, dietary protein, and estradiol. Inhibitors of GH secretion include dietary carbohydrate and glucocorticoids." Wikipedia always works.
  11. Demi Moore..doesn't she have all those characteristics? except i don't know if her hair is dyed or if she is wearing contacts. I would think someone mediterranean mixed with something could produce that being. However, to produce someone like that would be hard because of linked traits. For example, you don't see black hair blue-eyed people because those traits are not normally linked together on chromosomes.
  12. Genetics is not all of it. I've seen identical twins that have heights that are different by two inches or more. Exercise, Protein/Dairy Foods, and adequate sleep are the main factors outside of genetics. I too am concerned about my height because im only 5' 6" right now, although my 'genetic potential' is 5' 9". To keep growing you have to prevent your epiphysis on your long bones from fusing. This is why exercise, sleep, and nutrition are important factors, because they allow production of steroid hormones which can help the chondrocytes (cartilage) in the area proliferate and thus prevent closure. If you are 17 or above, i would say your chances at growing two or more inches is pretty slim, but there are always exceptions. btw, i also have a question, how would you be able to grow taller than your parents if they grew up to their full genetic potential? Wouldn't the only possible way be for two recessive 'tall' alleles to come together? Here are some informational sites on height: http://www.unu.edu/unupress/food2/UID06E/uid06e18.htm http://www.chennaionline.com/health/Homoeopathy/2004/07homoeopathy03.asp http://www.keepkidshealthy.com/welcome/yahtpredictor.html I also want to grow taller, so i posted this thread to find out the stimuli for growth hormone: http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/showthread.php?t=9345
  13. What are the stimuli for the production of steroid hormones, such as testosterone and somatropin? I've heard that increased protein consumption can increase production, but have seen no validation. I have also heard that fasting, which results in low blood sugar, can increase production of GH for homeostasis. Are these true or even plausible? What other factors can stimulate production of steroid hormones? "genetic/hereditary" factors are already obvious. Thanks
  14. Nevermind..i already found out how to do it. Thanks for everyones help. I realized i should've posted this in the homework thread but w/e.
  15. Thanks, but i still have to annoy you guys a little more. sorry. Could anyone tell me or link me to an explanation on how to find out theoretical yield, excess reactant, and limiting reactant for the reaction? i googled it but i didn't get anything good. sry for my botheration (if that is a word).
  16. What would the evolutionary purpose be for inhibiting urination whilst sleeping? Isn't it bad to inhibit urination because it might cause a urinary tract infection (UTI). FYI: Yes, it is possible to urinate during an erection, except the flow is slow.
  17. Thanks for your help. Btw, is carbonic acid able to exist without decomposing.
  18. Is this reaction balanced and correct? NaHCO3 + HCl -------- NaCl + H2CO3
  19. Sort of looks like that tallest building thing in Washington D.C.
  20. A neutron walks into a bar and gets a drink. The neutron asks the bartender "how much?". He says 'no charge'. haha. get it. i know its not funny.
  21. Lance: No, they found out that his supposed footlong wang in the jar was actually a sea cucumber! Ecoli: How would a really strong immune system take care of a shot to the head and chest?! Yet I suppose you were talking about the poisoned food. In that case, a really strong immune system would probably make sense.
  22. I am posting this here because i dont know where else to put it. Does anyone know why Rasputin (Russian Romanov Mystic guy) did not die after being poisoned with cyanide two times, then shot, then beat up in the head, then shot in the head? Is there any scientific explanation for his survival through these assassination attempts? FYI: He finally died after some aristocrats had threw him under a frozen lake. He still managed to stay alive under the water for a very very long period of time, but eventually drowned.
  23. I haven't read this whole thread, because im lazy. but i think the DVD will become obsolete within 10-20 years if you look at previous patterns. Film - VHS - DVD - ?.
  24. It is not necessarily because they can, but because they want to, mainly for self-benefiting purposes. If somone knew they could kill themself, would they do it? They would only kill themself if it benefited them in some way.
  25. There are also spindle fibers, or something like that, that hold the chromosomes apart during the metaphase. I think..
