Well, I don't know much of pneumatics, airflows and such, so like Rocket Man I would use an electronic control and a electric servo to pull on the throttlewire. You have not mentioned what cind of control system you are thinking of using? (Mechanical or Electronic for speed sensing and PID-control.) Can the vacuum gauge be replaced by a Cruise Control Power Solenoid? Or could the vacuum gauge be boosted by applying a higher pressure on/in the casing? Or can the vacuum gauge be reversed and connected to a pressure instead of a vacuum? (Mechanically reversed push/pull on the throttlewire also.) Is the flow/pressure from the exhaust enough to power a pneumatic actuator? (Or to utilise the venturi effect better?) A tiny vacuum pump? Does it have to be electric instead of powered by the engine or exhaust? Maybe a trip to a junkyard and exploring solutions in old cars can give some ideas and/or parts. Just some wild thoughts...

Might still be fuses inside or placed somewhere else in the computer... (Some fuses needs soldering for replacing.) Without knowledge of electronics, replacing the power supply is one solution.

99942 Apophis (previously known by its provisional designation 2004 MN4) is a near-Earth asteroid that caused a brief period of concern in December 2004 because initial observations indicated a relatively large probability that it would strike the Earth in 2029. Additional observations provided improved predictions that eliminated the possibility of an impact on Earth or the Moon in 2029. However there remained a possibility that during the 2029 close encounter with Earth, Apophis would pass through a "gravitational keyhole", a precise region in space no more than about 400 meters across, that would set up a future impact on April 13, 2036. This possibility kept the asteroid at Level 1 on the Torino impact hazard scale until August 2006. It broke the record for the highest level on the Torino Scale, being, for only a short time, a level 4, before it was lowered. Additional observations of the trajectory of Apophis revealed the "keyhole" would likely be missed and on August 5, 2006, Apophis was lowered to a Level 0 on the Torino Scale. As of October 19, 2006, the impact probability for April 13, 2036, is estimated at 1 in 45,000. An additional impact date in 2037 has been identified; however, the impact probability for that encounter is 1 in 12.3 million. Despite the fact that there is no longer any significant probability of an Earth impact, the Planetary Society is offering a $50,000 prize for the best plan to put a tracking device on or near the asteroid. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis

Totally dead -> Most likely power supply yes. Check for fuses, either placed near the AC power intake or inside the supplybox... EDIT: Make sure to unplug the power cable before replacing or touching, the fuses.

Normally the BIOS and system clock is supported by a 3 Volts lithium coin battery, like CR1220.

Even if the Milky Way should be teeming with technological advanced intelligent life searching for others, the vast distances and numerous stars, reduces the probability for them to find us and make contact, in the short timespan we have been around, to the chance of accidentally stumble on us by pure luck.

For whom is it an illusion ? What if observer A gets so upset so he destroys spacecraft X at the launchpad ? (After it arrived at the destination, but before departing to the destination.) Now where did that spacecraft X appear from ? Or if observer C, travelling onboard spacecraft X jumps on spacecraft Y after arrival, and hurries back to the launchpad where he stops spacecraft X from leaving. Now where did that second observer C appear from ? Casuality is necessary to avoid Paradoxes. Extremely difficult question from an IQ test...
Spyman replied to w=f[z]'s topic in Brain Teasers and Puzzles
Well, I think your question might be better answered by the people in the math section, but here goes: The equal sign, "=", is like the center or axis of a weighing scale or a seesaw for children, and it says that the weights of both sides are equal, they are in balance. Weighing scale -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weighing_scale Seesaw -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seesaw In math you are allowed to change the weights as long as they always are in balance... ...you must change both sides with the same amount: You are also allowed to flip the left side and the right side, if X=5 then 5=X too. OK, now lets make an easy example, where I think you can easily guess what A, B and C are: Solved, A=1, B=2 and C=3. Now to my combinations of equations, if A+B=3 then 3=A+B so I can use it on A+C=4 in different ways: L+O+R+E+N+T+Z=102 and Z+E+R+N+I+K+E=99: Then I only rearranged them in alphabetical order, 3+I+K+E is equal to E+I+K+3 so L+O+T=E+I+K+3. The math is not that hard, the "intelligence" part is finding the shortest route to the answer. (Which BTW, I'm pretty sure I failed.) But if all equations are true any route will give the correct answer. The first question asked in the OP is a harder nut to crack, since all equations can't be true. Personally I think it has a typo somewhere inside it, the only other option is that they changed it fundamentally. -
Yes, the expansion is linear over distance, but the acceleration takes place over time.

crossing the event horizon for a short distance?
Spyman replied to Neil9327's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
1) A supermassive Black Hole has lower tidal forces at the Event Horizon, so you could survive there, but the definition of the Event Horizon is still where the escape velocity is c. 2) When you are falling towards the Black Hole, you have a different Event Horizon than the rest of us. (You would be able to see the light when you fall through our Event Horizon, but we won't.) You might like to read this thread with links: http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=26710 -
Extremely difficult question from an IQ test...
Spyman replied to w=f[z]'s topic in Brain Teasers and Puzzles
OK, here is the question copied from the PDF-file and my solution... (Hope it don't contains to many typos.) Without "J", "Q" and "X" there are 26 equations with 23 unknowns. Step I: First I save the following equations to last, they are the only ones with one letter in. "U" C+U+R+I+E=69 "W" C+H+A+D+W+I+C+K=114 "F" F+E+R+M+I=57 "Y" F+E+Y+N+M+A+N=? (With Feyman removed Fermi goes too.) Now I have 22 equations with 19 unknowns. Step II: There are only two "Z" and "V" so I rule them out by pairing them up. "Z" L+O+R+E+N+T+Z+99=Z+E+R+N+I+K+E+102 => L+O+T=E+I+K+3 "V" C+H+E+R+E+N+K+O+V+103=D+A+V+I+S+S+O+N+109 => C+2E+H+K+R=A+D+I+2S+6 There are only four "D" and "B", they are removed now. "D" A+N+D+E+R+S+O+N+C+2E+H+K+R=A+D+I+2S+6+127 => C+3E+H+K+2N+O+2R=I+S+133 R+I+C+H+A+R+D+S+O+N+168=S+C+H+R+O+D+I+N+G+E+R+155 => A+13=E+G "B" H+E+I+S+E+N+B+E+R+G+87=S+I+E+G+B+A+H+N+118 => 2E+R=A+31 B+O+H+R+73=B+L+O+C+K+47 => H+R+26=C+K+L If I save Kamerlingh to last, there is only two "G" left. "G" K+A+M+E+R+L+I+N+G+H=120 Remove the last two "G" by pairing them up. A+13+R+O+E+N+T+G+E+N=104+E+G => A+E+2N+O+R+T=91 Now there are 14 equations with 14 unknowns. Step III: I have been trying to find more shortcuts but failed, so lets do the messy part... (But since this is a test for uber-IQ, there might still be more.) "O" L+O+T=E+I+K+3 => O=E+I+K+3-L-T Insert "E+I+K+3-L-T" for "O" in the other equations. C+3E+H+K+2N+O+2R=I+S+133 => C+4E+H+2K+2N+2R=L+S+T+130 A+E+2N+O+R+T=91 => A+2E+I+K+2N+R=L+88 M+I+C+H+E+L+S+O+N=109 => C+2E+H+2I+K+M+N+S=T+106 M+A+R+C+O+N+I=90 => A+C+E+2I+K+M+N+R=L+T+87 "C" H+R+26=C+K+L => C=H+R+26-K-L Insert "H+R+26-K-L" for "C" in the other equations. C+4E+H+2K+2N+2R=L+S+T+130 => 4E+2H+K+2N+3R=2L+S+T+104 C+2E+H+2I+K+M+N+S=T+106 => 2E+2H+2I+M+N+R+S=L+T+80 A+C+E+2I+K+M+N+R=L+T+87 => A+E+H+2I+M+N+2R=2L+T+61 P+L+A+N+C+K=96 => A+H+N+P+R=70 "A" 2E+R=A+31 => A=2E+R-31 Insert "2E+R-31" for "A" in the other equations. A+2E+I+K+2N+R=L+88 => 4E+I+K+2N+2R=L+119 A+E+H+2I+M+N+2R=2L+T+61 => 3E+H+2I+M+N+3R=2L+T+92 A+H+N+P+R=70 => 2E+H+N+P+2R=101 L+I+P+P+M+A+N=88 => 2E+I+L+M+N+2P+R=119 S+T+A+R+K=60 => 2E+K+2R+S+T=91 M+I+L+L+I+K+A+N=103 => 2E+2I+K+2L+M+N+R=134 "L" 4E+I+K+2N+2R=L+119 => L=4E+I+K+2N+2R-119 Insert "L" in the other equations. 4E+2H+K+2N+3R=2L+S+T+104 => 2H+134=4E+2I+K+2N+R+S+T 2E+2H+2I+M+N+R+S=L+T+80 => 2H+I+M+S+39=2E+K+N+R+T 3E+H+2I+M+N+3R=2L+T+92 => H+M+146=5E+2K+3N+R+T 2E+I+L+M+N+2P+R=119 => 6E+2I+K+M+3N+2P+3R=238 2E+2I+K+2L+M+N+R=134 => 10E+4I+3K+M+5N+5R=372 "M" H+M+146=5E+2K+3N+R+T => M=5E+2K+3N+R+T-H-146 Insert "M" in the other equations. 2H+I+M+S+39=2E+K+N+R+T => 3E+H+I+K+2N+S=107 6E+2I+K+M+3N+2P+3R=238 => 11E+2I+3K+6N+2P+4R+T=H+384 10E+4I+3K+M+5N+5R=372 => 15E+4I+5K+8N+6R+T=H+518 "H" 15E+4I+5K+8N+6R+T=H+518 => H=15E+4I+5K+8N+6R+T-518 Insert "H" in the other equations. 2H+134=4E+2I+K+2N+R+S+T => 26E+6I+9K+14N+11R+T=S+902 3E+H+I+K+2N+S=107 => 18E+5I+6K+10N+6R+S+T=625 2E+H+N+P+2R=101 => 17E+4I+5K+9N+P+8R+T=619 11E+2I+3K+6N+2P+4R+T=H+384 => 2P+134=4E+2I+2K+2N+2R "P" P+E+R+R+I+N=98 => P=98-E-I-N-2R Insert "P" in the other equations. 17E+4I+5K+9N+P+8R+T=619 => 16E+3I+5K+8N+6R+T=521 2P+134=4E+2I+2K+2N+2R => 330=6E+4I+2K+4N+6R "K" 2E+K+2R+S+T=91 => K=91-2E-2R-S-T Insert "K" in the other equations. 26E+6I+9K+14N+11R+T=S+902 => 8E+6I+14N=7R+10S+8T+83 16E+3I+5K+8N+6R+T=521 => 6E+3I+8N=4R+5S+4T+66 18E+5I+6K+10N+6R+S+T=625 => 6E+5I+10N=6R+5S+5T+79 330=6E+4I+2K+4N+6R => 2S+2T+148=2E+4I+4N+2R "R" S+T+E+R+N=70 => R=70-E-N-S-T Insert "R" in the other equations. 8E+6I+14N=7R+10S+8T+83 => 15E+6I+21N=3S+T+573 6E+3I+8N=4R+5S+4T+66 => 10E+3I+12N=S+346 6E+5I+10N=6R+5S+5T+79 => 12E+5I+16N+S+T=499 2S+2T+148=2E+4I+4N+2R => 4S+4T+8=4I+2N "S" E+I+N+S+T+E+I+N=94 => S=94-2E-2I-2N-T Insert "S" in the other equations. 15E+6I+21N=3S+T+573 => 21E+12I+27N+2T=855 10E+3I+12N=S+346 => 12E+5I+14N+T=440 12E+5I+16N+S+T=499 => 10E+3I+14N=405 4S+4T+8=4I+2N => 384=8E+12I+10N "T" 12E+5I+14N+T=440 => T=440-12E-5I-14N Insert "T" in the other equation. 21E+12I+27N+2T=855 => 2I+25=3E+N "N" 2I+25=3E+N => N=2I+25-3E Insert "N" in the other two equations. 10E+3I+14N=405 => 31I=32E+55 384=8E+12I+10N => 22E+134=32I "I" 31I=32E+55 => I=(32E+55)/31 Insert "I" in the last equation. 22E+134=32I => 2394=342E "E" 2394=342E => E=2394/342=7 Step IV: Solving the other equations backwards with accumulating aquired values. crossing the event horizon for a short distance?
Spyman replied to Neil9327's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
At the Event Horizon one could say that space itself is flowing towards the singularity with the speed of light. Any object placed there will be forced towards the Singularity, like a boat in a very current river. If a flashlight is pointed outwards when it passes the Event Horizon, then the light will move outwards with the speed of light, but space itself is moving with the same speed in the opposite direction. The photons will be brought back by space, just like the boat with a too small engine, struggling to get upstream but actually goes downstream. If the flashlight is in freefall towards the Black Hole it will continue to interact with itself and keep on shining until it breaks from the strong tidal forces. -
Is that statement really proved ? I don't think current conclusions totally rules out a Crunch, not enough data and understanding yet. It's you that is extrapolating on current data and have faith in the results. Well, like I said, the processes are not well known, when we learn more about them, we might have to change our view. It doesn't need to be any new processes, a better understanding of them might suffice. The data favors a Big Freeze but doesn't rule out a Big Crunch. The current evidence neither favors nor rules out dark energy, or modifications of general relativity, of a form that could halt or reverse an eternal expansion; it does, however set lower bounds on the duration collapse (approximately 42 billion years from now, or more than 24 billion years at the 95% confidence level, according to one group led by Andrei Linde). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Crunch

Since it should be solvable and there is only one gap, I guess thats where Y belong. -

Spyman replied to w=f[z]'s topic in Brain Teasers and Puzzles
Do you think it will make any difference which three you remove ? Why don't you try it, remove three randomly, check the values and then remove three other. I doubt you will get different values. EDIT 1: I think the numbers are picked randomly -> No pattern, except for the gap in the line where Y fits nicely. (The example with Glaser is not changed.) EDIT2: I forgot, well done cjohnso0, nice work! All the numbers fit. -
Circuit breakers or fuses won't make any difference to the question asked in the OP.

Spyman replied to w=f[z]'s topic in Brain Teasers and Puzzles
Yes, very likely, but they didn't change the spelling... -
I don't think we can definately rule out a Big Crunch yet... The nature of Dark Energy or the Cosmological Constant is not well known. During Inflation the Universe went through an episode of rapid expansion, in the first moments of the Big Bang. But the Inflation ended, how can we be sure it won't end again or even that the Cosmological Constant will remain positive ? We know that the expansion is currently accelerating, the data and our best models favors a Big Freeze. But we don't know what cind of data and new models that lurks in the future.

Hmm, I don't think the timelines is political pointed towards fear of the Suns stellar evolution or geared against not caring about NEOs. Not so long ago people thought the Earth was flat, we don't know what our future new models will predict for the further future of Universe. Just because present models predicts a varity of deaths of the Universe, there is no reason to give up and resign to "It's all pointless". One needs to remeber that we are talking about several TRILLIONS of years, nobody knows what we will learn and achieve in that timespan. If I must choose, I would prefer to go down fighting to my last breath, but even hiding like a coward is better than not caring at all, because then you are at least trying and might success. When someone says "THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO" and/or "It's all pointless" because they have a problem, you can tell for sure that, they are not going to solve it either. The attitude to not even bother to try is a pure sign of a looser. Luckily for us, most of us have a more optimistic view, otherwise we would still be back in the stoneage. Progress is made by thinking, trying and learning. Like Martin said, "There is a lot we can do", and we will do what we can or die trying...
