  1. Better to use Sodium Hydroxide solution, then bubble the chlorine in. Weigh the solution of Hydroxide and keep an eye on the weight as you bubble the chlorine, aim for no more than 20% increase, then add the Acetone. That is a very short description, i dont recommend it and dont try and chlorinate Acetone directly.
  2. In a nutshell.......... Make sure it's what you really want then fight for it, if you dont get a PhD then you will have to be very very good and compete against others. You will have a disadvantage but only a small one, these days what really matters is skill and determination. Dont be afraid to take risks but be prepared to give it your all, as an example we take around 6 people a year on a 6 month contract and basically tell them there is 2 jobs available at the end of it. To make sure we get the best value for money we set our intake virtually impossible tasks, we are not looking for solutions to the problems we set! What we look for is the right attitude and determination, personally I like the guy that comes in to work in the morning and before he say's 'Hi', he is all over you about this method or that method. Target the company you want to work for, spend time learning what they do and what they are involved in. Make sure at the interview you offer suggestions about what they are working on, but be cleaver! Dont come across like a know it all simply ask if they have tried this route or that route, ask what the result was. Basically show a genuine interest in what they do. If you want to be really cleaver then find out who the lead is and research what he has written. Read all the papers he has published and ask questions on any that are relevant to the work they are currently doing. JB
  3. You might be better having several milk samples tested and see what the levels are, I have no idea what amount your wife takes but it may be low enough not to matter a great deal. Ultimately you will have to decide the risk versus benefit of breast milk compared to milk feeds taking into account the levels of the drug found in her milk. Are there other medications that might be more suitable for her at this time?
  4. I work for a UK Biotech R&D company, I agree with most of the above. However if you want it bad enough then fight for it , ALL of the researchers in my lab got there by not giving in. A few dont have PhD's so its not essential, however be prepared to do alot of the lacky work first . Its called experience . My take on modern research history. I started 30 years ago and spent 6 hours a day 4 days a week in the lab at the bench, I earned good money and around 12 hours a week paperwork filling 25 years ago I spent 4 hours a day 4 days a week at the bench, same moeny and around 20 hours a week paperwork 20 years ago I got promoted! I spent 2 hours a day 2 days a week at the bench, I got paid less and spent 40 hours a week doing paperwork twice. 15 years ago....... I became head of research! I didnt have a bench anymore but I did have a phone and car, I got paid well but the buck stopped with me and I did nothing but make calls and do paperwork. No idea of my hours as it went in a blur. Today I have a bench again. I have this because 5 years ago I became a director of the company and made sure I had a bench, I get paid a reasonable amount and I work when I feel like it. I try not to do paperwork as I consider that the work of my head of department, I have a phone and car but only a select few know my number. I love doing the lacky work and enjoy the simple things, my job is fairly safe these days and I no longer have to compete or publish constantly. I did however have a heart attack 10 years ago and got divorced, I also nearly tipped over the edge into alcoholism and came close to a mental breakdown. I have worked hard and I reap the rewards, but was it worth it? Thats for you to decide One thing I will tell you, you will be starting at the bottom and unless you want to serve fries you will work until breaking point. There is always someone just over your shoulder who wants your job, so you have to go the extra mile. I also had ideals and was once fresh and full of excitement, industry or academia will knock all that out of you eventually so enjoy the ride and keep sane, try and remember what really matters in life and dont let the job consume you. Its harder than ever today to get to the top and you will do things to others you wont like, or they will do it to you first.
  5. Ah I see what your trying to find out. In order to keep this short............... The claims are snake oil, as pointed out NO is only one pathway. IF there was any benefit the breathing NO directly during exercise would be better, DO NOT TRY IT!! The most likely direct answer however to your question is YES, coffee would offset NO and cancel it out, IF there was a balance to begin with. In reality most (just about all) of the supplement will be excreted before it is metabolized anyway. If you want a cheap exercise enhancing supplement try Aspirin (100mg) every other day, after making sure it is safe for YOU to do so
  6. The answer is in spring time and Autumn . Think of why trees loose leaves and why growers of certain ' herbs' tweak light cycles
  7. you could also try http://www.blades-bio.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=LZB025they are in the UK and cheap. We have it but are unable to supply due to transfer restrictions (seems to be getting worse these days), shout me if you get stuck
  8. check your pipe work and such for solvent compatibility
  9. Hmm had a lecturer once upon a very long time ago, who said "Moderation in all things, except the quest for knowledge". shame he died from alcohol poisoning
  10. Get one of these http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41wo1%2B8TAcL._SY300_.jpg I will post a pic over the weekend how to set it up with a box and pc fan to control the flow of mist. then have the smoke lead into another tube from the bottom, the feed from the mister is fed into the top of that tube on one side, the other side at the top has the feed out of the tube into you smoker tube where you put whatever it is your smoking. The fine mist will filter the smoke, make sure you have a hole at the bottom of the mixer tube to let out the small amount of water and gunk that will form. If I get a min I will draw it at the weekend
  11. What equipment do you have? In order to have any kind of validity you will need to at least be able to quantify the pesticides, I would lower the aim a little and go with TLC plates or adulterate the organic food with a known amount of the chemicals you are studying. This is a potential mine field regarding getting a license, so search the literature make sure you know the LC and LD50 of every chemical you intend to use. It could also get expensive as you will have to obtain chemicals from companies that can guarantee the purity etc (Sigma Aldrich etal), Which country are you in? Look at local University sites and see if any of the staff have papers in this area, contact them and you never know you might get a little help! We have a 16 year old doing work experience at weekends with us because he wrote in and asked, and he called us up, again and again and again and again. Until I am unsure if I was impressed or I just had enough of the calls lol, but he is doing very very well and a real joy to teach! He has that infectious need to know everything and everything new to him is like discovery the meaning the life! Remember when we were like that?
  12. Red seaweed is best, you tend to get more of a soft algenate from kelp etc
  13. I might take some pics of the home lab, work lab would be out the question as I love my job too much! As for the mice..... When we have the need then its neck and glass rod every single time, not once in well over 30 years has it gone wrong. I am not a fan of CO2, then again looking back over my 30 odd years I would say we kill less than 0.1% of the numbers of mice that we used to. Hell most of the time everything is now modeled on a computer! I think its a good thing that we have developed techniques that often make using mice etc a thing of the past, but even now on occasion there is a need to use a live model. I like the glass rod and pull method as its quick, and for the record you dont pull the tail you pull right at the very base of the tail so the spine is in a straight line. So the full process is Grab mouse by base of tail and lift from cage (or trap), have glass rod in other hand ready and as you bring the mouse to the tile it will stretch as it reaches to land on the tile. The moment the front paws touch the tile bring the rod horizontal and directly behind the neck and skull, firm but not so hard as to restrict any of the airway you push down (mainly as a stop point) and at the same time pull with the other hand holding the base of the tail. Complete dislocation and severing of the spinal cord, sorry if it's hard to understand but I can assure you its very easy to show in person and quick to learn. In the past I have worked with other larger animals and these are normally 'vet' assisted. Only bad experience I have seen or had was an escaped primate in the late 80's, very few options when something like this goes wrong and the animal is infected with a human transmissible pathogen. I havnt worked in this area for a long time now and so I have no idea what systems are in place, I would think safety and accident protocols are very much better than when I worked in the field.
  14. Correct and fully endorsed. in times past it was often illegal to be non heterosexual, obviously this didnt mean that homosexuality didnt exist! But people went to extraordinary lengths to cover up their orientation. Things have changed and no longer do most people need to hide who or what they are, if you find people are noticing your orientation then this has nothing to do with genetics. As a species we can be very intuitive and pick up the most subtle hints of body language, after all this is how people get together! Your biggest problem is not genetic but one of excepting who you are, it may well do you good to speak to people who had a tough time excepting who they are. Spend the money on going out and talking to people who have been in your position. But lets say we are all wrong, and in your case their is some genetic reason for your preference. Lets also assume you can spot this on your $750 mapping, what precisely is going to change? Will you sue your parents? Even if you are correct what good will it do you in knowing you have defective genes? I wish you well GM11
  15. First you have to have a distilling license in the UK, this is only considered if you distill over 1800 liters a year (I am not 100% sure on that number, but its high). So claiming back tax isnt an option on a small scale set up as it is technically illegal but somewhat complicated! Ethanol currently costs us £1.20 Ltr without duty. Methanol in an IBC works out much cheaper
  16. Ok lets put the science aside for a moment, lets just say you find a gene that makes you a Homosexual. What precisely do you intend to do about it? It highly unlikely you will pass this gene on isnt it? The sad thing is I think you could use the money in a more effective manner to help yourself, companies that charge that kind of money for what you are going to get should be shot! Please save your money, or maybe spend it in a manner that will help you except who you are.
  17. When he is able to open his eyes again and they stop weeping, I bet the answer will be yes. That is the wrong wave lengh of light BTW, use around 235. You can tell theese tubes because they have two end with a very short cury wire that goes across the terminals at both ends. They can take some striking up because of lengh of the tube and the gap between. DO NOT EVER Look at the light from these tubes without the correct eye wear and filter in place.
  18. Elephant tooth paste? Google it as many recipes, depending on age group pick one of those. EDIT!! Did it again! sorry I keep raising the dead.
  19. erm............ No I didnt look at the date! I might put a sticky on the screen reminding me to wear glasses before posting. Pressure reduction with Ethanol does not work so well, and depends alot of equipment knowledge etc. Despite the age of the post it might help someone in google world on a search, I know most hate necro posting but some people just google and arrive at a page. I like to make my own dry ethanol as a reagent, depending on the use I often prefer an increase in pressure.
  20. 96% is exactly why water is the problem! You have azeotropic Ethanol. You will need to break the azeotrope, is this for consumption? Because it would affect what I recomend to break the azeotrope. At 96% Ethanol and water form an azeotrope, no amount of simple distilation without an entrainer will break this. http://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/i200028a029

    getting into it

Fruit fly experiments and use fly base as well. You get quick experimental results unlike using plants
  23. I have worked a great deal with yeast, if you like send me a message with as much detail as you can. I have written several papers they may or may not help you depending on why you want to do this.
  24. In the UK its methanol, Ethanol attracts a high tax so using it can be a cost issue. To get around the tax you use methanol to denature the ethanol and add bitrex! Bonkers if you ask me seeing as I live in Scotland. If they dropped the stupidity of tax being the same for bio fuel and dropped the tax on ethanol used for fuel production, then the whiskey industry could distill all year every year and make a sustainable fuel.
  25. Archea, look at black smokers deep in the ocean as a starting point
