Scientific insults for people with a room temperature IQ
Itoero replied to Silvestru's topic in The Lounge
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. -
And how do you decide which interpretation or speculation is correct or wrong?

Modern diet and stress cause homosexuality?
Itoero replied to ritastrakosha's topic in Psychiatry and Psychology
It can increase the survivability of offspring and in a sense increase reproduction rate. It's called the gay uncle hypothesis (I love this name) -
The polyglutamine (polyQ) diseases are a group of neurodegenerative disorders caused by expanded cytosine-adenine-guanine (CAG) repeats encoding a long polyQ tract in the respective proteins. To date, a total of nine polyQ disorders have been described: six spinocerebellar ataxias (SCA) types 1, 2, 6, 7, 17; Machado-Joseph disease (MJD/SCA3); Huntington's disease (HD); dentatorubral pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA); and spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy, X-linked 1 (SMAX1/SBMA). I have spinocerebellar ataxia type 7. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24816443 Your ribosomes form polyglutamine tracts in certain proteins which causes the proteins to bind and become toxic/harmful. Glutamine is the most abundant naturally occurring, nonessential amino acid in the human body, and one of the few amino acids that can directly cross the bloodbrain barrier. Humans obtain glutamine through catabolism of proteins in foods they eat. As brunch I eat milk+brinta+proteinpowder+sugar. Brinta is wheat and contains a lot of gluten, which contains glutamine. Protein powder contains also a lot of glutamine. Is it wise to reduce the amount of glutamine I consume? Or is this effect negligible? If people with a PolyQ disease don't consume any glutamine...can the disease still manifest? They found antigliadin antibodies in people with Huntington's disease and cerebellar ataxia. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14718716 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17951282 Is it possible that this is not a real gluten sensitivity but can those anti gliadin antibodies be a reaction on the long polyQ tract in certain proteins which cause the disease?

I don't mean that famine and inequality are caused by religion. In countries with inequality, famine, wars....you'll often see a lot of religion or you'll see that religion is on the rise. There is a strong atheist discrimination in Islam majority countries. This a World map of Muslim support of the death penalty for apostasy. http://www.unz.com/akarlin/map-death-for-apostasy/

Religion slowly disappears when it has no use anymore, countries in Europe are a nice example of this. Wars, famine and inequality go along with the rise of religion. A lack of imagination imo can cause people to be more prone to become religious and it causes people to be more vulnerable for indoctrination. Creativity is the use of imagination and there is a threshold hypothesis that states that high creativity requires high or at least above-average intelligence. At this, above-average intelligence is thought to form a necessary but not a sufficient condition for high creativity . https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3682183/

Many scientists also studied philosophy. I think philosophy can give you a more creative mind.

I don't think the belief in a god will disappear. Science can never explain everything, there is always place for a god of the gaps. Religion will become different but I doubt it will disappear completely. It also depends on how you define religion.

Modern diet and stress cause homosexuality?
Itoero replied to ritastrakosha's topic in Psychiatry and Psychology
The interesting stuff is imo not the link between modern diet/stress and homosexuality but the (prenatal and postnatal) effect of modern diet/stress on the growth and inner working of nuclei in the hypothalamus (INAH3 and SDN) which are known to be causal related to homosexuality. -
I found an interesting page concerning interpretation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interpretation

Modern diet and stress cause homosexuality?
Itoero replied to ritastrakosha's topic in Psychiatry and Psychology
This is completely off-topic but then why are people still spending resources gathering evidence for the evolution theory while there is already a huge amount of evidence? That's a waste of resources? -
You need a 3rd party that shows which interpretation is correct.(when you interpret something) This does not exist when you deal with religion. Interpreting verses of holy book is therfor pointless, although it can give personal 'enlightenment'. In science, scientific evidence can fulfil the job of a 3rd party. Interpretations concerning quantum mechanics might turn into scientific theories based on scientific evidence.

Modern diet and stress cause homosexuality?
Itoero replied to ritastrakosha's topic in Psychiatry and Psychology
Yes I do but why is clinical relevance important? Asking for relevance is like asking for more colorful pictures when you read a book. Many things in science look irrelevant, future will tell what becomes relevant. Where in Belgium do you live? It can get 33°C today, where I live. -
Modern diet and stress cause homosexuality?
Itoero replied to ritastrakosha's topic in Psychiatry and Psychology
I just think extra scientific knowledge is always a good thing. Without this topic ( and another concerning this subject) I would not have looked into this matter. This is where most of my science related knowledge comes from. I always look into the subject matter of a thread....Most of my knowledge (which is very limited ) comes from Wikipedia, pubmed and arxiv. I found an interesting link. -In women, diabetes 1 can cause (indirect) a drop in testosterone. -Pregnant women(I suppose the diet is an important issue) can create Gestational Diabetes . "Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), or high blood sugar during pregnancy, used to be relatively rare, occurring in about 3 percent to 4 percent of pregnancies. But in recent years, the rate has doublednow, up to 6 percent to 8 percent of moms-to-be are diagnosed with this prenatal complication" https://www.fitpregnancy.com/pregnancy/pregnancy-health/sugar-shock -
Modern diet and stress cause homosexuality?
Itoero replied to ritastrakosha's topic in Psychiatry and Psychology
I think it's interesting (pure scientific) to know that modern diet can increase (or decrease) the chance of homosexuality via prenatal stress. But it indeed doesn't really matter. Homosexuality is not a negative effect. There are lot of negative effects caused by modern diet+lifestyle. -
This is your own choice/opinion of course but religious beliefs and being a scientist imo don't fit together. Beliefs should be subject to the scientific method. Newton lived nearly 400 years ago...well before Darwin. I don't think his faith really matters. Einstein liked the work of Spinoza (a pantheist) but was he really religious?

The Gir forest has a very diverse fauna. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gir_Forest_National_Park https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asiatic_lion
-
I think many religions should be taught in a scientific way, in public schools. Perhaps religion can be taught in history class... This is only possible in well developed countries.
-
Today I learned the Gir Forest National park in India has the last remaining Asiatic lions. These lions were once found across northern Africa, south west Asia and northern Greece.

That's true, you can't interpret the validity of measurements. But you can interpret the meaning of measurements. The bell theorem debunks local hidden variable theories. The idea that this shows an indeterministic nature of the universe is an interpretation. Gerard t hooft first developed the holographic principle. It's basically a quantum gravity model. I don't think he meant it to be part of string theory. I've read Leonard Susskind gave it a precise string-theory interpretation. He gave his own interpretation...

If interpretation is no part of it then how can physicists create different models, while they have acces to the same science?

Modern diet and stress cause homosexuality?

c'mon dude. Modern diet and stress can mean a lot of things but we do know what they can be. Have you never heard of pregnant ladies developing a sort of diabetes? -
Modern diet and stress cause homosexuality?
Itoero replied to ritastrakosha's topic in Psychiatry and Psychology
I think it's very different. I'm careful to talk in terms of 'possibility' because it's not a simple cause and effect. And I did not link modern diet and stress directly to homosexuality. Modern diet and stress can cause prenatal stress which can cause homosexuality. It's not defined what modern diet and stress can be. There are obviously sorts that don't increase prenatal stress .
