  1. the other effects that i didnt like was the mussle-relaxant effect on the bowels. i hope i dont have to draw you a picture and no, it didnt keep me semi-sane throughout the endless lectures, it kept me wholy absent throughought the endless lectures. its a miracle that i passed. at least you get three weeks off per month PS, if you want, ill get those chicken recipies off my mate and PM some of them to you. back on topic: i dont believe that any mental disorder should be treated with drugs. i mean, if someone were stressed, would you reccomend a pint of beer in the morning, lunch time and just before they went to bed, in order to help them 'relax'? i doubt it, and i dont see why other drugs are treated differently. anecdotaly, i know lots of people who have experienced or aggrevated problems by smoking cannibis -- and these are oftern people who didnt have any majour problems in the first place. drugs should be used for their phisiological effects, and recreationally -- exhibiting extreme caution in both cases. i think their application to curing mental problems is too problem-indusing. so no, i dont think THC/cannabis should be used to cure ADHD, or any other drug for that matter, unless ABSOLUTELY unnavoidable (is there any non-drug way of curing adhd?)
  2. i do this, and iv been trying to break the habbit for a while. basically, i always used to crack my knuckles on my right hand, and then on my left hand. for about a year, iv been habbitually cracking the knuckles on my right hand and then remembering that im trying to stop, and so not carrying on to crack the knuckles of my left hand (ie, for the past year i have only been cracking the knuckles of my right hand) now, i cant clench my right hand into a fist without my knuckles cracking, and the knuckles of my right hand ache in cold weather, in exactly the same way that my left wrist and left elbo do (both of which i have broken). my left knuckles are fine. anecdotal i know, but it would seem to suggest that cracking your knukles is bad.
  3. hmm... id guess that if you innoculate someone with antigen specific memory-B-cells or memory-helper-T-cells that have the same MHC, then they (the cells) would survive and function correctly, although im not sure. also, i think they might have to go strait into a lymph node rather than into a blood vessel.
  4. if she has O rhesus -, then youll be able to accept her blood. if she has O rhesus +, then yoll be able to accept her blood unless you are rhesus -ve, in which case your body will raise antibodies against the rhesus antigen of her red blood cells, which will clump her blood cells together within your arteries as to gaining her immunities, any of her B-cells or helper-T-cells that you get will probably be killed by your body as they will likely posess a different majour histocompatability complex, so you will not gain her ability to create antibodies against the disease. you will, however, pick up a few free-floating antibodies from her blood syrum. not many, but if the disease is present in low levels in your body i suppose the antibodies could cause a few of the bacteria/viruses to be et by macrophages, which could bring the disease to the attention of your adaptive immune system a little quicker than it would otherwize, but all-in-all its not really worth it. youd be much more likely to aquire any diseases that she has than any immunities.
  5. ha, my best mishap has got to be in A-level chemistry. we were distiling linoline, an alcohol found in orange peel, and i kept making loads of mistakes when trying to do chemist stuff to the distillate -- adding water instead of acid, forgetting to plug the end of the test tube before i shook it etc, and for some reason all of these mistakes were hillariouse. eventually, my tutor was drawn to the sound of my giggling, whereupon she found that i hadnt fitted the distilation apperatus together correctly, and i had been inhaling the gaseouse linoline that was leaking out. she told me to go outside and get some fresh air, at which point it became apparent how drunk i was, as i needed help going down the stairs. sobered up quite quickly, but deffinately my funnest mishap
  6. selective breeding takes place over many (ususally many many) years, which gives the local surrounding ecosystem time to adapt. genetic engeneering can introduce genetic changes with extreme rapidity, leaving the environment little time to adapt. sorry if this all sounds a bit hippyish, but there have been numerouse examples throughout history where relatively huge changes in the local ecosystem have been absorbed by the sheer magnitude of the ecosystem and have failed to have a significant impact; and also numerouse examples of tiny little changes, like the introduction of a new species of insect, having a huge knock-on effect that cascades into a humungoid altercation within the local ecosystem. untill we are capable of understanding the complex interactions between all the members of the local ecosystem to the level where we can reliably predict the outcome of suddenly and significantly changing the charectoristics of one of its member species, i think we should exhibit extreme caution when genetically tinkering with species, even plants, that will be (or could be) released into the wild.
  7. goto start > run and type dxdiag. the first page will tell you prosesser speed, ram etc. to find out absolutely every spec of your pc, another good tool is everest home edition from lavalys. 4nums: wheres MSD.exe?
  8. BrCH2CH(OH)CH(OH)C(=O)CH2C(=O)OCH3 i think its the blue one above, cos it has 3 bonds to oxygens, and so id assume it is having its eletrons pulled away from it quite alot, which would (i assume) put it in a high state of oxidation, but im not entirely sure. do you know if bromium is particualy oxidative?
  9. the curse of the evidence of human common ansestry thread III revenge of the spud darth tater, reguardless of how accurate or otherwize this is, the consensus usage on this site is that 'creationist' describes someone who believes that the world and all her life was created as is described in the book of genesis. people who believe that a deity created life, but not nessesaraly in the way described in the book of genesis are not refered to as creationists. people who believe that evolution is responsible for life, and that a deity guides (or is otherwize responsible for) evolution are refered to as religiouse evolutionists, theistic evolutionists or, i believe, evolutionary creationists. if thats not the common usage, then put it down to the desire, on this site, to differentiate between creationists who believe the book of genesis to be litterally true, and 'creationists' who believe in evolution, due to the fact that this distinction is relevant because: A/ the beliefe that the book of genesis is litterally true generally conflicts with the theory of evolution -- the belief that a deity created life does not. B/ the vast majority of people that believe the book of genesis to be litterally true and who have visited this site (ie, not most of these people, just most of the ones who feel inclined to come here and preach) have been slightly odd in the head, and out of courtacy they are differentiated from theistic evolutionists, who would otherwize share their name. C/ saying creationist and theistic evoloutionist is considerably quicker and easyer than saying creationist who believes the book of genesis to be litterally true and creationist who believes in evolution, and that it is guided by a deity. there are lots of examples of words having different meanings when used in a scientifical context as opposed to their normal usage. i suggest that you accept that the way in which we use the word 'creationist' is slightly different from the way in which you are used to hearing it, and simply adapt.
  10. when we say 'creationist', do we mean one who believes in jehovah as the creator, or one who believes the accounts of genesis to be litterally true?
  11. ps, yes it is possible to isolate CD4 recepters. trials have been carried out where free-floating CD4 molecules were injected into AIDS sufferers, in the hope that they would attach to, and thus block, the HIVs CD4-binding molecule (gp120). it didnt work very well.
  12. yes, HIV latches onto the CD4 molecule (which may also be called T4, im not sure). if you were to block the CD4 recepter, i believe that would utterly incapacitate the adaptive immune responce. ie, youd be causing AIDS-like symptoms to prevent the contraction of HIV. if it could be blocked in a way which prevents HIV latching on, but does not prevent other cells of the immune system latching on, then that would work, but would be quite tricky to pull off id imajine (if its possible atall).
  13. also theres an option during windows xp set up, that basically asks you in what way windows xp should interpret two digit numbers. eg, i believe i left mine set at the default of interpriting two digit numbers as a value inbetween 1938 and 2037. on the off chance that im still using this computer in 2037, i assume i could change the setting and tell my pc to interpret 2digit numbers as, for eg, 1950 - 2049. tada! no more probs.
  14. I'd have thought that MI5 would have had a better level of detection. I know that theyre not all james bonds, but they do have acess to sophisticated survailance tools, and also can use members of the SAS to infiltrate -- and given that members of the SAS are commonly big, hard, white, skin-head soldure type guys who are, as far as i can tell, commonly quite intelligent, id have thought that they would have little trouble gaining trust and sucessfuly infiltrating. i mean, if an untrained moron can break into someones house and steal their jewelry, often leaving very few sighns of their presence even when a forensics team is looking for those sighns, surely a highly-trained survailance operative can break into a meeting hall and plant a few cameras, or point a sniper-microphone at someones window. or is that illegal?
  15. esperanto is a made up language, which was desighned to be the international language of communication, supposedly being easy to learn and use, and being the diplomatic choice (ie, everyone has to learn it, whereas with english it is many peoples first language). its sucess can be best commented on by pointing out that, out of all 'desighned' languages, it has the fourth most speakers worldwide - klingon and elvish both having more speakers, along with another one which i cant remember.
  16. that was definately ammusing. ill have to remember some of his turns-of-fraises. "they may not know that you'v pissed in their tea, but theyll be suspiciouse that you have" especially tickeled me for some reason. yes, the unfortunate thing about incitement/conspiracy is that it leaves very little phisical evidence, and guaging the reliability of eye/ear-witness accounts is relatively complicated for a jury to do, not to mention that ther usualy arent any witnesses who are willing to testify, if the inciter/conspiritors have been careful. who is it who deals with investigating organised rasist groups do you know, CID or MI5?
  17. has anyone here been travelling? its amazing how genuinely useful your towel actually is -- douglas adams wasnt overexageratting, espesially about the fact that you end up having to find a non-towel related way of drying yourself as your towel is pretty soiled from being used for so many different tasks. if you go travvelling, ALWAYS take your towel.
  18. welcome to my world. im nocturnal, and whenever i want to regain some semblance of a diurnal pattern, i pull an 'all-nighter' id advise waking up at 2pm, staying awake all night and all the next day, and then going to sleep about 9pm the next day (ie, 31 hours later). that should realighn your pattern, although if 10 hours sleep is more than your used to id look into the possibility that you might be stressed, depressed, or have a virus comming on. to stay awake for that long, try and wach some tv, play computer games, go for walks, and drink plenty of water. eat alot of non-sugary food, as this will slowly release energy throughout the day, and try not to imbibe too much caffien as it a/dehydrates you and will make you more tired, and b/ will give you diahoreahh the next day. good luck.
  19. i cant remember what it was in reference to or who said it, but i remember someone saying in another thread that the less well-treated and accepted you feel by society, the less inclined you are follow its rules and to do what is beneficial for society. so, if you feel that you are part of society and that you have benefited from this inclusion, you will be more likely to follow its rules and to do whats in the best interests of everyone as a whole (ie, refrain from sexual relationships with childeren). if, however, you feel isolated and persecuted by society, then you can feel less obliged to obay its rules and keep its best interests at heart. combined with the increased ease in which it would allow paedophiles to seek help/guidance, i can definately see the logic behind the idea that treating non-practicing paedophiles a little better would reduse the amount of child-abuse.
  20. uk allows parents to choose charechtoristics of their baby for medical reasons linkage
  21. usually, to run 2 AVs side by side you have to turn off one of their active protections, otherwize they conflict.
  22. if theyre discussing actually commiting a crime, then it counts as conspiracy to [insert crime here]. if the discussion is intended to promote law-breaking by others, it counts as incitement to [insert crime here]. i believe evidence sujjests that both nick griffin and abu hamsa al-masri have been inciting for a while before they came to the attention of the law. my point was that nick griffin = racist shit-stirer who has preached racism, went unpunished for a while and has now been arrested Abu Hamsa al-Masri = racist shit-sterer who has preached racism, went unpunished for a while and been now been arrested this is the point that i was trying to make, albeit i may have worded it badly.
  23. sorry, i should have quoted to make my point clearer yes, sometimes extremist muslims, for example, can preach racism without getting immediately arrested, but id like to point out that members of the bnp also can go for long periods of time without getting arrested. its a question of when someone oversteps the mark and, like sayo said, when evidence is available. being able to preach racism and get away with it is by no means the reserve of ethnic minorities. the founder of the bnp has only just been arrested - ergo, he has obviously been preaching racism for a while unprosecuted.
  24. to be honest my brain has crashed. id like to remind you of my sujjestion to wait until my post has been commented on by another chemist before trusting it. by-the-by, what level is this? if im having this much trouble with sub-A-level-difficulty chemistry, im going to sulk.
  25. yes, all those security holes arent cheep to make. please financially support microsofts efforts. welcom to the forum, y'all
