  1. Haha, I didn't expect to be doing any of my own. But was wondering more along the lines of doing something significant enough to be a feather in my cap in my search for a grad school.
  2. Thanks for the responses so far. CMU is definitely better known and a better school overall, IIT's proximity and relationship with Fermilab is what is making me even consider it. How much research can I hope to do as an undergrad?
  3. I've narrowed my college decision down to two choices, Illinois Institute of Technology or Carnegie Mellon University. I'm going to major in physics and plan to pursue a master's and likely doctorate in high energy physics. Can anyone offer any suggestions to help my decision?
  4. How does temperature affect absorption of caffeine taken orally? I'm not sure if it's really a matter of "absorption" but I couldn't think of a better term. (Sorry if I put this in the wrong subforum)
  5. Let’s say I accidentally dropped a florescent bulb (which had burned out) while changing it and broke it. Is there enough mercury vapor or other toxic vapors to be a significant health hazard?
  6. <Stupid question> Can something without matter have a gravitational shape? Or would it only be modified by the gravity of matter not contained within it? </Stupid question>
  7. If a test was done on a person in which they were exposed to different stimuli and their brain response time was measured what would be the fastest. I'm sorry if I've phrased this incorrectly. I'm essentially thinking of the following. While a person is connected to an EEG (or other such brain monitoring device) and they were exposed in turn to a flash of light, a loud sound, and an easily detectable physical sensation. Which of those would have the smallest amount of time between the stimulation and a burst of brain activity? Thanks! (I'm sorry if I stuck this in the wrong subforum)
  8. Haha, yeah. That was pretty terrible.
  9. ...Sure it is.... I knew that. But the sum is still 22... I feel dumb now
  10. Good point. I should have given it some more thought.
  11. I'm sorry if I've misunderstood you, but it seems to me that this isn't going to repeat indefinitely. For example, when 97 is squared, 679 is the result. 6+7+9=22, which isn’t equal to 1, 4, 7, or 9.
  12. Wouldn't you have to rotate either the coil or the magnet? Or am I completely wrong?
  13. Although I don't know what you are doing, I'm going to guess the tesla coil approach (transformed down on the the recieving end to 240v) won't work?
  14. So if I shine a bright light at a light bulb I will get a current out of the terminals? I'm fairly sure if I ran a current through a solar panel I wouldn't get light and heat to come out of it. I think one of us is misunderstanding the other or I'm just an idiot (Which is very possible).
  15. Can anybody give me other examples of devices in which a given type of energy goes in (Type A) and a different comes out (Type B) but when Type B is put in Type A comes out? The only examples I can thing of are an electric motor/generator and a piezoelectric crystal. Thanks!
  16. I believe he means something like being asleep or comatose, or possibly in a state of hypnosis (I don't buy it). I don't know the answer, I'm just hoping to clarify.
  17. Sorry and thanks
  18. If you tunneled to the center of the earth and hollowed out an area in the very middle (ignoring the heat, magma, etc.). Would you, in the center, feel weightless because your body was being pulled in every direction (more or less) equally. Or would you simply be ripped apart for some reason that I don't know about? Thanks
  19. Bah, so am I. I don't need to go bragging about it though. (PS: No offense meant)
  20. Errrr, I don't know exactly what he's asking but you just talked about line segments for the most part. Not sure though.
  21. You really should have tried harder to resist
  22. OK, lets say you have two high voltage systems (like neon sign transformers) that are isolated from each other. If you set it up so the outputs were arranged like this: ...- -.....+ ...+ So two arcs are forming one between each pair of outputs. Would the arcs avoid each other or merge? (Lets assume that the outputs are identical in every way)
  23. No, I'm pretty sure that you are just mixing words around. Just out of intrest though, did you mean multicellular organisms?
