  2. Scotland: What are the equivalent of chav's called in your town / city? Neds What do you ask for when getting a ride on the back of someones bike? Backy I can't really think of anything else that fits
  3. i think it's the change in position when the same person repeats the test
  4. when I did this a couple of years ago I got Economic Left/Right: -3.12 Authoritarian/Libertarian: -5.59 ps nice graph Lance, shame you're a crazy neo con
  5. it's supposed to be a joke though... i think it's totally awesome
  6. that's the link i linked to btw
  7. I don't really know what you're comparing yourself to. If you're just at school you'll find that university is completely different and you're probably free to go off and just read the text books and take extra courses. What sort of grades do you generally get?
  8. yup, that'd pretty much be gene therapy (warning: wikipedia link ^_____^)
  9. but what about chimeras? They're a much better example of mixing two strains or even species than hybridomas are.
  10. I'm pretty sure Transdecimal is talking about making chimeras not hydridomas.
  11. I don't know the full story (I didn't want to pry) but my friend used to love tuna and eat it all the time and eventually she got sick because of it and had to take a year off uni and now she can't eat fish anymore! I don't think it's worth it. Clearly a balanced diet is the way forward - sorry I'm sure tuna fairly often with salad and lots of vegetables is probably not do you harm and is a pretty healthy, cheap meal.
  12. Sadly i'm not really qualified, i don't know PHP (although that's next on my list - just got to grips with html, css and small bits of javascript) and I'm still an undergraduate so don't generaly browse journals as a matter of cause. My twin brother is a comp scientist and is very good with the ol' php - lets hope it's in the genes and I can pick it up easily .
  13. Is the site sort of a news site / highlights of the literature or is it going to also have written text-book style nformation about these areas?
  14. BBC Chairman Michael Grade has said the London bombers were terrorists and should be described as such by BBC News. http://news.bbc.co.uk/newswatch/ukfs/hi/newsid_4690000/newsid_4696100/4696175.stm
  15. curfew zones are a blunt tool: they criminalise and punish a whole group of people to target a few. Sure some kids are bad but so are plenty of other people that belong to wider groups. For example, some terrorists are muslims. You wouldn't suggest we prevent all muslims from using planes or the london underground, would you?
  16. never happened to me but everyone know's McDonalds is an organisation of elite h4x0rz that take hijack science forums so it doesn't come as much of a surprise.
  17. bwhahahahahah
  18. donkey

    grrr...

well if they're on the program too then that's not too strange. If they're literally some random off the street then yeah, that's a little crazy sure it's a little awkward but not that bad - just be friendly
  19. i'm gonna bet 200 years but hey, what do I know?
  20. haven't you heard the song? pig and elephant DNA just won't splice!
  21. lol I doubt it but the less said about it the better That said, I bet most people interested in reading a paper are either students or work at a university / company with good access to these things anyway. 99% of the time it may just be a case that someone doesn't know how to access it via their home machine. However some institutions may not have as complete journal coverage as others - I'm at the University of Edinburgh and we're pretty good but there's a couple of papers (some american annual review journals springs to mind) I've had troubles getting.
  22. i'm not so convinced it's impossible but it would be insanely complicated to engineer; our understanding of the many many cellular processes and inter cellular processes would have to come a long way.
  23. Has anyone here had any experience with PyMOL. I came across it a while ago but have just been fiddling with it again tonight. It's very nice, powerful and produces beautiful pictures of proteins and other molecules. http://pymol.sourceforge.net/ Example of what it can do: Here's one I rendered of human haemoglobin (i'm not quite skilled enough to display the binding sites in nice fancy diffferent colours and styles):
  24. If anyone cares, I think the buzz word (err buzz phrase) I was looking for was artificial protein instead of synthetic protein. It turns out that about 2 years ago some researchers designed and build the first artificial protein. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2003/11/031121071356.htm Pretty cool
