Great animation of cell workings
Bluenoise replied to Martin's topic in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Which is actually the biggest mistake in the video. In a real cell things just bump around randomly till a favorable interation occurs. It's nowhere nearly as organised as this video would have you believe. -
Right... ...lay of the sci fi for a while eh.

Wow! A kickable robot! I want one!

Ummmm..... .....is there anyone who hasn't heard of Steven Hawkings?

There is a serious error in this question. You're comparing a species to a massive group of species. It doesn't make much sense. The question should be. What is the difference between animal and plant DNA. In which case the answer would be not much at all. I disagree. There isn't much significant difference between the two at all. The only real difference lies in the sequence not in the DNA itself.

Yeah putting someone in jail leaves them little much to do at all, but sit arround tattooing themselves... Virtually everyone I know who has been in jail left with somesort of tattoo he aquired there. Likely it functions to give them the illusion that they have some sort of control of their lives and ownership of their bodies.

I say just sleep in and let her wait.

Blasphemy!!!! All of you!!! How can you possibly want to sleep less. It's like the most amazing thing there is. If i could I'd sleep 14 hours everyday!! Sleep rocks!!!

Hmmm I don't really see how one can have charge... It's like the next step past a neutron star...
-
Thanks for mentioning it. I'll check it out. Microsofts going to hate this.
-
Yep yep it goes running out into space to never again be seen by us. The majority of the helium we get right now is a by product of fossile fule extration. It probably seeps into the oil from rocks. Radioactive decay can replenish it.

One runs into difficulty researching this topic when sentences such as this are discovered "Much research needs to be done on comparative toxicology between animals and humans.".... I knew it we're really fungi!!! Apparently it causes apotosis in breast cancer cells to some degree. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=pubmed&cmd=Retrieve&dopt=AbstractPlus&list_uids=16985064&query_hl=1&itool=pubmed_docsum Well I don't have breast's so not of much concern to me either way....
-
Yeah I found that as well. It doesn't say much on wikipedia. There probably aren't any health concerns if it's so hard to find. Sure but it doesn't really fit into medicine.

Okay it may sound like a weird question. But I know that avocados are toxic to most mammals, livestock and house pets included. Luckily they don't seem to have this effect on us. However, I've been eating ALOT lately. I think I'm seriously addicted. If I don't eat them for a while I start feeling kinda shitty. Plus they make me feel so good after I eat one. I eat at least a few a week, between 3-5 I'd say. Now I know they're high in calories, but I'm not worried about that. I'm healthy work out often, and have actually been loosing weight recently. Plus besides that I don't get much fat anywhere else besides nuts, since I eat lean meats and not much junk food. So that's balanced. Is there anything else that I have to be concerned about? Is it possible to eat enough to get negative effects from the toxins present? I make an awesome guacomole btw!! We should really have a health form in medicine or biology...

Yeah with those conditions you'll just end up with amino acids. Well you'll definatley need some acid resistant pressurized container.

Yes, it's been available for a while, and no they weren't getting mice drunk. Unfortunatley most suppliment companies haven't caught ontot this. doing a search online shows that most provide a level of Resveratol too low (~30mg per tablet) to have an effect. (100-500mg per tablet probable). Resveratol has been in the media alot in the past 10 years with claims for and against, but nothing nearly as substantial as this.

A recent breakthrough has shown that resveratrol (A red wine extract) seems to improve life span 15-20%. Makes obese mice virtually as healthy as normal mice. It seems that it also has preventative effects agains diabetes and prevents organ damange. These effect were recently observed in mice, and published in Nature. However the team from Harvard that published this study started with work in yeast, then fruitflies and worms, which all seem to have the same effect. So it seems virtually impossible that a simular effect wont be found in humans. Resveratrol is involved in increasing the expression of a gene involved in mitrochondrial development that has been previously linked to lifespan. (It's also an antioxidant but I highly doubt this is what is causing the effect.) But don't start drinking too much red wine. These mice were given the equavalent of 100 bottles of wine resveratrol a day!! That is in no way an authoritative source!!! It's just political propaganda with an MD. You should try reading articles on science based sites. Instead of pro-republican political sites, or for that matter pro-democrat sites either. There is no way you can trust any material posted on a site like that. Try searching on Nature, Scientific american, New scientist, Science etc...

Their environment. The cells respond to gradients in differentiation factors, as well as to the cells that are around them.

Yeah sine is no more than a ratio of sides. It's particularly usefull since it's value corresponds to the amplitude of a wave at various angles where 1 wavelength = 360 degrees = 2pi.

If 42 is the answer, what do YOU think the question was?

I'll post a second post as I've been taking alot of interest in this latley. When you work out in my opinion the best way to go is freeweights. It's more of a functional workout. Since you must balance the weights you also work alot of small secondary musles and tendons, that you'd never use on a machine. And those burn calories as well! Try doing a routein like this: http://www.optimafitness.co.uk/ishop/1025/shopscr316.html I don't know anything about your ability but for a man who hasn't worked out for a long time 25lbs dumbells would be a good place to start. Then move up as your ability increases using weights that you can do a max of 8 - 15 reps with. Do this plus 30 mins cardio 3 times a week and you'll loose alot of weight.
-
To loose the most weight you need to weight train at moderate to high reps and do cardio as well. Try to do a full body workout when you weight train too. Too many people just do upperbody. And of course eat less calories than you need for maintenance of course. But don't eat far too little!. You're metabolism will slow if you do. It is best to eat as many small meals a day as possible when doing this, 6 optimally. But you really need to watch that you don't eat too much. Counting your calories is the best way of course. If you start getting tired or feel slowed down because you're not eating enough that's your metabolism slowing. And when that happens you'll have an incredibly hard time loosing weight. So that's why it's good to eat often but really little, your metablism wont slow down that way. Oh yeah. You can build muscle and loose fat at the same time. It's actually the best way to loose fat. But the muscle gain will be very gradule. Like maybe a 1/5th of what it would be if you were eating alot.
