Long Time No Menstrual Cycle
daisy replied to rockstarjaiden's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
OK....my apologies to Rockstarjaiden for being blunt....but that's pretty much me....and pretty much what I'd say to my teenage daughter....best to get it investigated and put your mind at rest. Which is what I'm sure the doctor will do. -
Is there no chat option now? I only ask because I can't do the MSN thing etc....I tried and it was a disaster! Just tell me the worst...I can take it!

Long Time No Menstrual Cycle
daisy replied to rockstarjaiden's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
Get to your Doc now. Don't piss about with questions on a science forum. I'm amazed you haven't consulted a medic before now. I haven't been paying full attention to the boards before now or I would have replied. I'm sure you are fine but this is no place to seek medical advive. -
X-rays cause cancer?!
daisy replied to -Demosthenes-'s topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
However..the DNA of some people may be more sensitive to radiation damage than others, this has implications for cancer treatments.....Scott et al. 1994 (I think) -
Oh lord...evolution....sorry....brain is dead....it's Friday.
-
Sorry...eveolution is a fact...therefore investigation is not necessary.

yep...that's Dawkin's in a nutshell...the replication of the gene...or should I say "meme"? I read an essay assignment a while back, tacked on an undergrad noticeboard, which read (I think!!!) "Is Dawkins' theory of the meme a facetious analogy blah blah blah blah".....I'm paraphrasing wildly because I can't remember the exact title ....but then again I'm a physiologist/molecular biologist who rather "sniffs" upon the investigations of evolutionary people.......they are not necessary...they are a fact.

You'd probably also want to genotype the patient surely?...using RFLP or some other PCR based technique that would detect a polymorphism? It's individual polymorphisms that dictate drug response...so genotyping is the key.

Thanks Sayonara......we're going to give that a try. I just wish my boy wouldn't download all sorts of crap...such as Kaza etc. Hopefully Sophos will sort us out...!!

so that would have been worse?...how?...LOL!

When I logged in it called me "Gaisy"......what's the matter with you people??!!

If I knew how to use MIRC then I would I believe I tried that at Sun_Lizard's direction a while back...and it was a no show...probably because I'm incompetent with computers! Anyway, I have a more pressing prob....we just got Tiscali broadband and have big virus problems...........I could go on...but I won't bore you. Why is my life never simple???
-
I went away......and then everything changed! And I don't like it.....where's the chatroom? I'm never going away again! (It was a visit to London by the way...the real one ...in England...just for the benefit of US citizens). I saw the Boat Race, the Tower, the Victoria and Albert museum, Harrods (and the deliciously tacky "memorial" to Diana and Dodi....eeuw), etc., etc. But it was freezing, when Scotland was enjoying lovely sunshiney weather, which we missed. Anyway..I've wandered off track again.....me no likee the new format...where do I chat???!!!.

I love to get my teeth into a challenge....and science is a HUGE challenge! I do it for real in a research lab and you can beat your head against a brick wall day by day...but I love it. When you crack a technical challenge it's the most amazing thing. At the moment I'm helping to supervise a (very bright) honours student and it's been quite a journey helping him to understand that textbook theory does not always translate into lab success....such is science, and I wouldn't swap it for any highly paid crap job that had no merit.

I have to agree with the comments regarding the reporting of science.....it's usually on the "sensationalist" side. The "public" tend to act on what's reported (erroneously or otherwise) in the mass media...not on what's reported in peer-reviewed science journals. That's why we've had a massive problem here in the UK regarding MMR vaccinations.....the public responded to a flawed study that was reported in the press (probably because the doctor involved was a good self-publicist). This study has now largely been discredited because the main author was being paid by parents of allegedly affected children (unknown to the Lancet who published the paper)...but the damage was done and large numbers of parents haven't had their children vaccinated. On a lighter note....I agree with YT2095....I am not bald, nor do I wear glasses (huge or otherwise!) and I'm not a nerd!!

Moral & ethical issues associated with recombinant DNA
daisy replied to a topic in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
people have been mucking around with genes for a very long time....what do you think plant breeders do by grafting etc. to produce new varieties of fruits? I'm an atheist so God doesn't enter into it for me. And in my book, if someone can deliver an effective gene therapy to reduce the suffering caused by diseases such as cystic fibrosis etc. then more power to their elbow! But only if it works and doesn't create another problem...... -
Mwhahaha....I am the Viking raider (just ask those who work with me!!!) and I will pillage and despoil.....well actually not but hey, I would love to be a viking maiden.

I have very wide-ranging tastes. And I love soooo many songs/tunes/melodies that I could never list all of them....but they all mean something to me. And I'm tone-deaf!!!!

Well, I must admit I do rather like Rod Stewart/Stereophonics "Handbags and Gladrags" in addition to Ravel's "Bolero", and "Air on a "g" string", and Mozart's "Requiem" and Tina Turner's "Simply the Best", and U2'S "I still haven't found what I'm looking for", and Pachelbel's "Canon" and Aerosmith's "Walk this Way" ......I could go on and on...but it's pointless.

Tracing your family history in Scotland is a whole lot easier than England....our certificates of marriage, death, birth etc have much more info. I've done a bit of this and managed to get back to the late 18th century (1790 or so) but I let it go a bit as my job/domestic stuff intervened. My maiden surname is Norse apparently.....and was first recorded in Orkney in the 1300's sometime.

For Biologists I'd recommend Alberts, et al. "Molecular Biology of the Cell" and Gilbert's "Development"....can't go far wrong with either of those.....and for real scientists of course I'd recommend Sambrooks and Maniatis laboratory manual. What a bible that is!

Hello Dudde....no my name is not Atlantic...lol........think old and European....and Daisy is a play on my middle name. Nice talking to you Dudde....I'd love to coincide with you in the chat room sometime!

Right now I'm re-reading "Clarissa" by Samuel Richardson...a very early 18th century novel. But I read anything from pulp fiction to classics....I'm going to get into Vikram Seth's "A suitable Boy" next which I keep attempting but get side tracked from. Sorry...the sentence construction was way off there but hey, I'm in a rush!

My real first name means "shining sea"....figure it out.
