  1. What do you think is a better approach in research (and why): a) Use a technique you're highly experienced in to test many different systems/theories, or b) Use many different techniques to explore the particular problem/area you are interested in. I ask this because I think if you want to make money in science you choose path a) but if you are really into academic research and problem solving you'll choose path b).
  2. Sorry but I get totally pissed off when people completely ignore Rosalind Franklin's input...it was her data that gave Watson and Crick the clue to the puzzle and because she tragically died (of cancer) before the award of the Nobel prize she was not included. Ironically, it was possibly her exposure to radioisotopes during her studies that caused her cancer. Apparently she was a meticulous scientist (cut short in her prime) who would probably have gone on to make major contributions to the scientific world.
  3. S'cuse me Atinymonkey but you do know that ol' Watson and Crick could never (and I mean NEVER) have worked out the double helix if it wasn't for the sterling work (in X-Ray crystallography) carried out by Rosalind Franklin...whose results were given to Watson and Crick by Maurice Wilkins?

    aww man

Sounds like you did fine Dudde...onya!!
  5. I didn't see this report Greg until you posted....this is outrageous. Scotland, up till now (and I mean the last 20-30 years maybe) it seems, has had a reasonable record on integration. Racism used to be practically unknown in Scotland....what's gone wrong? Let me be controversial....maybe the great unwashed think that the immigrants will take the jobs that they (the great unwashed) are unwilling to do? Excuse me for being old-fashioned but I would sweep streets if it was my only means of income. I know of several (native Scottish) families in my small town who are a complete waste of space and have never done an honest days work in their nasty little lives. I suspect that immigrants would do these jobs but our native population wouldn't and they then feel justified in chattering on about immigrants stealing jobs.
  6. Ahh....the slippery slope, thin end of the wedge, it only needs a start..etc. etc. etc. If it means the police have more time to spend on the hard drug dealers then I'm all for it but they're under-resourced anyway so I doubt it will make a diff. And I suspect that this is what it's really all about....cutting costs.
  7. would you be terribly offended if I point out that it's "per se" and not "persay"? Sorry - just had to do it.
  8. I'm rather fond of Rudyard Kipling's "If" myself...and John Donne, T.S. Eliot etc.

  15. I have a couple of papers (2 first authorships and a 6th) and hopefully another 3rd and first soon. I don't know if I'll get anything from my present post though....disappointingly.....science is so full of peaks and troughs....I'm depressed just now because I thought I had a kick-ass result but I didn't!!! C'est la vie.
  16. Sepalltullica (or whatever your name is)...I'm not incompetent..I do make mistakes I admit as everyone does (show me the person who never made a mistake and I'll show you the person who never made anything) but I refuse to walk into another group leaders lab and demand things. NOT the way to win friends and influence people. And as for all you other lovely boys......thank you for the kind words....and nice you missed me Dudde.
  17. I don't think the "right" person only comes along once in a lifetime....I think we all meet lots of "possibles". And, lads, lots of women ....like me......are more attracted by a man who can make them laugh and treat them on an equal footing than some muscle-bound git who only thinks of his work/sport/having a trophy girlfriend to hang on his arm. That's not to say we can't appreciate a good looking man but he better have something in the brains department too.

  22. Right.....Timokay I know nothing about homeopathy but I DO know that homeostasis and immunity are separate pathways/mechanisms. Please give me a recent reference for a peer-reviewed review/journal article that explains the mechanism or the latest evidence supporting the efficacy of homeopathy. And I mean a JOURNAL with an impact factor of greater than 1 at the very least. I do not mean some website or ancient text published by the vanity press.

    I've decided.....I'd like an avatar/icon....whatever the heck they're called.....but I want something unique....how do I do that?
