Ah, I see what you mean. No, you are correct; the actual POINT of the north pole is above Greenland, while the whole area around it including Greenland and some of Canada could be considered within the north pole area. Hmm. I actually did some searches and browsed through dozens of pictures and links and it seems that: 1) the ice is at an all-time low for April (http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/) 2) There is something wrong with the satellite image: 14.43. mil. km^2 of ice is obviously not visible. Instead, here is the image the linked site offers for April Although you are correct in that the ice is melting at an alarming rate, there is still a substantial amount of it around the pole, which the satellite image from Google Earth fails to display. Also, see this:
-
Yes, the entire north pole melted overnight. Jokes aside, my google earth shows about the expected amount of snow, so I'm not really sure what happened there. Are you sure you were looking at a satellite and not a map? As you can see, there is plenty of snow over Greenland and Svalbard.

Can you explain aether to me? I'm not sure I really understand it. I read up a bit on wikipedia and I don't see the difference between aether and space. I think it is similar to this thread of mine where you've already responded: http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/96915-why-isnt-the-statement-there-is-no-perfect-vacuum-in-space-logicallymathematically-flawed/ It seems to me that me equating vacuum to just space in that thread (i.e. space/vacuum is everything besides matter) is the same as aether. Could you explain why the aether wind (which was disproved in the M-M experiment) would be completely necessary. Thanks in advance.

No, the effects are much too negligible. I really don't know how you've never heard of it, it has been well known for a few hundred years that gravity falls off with distance. See Newton's inverse-square law: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton%27s_law_of_universal_gravitation How else would gravity work if it didn't fall off with distance? Everything would be one body in the universe.
-
No, it is always dependent on the distance from the object, hence the inverse square law. So, the higher you are, the lesser the effect of gravitation on you. There's even a greater effect at sea level than, say, on a mountain.

Why am I banned, but bullies aren't?
Lord Antares replied to quickquestion's topic in Suggestions, Comments and Support
For the record, I'm not talking about either of you. I don't remember who posted what, but I know that he/she called you a senile old man, which is very rude. I was talking more about the newer members (not to name anyone in particular) who had nothing better to contribute than some one-liner insults. I am not that type of person, but the MODS themselves asked that this be the standard course of action when dealing with those kinds of posts and specifically not that people take it into their own hands. At least I could respect that. Again, I have not seen anything inappropriate by you or dimreeper specifically. -

Lord Antares replied to quickquestion's topic in Suggestions, Comments and Support
Perhaps not, but the point is that people should have reported inappropriate behavior instead of starting a flame chain. If you see a crazy person in public spouting nonsense about the illuminati and harassing people, you call the authorities, instead of arguing with him and thus making even more of a fuss. Also, I think the other members DID start insulting him/her first, instead of the argument. The blame goes both ways. -
Interesting finding about PI and scientific constants
Lord Antares replied to theodorenghiem's topic in Classical Physics
Yes, exactly. 10 million digits is enormous and there are bound to be coincidental correspondences with "significant" numbers. I am sure you could find your (or someone's close to you) birth date and year in there. This doesn't mean anything, it is a basic coincidence. -

Lord Antares replied to quickquestion's topic in Suggestions, Comments and Support
I agree that the ''bullying'' was unnecessary. Not because they were wrong, but because they cluttered the thread with off-topic banter. From the perspective of both sides, you should have reported them if you didn't like their behavior and they, likewise, should have reported you if they didn't like it. I agree with what the mods said. If I were a mod, I would have closed the thread, not for the insulting, but because it started going off-topic. Having 4-5 different members flaming you is unproductive and completely unnecessary and was a mistake from their part as well. As StringJunky said, this is a science forum, not facebook. Everyone should focus more on the content, not personalities. -
Thanks. I'm slightly embarrassed for not using the obvious method of googling twice now. Hopefully, I can find something fast around, because if not, it might take a month or so to reach me.

Thank you for this. Somehow I didn't think to check the normal temps for MY cpu. I assume the advised course of action would be to buy a fan. Is it possible to make it silent? Or is there an alternative cooling method?
-
Please stop using the word paradox. It doesn't mean what you think it does. I'm not sure what you're arguing here exactly. There is no element of clairvoyance anywhere. Something that useful, positively novel or otherwise interesting will be met with praise. It is because it is useful that it becomes used; there is no clairvoyance. Einstein didn't ''predict'' GR because he was clairvoyant. He used his vast understanding of physics and astute logical reasoning to deduce a new model for the laws of the universe. It turned out to be correct.

I did a temp test and here are the results: The first image is while ''standing still'', and the other is while alt+tabbed from the game. What does this tell you? I'm not sure if the temp would rise after playing for a long time or if it would be higher with the in-game window open, rather than minimized. Isn't this a normal temp?
-
Did you even read my post on this?
-
It happens on both Steam and non-steam games. Since I reinstalled my windows and everything, I think it must be a hardware issue. As I said, fans might help, but my comp is already reasonably loud.
-
What are you talking about? Since when are women brainwashed into returning to their abusive boyfriends? If anything, they are generally discouraged to do so, especially today. To emphasize because some people seem to think to think otherwise, being a woman today is better than ever in history. I think you are one too and you shouldn't make unfounded claims like these. ''China tortures dogs'' is a very general statement. In some countries in Africa, people are still publicly stoned to death for the most trivial deeds, but people seem to care more about dogs than humans. That pisses me off and shows hypocrisy and irony. If you care more about dogs, you are part of the problem. Otherwise speaking, I agree that people in general are too insensitive and incosiderate. This bothers me as well but I don't know what is gained by opening a thread about it here.

Yes. That's why I thought it is most likely an issue of overheating or something irregular like that. I turned down the graphics settings and the exact same thing happened with the same patterns; further indicating that it's not a spec issue. It's a desktop PC and yes, I did do some temperature tests and the temp was heightened. But as I said, I am reluctant to add coolers because they will make my already loud comp even louder. That being said, I played a ~2 hour session today and it didn't stutter! At first I thought it rangerx's suggestion solved it, but it makes no sense to me, since it didn't indicate a change before and after turning the windows updates off. We will see, a sample size of 1 session isn't enough.
-
This makes no sense. It is not clairvoyance, it is the fact that others were inspired by the work and thus the culture was shaped a bit differently. This is mainly concerning art and music. It is like saying that Einstein was clairvoyant for inventing GR because he knew people would use GR afterwards. It makes no sense. Or do you have some tangible examples you want to talk about?

Thanks for the attempt, but there was no difference AT ALL. While still, the CPU usage was 1% and about 40+% while in game (Red Orchestra 2/ Rising storm), but keep in mind that is while alt+tabbed; the usage would be higher in the actual game. I did exactly what you said but it was still hovering over 40%, no difference whatsoever. Yes, I was thinking this might be the most likely answer. It has been a few years, so it's definitely old in that regard. It is not weak for the games I'm trying to play, it is just generally old. Can that be an issue as well? Yes, GPU is the first thing you'd think. What would you recommend?
-
How is that possible? How does having automatic updates bring the CPU up to 80-100%? Anyways, I disabled them (chose the ''notifiy me when updates are available'' option) and did a quick test and it still happens. I think I did some temperature tests before and it's quite hot, although not as much as one would think given the issue. Maybe I could try with coolers? But then my PC would be louder than it already is. EDIT: Btw, it only happens with video games. never with videos of any kind etc.
-
I've had this problem for a long time. Basically, in vide games the FPS constantly switches from normal to unplayable with regular patterns are regular duration. I will play normally for 15-20 seconds then get 10 seconds of unplayable gameplay. It's completely distracting. I know it's not that the computer is weak because I've played the same games before with no stuttering and the fact that it can run very well when these episodes aren't happening reinforces the thought that it's something else. I've cleaned the comp, reinstalled windows, changed processor paste, ran virus checks and everything I can imagine, yet this problem keeps coming back. I've avoided solving it because I haven't played video games in some time. It happens in ALMOST all games. There are some older ones which run well, but most of them have the exact same issue, even though the shouldn't, considering the specs. Can anyone recommend anything? Any ideas? This is pestering me.

I know, but we have cloud-to-ground and ground-to-cloud in both types of lightning. I think both need to be there. So you may have witnessed ground-to-cloud lightning or the return stroke of the regular cloud-to-ground lightning.

Two chemists walk into a bar, The first one says ''I'll have H2o.'' The second one says ''I'll have H2o too.'' The second chemist dies.

Today I learned that there is a wikipedia article about wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia

I THINK (not 100% sure) that we almost always see the upward stroke, even though both the downward one and the upward one happen. So it might have been a normal lightning and you saw the upward one pronounced. I would have to go back to research that as I'm speaking from memory.
