Very elegant analogy MigL. Edit: This will most probably end up in me admiting to being dense but in the name of "there are no stupid questions" I have to ask... If the 2D beings start off traveling parallel to each other on their plane in a direction - say we call it north, they will never meet each other. Say they are 1m apart from each other and being situated parallel to each other, the distance between them will stay to be 1m forever. If we add the 3rd dimention and we start off at the equator again 1m appart from each other and travel to the north pole direction, we will pass the north pole exactly 1m appart from each other - just like when we started off. Again the distance between us will stay to be 1m forever. Assuming we start off in the 2D world or the 3D world parallel to each other but the goal of our travel is a certain point at a distance, in both worlds we will and up meeting at that point - we are not travelling parallel to each other in both these cases. So is your analogy not as elegant as I initially thought it was or am I just missing something trivial here? It is 2am and I'm very tired so it might be the latter.

Youre right, I should have said "area of research"

Maybe becsuse history is the most falsified area of science.

+1 KipIngram. Especially the quote above. I would add that the "global village" besides creating polarization on all areas of interaction also added (for lack of better phrasing) - an "unhealthy level of political correctness" which distorts exchange of information. It is especially noticeable in social media where only highlights of issues are being discussed completely lacking the crucial details which are the most relevant to a given issue. It is a shame that all those wonderful networking technologies we created in the last 30 years are in a big part used for dumbing ourselves by the means of social media, completely useless smartphone apps and other useless stuff which is out there just to draw bandwidth and gather/sell user data.

According to wikipedia, Kathy Griffin is an actor, comedian and gay & lesbian activist. No matter how moronic her video is and it is over the top by a long way, it is plain abuse to compare it to real beheadings and state that her video is "ISIS terrorist level"

I would encourage everybody to calm down. What Cathy Griffin did is just the stuff that women do in locker rooms.

Scientific insults for people with a room temperature IQ

If you'd fall from the the level of your ego to the level of your IQ you surely wouldn't survive. -
What if science never discovers what made life?

This is almost 30 years old but I find this talk very insightful and relevant to this thread:

As far as finding out how to "marry" GR & QM I think that there are far more things to discover than we can imagine. Our current models work great to describe the reality which is within our current reach but surely there has to be so much more. Despite having really accurate and beautiful models like GR we are still incapable of fully grasping the true nature of basinc things around us like gravity and time...which leads to exotic theories in physics like the multiverse or some really exotic theories in philosophy. I think that the existence of those exotic theories is kind of an indication that there has to be much more. String theory seems to be the best current contender for the theory of quantum gravity and it seems to be on the right track for discovering that "much more" which is there to discover. I just wish I will be still alive with a functional brain to witness new, powerful discoveries. I'd like to think that there are still new things/theories out there to discover which are of the magnitude of GR or greater.

Study Finds Link Between Brain Damage and Religious Fundamentalism.

You know very well where you lied and still your arrogance is only equal to your stubbornness. I'm done with conversing with you on this subject. -
Study Finds Link Between Brain Damage and Religious Fundamentalism.
koti replied to koti's topic in Science News
You straigh up lie to my and everydody elses faces here to justify your agenda. Its disgusting. Don't do it again. Let me give you some advice (again) and please listen this time; If you attempt to defend a concept or agenda for legitimate and sincere reasons it will have a way of defending itself. If you do not have sincere motives and try to force your agenda by bending, twisting and lying you will always fail - its just a matter of time. With such failure (like yours here) youre loosing your credibility which is very difficult and timely to regain. On top of loosing credibility youre also diminishing your own intelligence in the eyes of others and in the eyes of youreself. Don't go this route again. By going down this road youre only hurting youreself. -
Study Finds Link Between Brain Damage and Religious Fundamentalism.

You stated that this study found a link between brain damage and atheism. Please stop evading my question by shifting (again) into impying that I said something which I didnt (I never reffered to your belief in god) Just answer the question - where does it state in this study that theres a link between brain damage and atheism. -

I'm sure broadening of knowledge would at least cause a shift from conservative beliefs like creationism. I must have missed that. Could you point out where that can be found in that study? And also what does my belief or lack of it have to do with this or any other scientific study? -
Study Finds Link Between Brain Damage and Religious Fundamentalism.

That doesn't surprise me too. What surprises me is that this has been going on for millenia and still a vast majority of people are susceptible to the brain washing. I can understand that the ancient Egyptians due to complete lack of education were an easy target for spreading fear and brainwashing them into believing that sun eclipses are wrath of the gods but modern days? I hope that within my lifetime more and more people will start waking up. -
As far as refraction (separation of the beam into other wavelenghts) swansont in right. As far as reflection (splitting the beam) here's a photo of what happens when you shine a 532nm/350mW green laser into a 0,4 carat cut diamond - you just get a bunch of beams:
-
My 532nm handheld green laser does not refract (at least not enough to notice visually) into any other other wavelenghts when shot through a prism.

My thoughts exactly but you put them in a more coherent form than I did adding some meat to it. Not being able to isolate gravity from other contributors to spacetime is pribably a better aproach than what I said that its missing. By missing, I meant that gravity defends itself from team play within QM models. I'm thinking...in various modern theories, maybe gravity doesn't have to contribute to spacetime and maybe it is not a sum of all other contributors to spacetime. Maybe gravity is just a property of spacetime and it doesnt have to be analysed in such a way. If we look at GR, gravity doesnt seem to be a force anyway so maybe treating it only like a property of spacetime changing under the influence of conditions makes sense. In such a case would it make sense to refer to gravity as a contributor? I would love to know what are your thoughts after youre done with the article and let us know in this thread. As a side note, and Im only mentioning this as I noticed you make the same typo in many other threads - its Heisenberg not Heisenburg
-
Sure. Unfortunately QED is missing one tiny detail just like any other quantum field theory so far - gravity.
-
As far as I know, the behavior of gravity on the quantum level is unlcear and results in null theories and infinities when combined with GR. QFT's predictions are unfortunately impossible to confirm anytime soon (if ever) due to the small scale which cannot be probed experimentally without some ridiculous amounts of energy. As I understand these guys are assuming and basing their investigation on the above thats why I used the term "thin" By no means I'm an expert on QM so I might be wrong. Nevertheless, this seems very interesting and I will try to dig through it more thoroughly over the weekend which will be a challenge for me.
-
On one hand this seems thin because it relies on QFT and assumes obedience to GR on the quantum level but on the other hand it resolves the awful cosmological constant problem and dark energy weirdness. Very interesting, great find Strange.

Free will is impared by indoctrination. If children are raised in religious schools it biases them in far more cases than in a case which zapatos represents. I have not stated that 100% of children would turn out one way - stop putting words into my mouth. You seem a smart kid for your age but your arrogance diminishes your intellect.Thats it, Im done with this thread.

Agreed.
