I wonder if the psychotic obsession with race on both sides in the US is going to ever end.

Psychiatry Does Not Exist or Should Not Exist
koti replied to BillNye123's topic in Psychiatry and Psychology
So I guess Schizophrenia and Dementia do not exist and are just imaginative illnesses according to you? There are also millions of suicidal children out there who are being treated by psychiatrists, don’t they exist as well? -
Not accurate in its entirety. Evidently, she thought that using a private jet is a gift to god too: "Criticism does focus on Teresa's character statement produced in the Charles Keating case, where Keating was charged with fraud following high-profile business failures. Keating had donated millions of dollars to Mother Teresa and had lent her his private jet when she visited the United States"

Yep, storage of gathered heat would be an issue in really cold areas so a circulation pump would probably be a must. Thanks for the book tips.

The 11 dimensions of string theory
koti replied to QuantumT's topic in Modern and Theoretical Physics
Theres the Many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics which was formulated in the 1950's but it has nothing to do with string theory or extra dimensions. Edward Witten's M-theory is an 11 dimensional interpretation of String Theory but its as far from "other worlds" as night and day. Keep in mind that extra dimensions are very easy to work with mathematically and when they pop up, its because equations fall into place with them. They're just additional variables and I'm yet to meet a mathematician or physicist who could imagine them or talk about them in any meaningful manner - this is reserved for non science people. String theories do predict super small spacial dimensions which are Planck size, many orders of magnitude smaller than any particle size. As to testing those, we are not experimentally capable of such tests. Too much energy needed besides we'd colapse matter into super tiny black holes in our particle accelerators if we ever were capable of building them to test such high energies/small scales. The most interesting part in 11 dimensional M-theory is that gravity not only can be neatly incorporated into the theory but it is an inevitable and intrinsic part of it whereas all other attempts at marrying GR and QM end up with contradictions and infinities. -
Thats some pretty neat efficiency comparisons. I wonder how much the black 2.0 paint would add, probably a few percent not more. Still a viable idea for house heating...that is if youre willing to use miles of hose

Geriatric tantric voyages is all we’re left with when fluidity kicks in.
-
Although Im all for people expressing their own versions of sexualiy as long as its with consent, in my own case I would like to keep away from „fluidity” as long as possible. Thank goodness I’m not experiencing any fluidity yet.

I’m decent at welding aluminium but I get the point.
-
Thats why I anticipated to use some other, more efficient liquid 2% more by sanding down metal compared to pitch black paint? I dont get it. The „box” I gave dimentions to is a long, thin, flat rooftop container, could wven make it 6cm instead of 10cm but the pump would have to do more work. I agree that a long, spiral shaped hose would do aproximately the same job (despite aluminum being a better heat conductor) but thats not the main issue here. The reason for so much water in such a big container is to keep you warm inside your house at -45C outside throughout most of the year.
-
I was thinking about a container with dimentions like 1000cm x 300cm x 10cm filled with water and painted with pitch black color. Or any other size container but a thin one so the pump could exchange the water (or some other more efficient fluid than water) failry quickly. The wind factor is something unavoidable so there will be heat loss obviously, plus the paint will surely fade out some over time. Is this something someone sells or it doesn't make sense efficiency wise? I would presume that if this was worth the effort someone would sell it since its such a simple idea.
-
So say you live in a house in a cold sunny place like deep Russia or Canada or Alaska. Do you think it would make sense from the engineering and cost saving point of view to create a thin, flat water container to place as the house roof top, paint it with Black 2.0 paint which is extremely black so it should absorb a really big amount of heat from the sun which would heat up the water in the roof top container and distribute it through a pipe system into the household? It should be a fairly cheap system, just an aluminium water container, bunch of pipes running into the house and a simple water pump...plus lots of that black 2.0 paint. Anyone know how would this do in real life efficiency wise? Theres a bunch of videos on youtube showing how the paint looks...I thought of this while having a smoke on my balcony barefoot in the mid day full sun - my balcony floor tiles are dark grey color and I had to put some flip flops on as my feet couldn’t stand the heat. Yeah I know, its a simple silly idea and I bet Im not the first one to come up with it. Still I wonder how efficient this kind of system would be? Imagine a how much heat could be generated when putting up a system like that somewhere high in the mountains where the air is thinner.

@Bignose, @ajb - these guys could help you. Bignose is a resident math expert here at sfn and ajb was/is a one but moved to another country and stopped posting a while back. I’m sure sooner or later someone competent will come to this thread and look at your work. We got mosquitos here right now, I can’t fall asleep while I’m hearing their annoying buzzing sound, I’m currently running around the bedroom trying to get rid of them (00:40 Sunday)

This would be really big if your proof holds. If I were you, I would try publishing at arxiv.org...and don't forget to mention SFN Unfortunately I'm not equipped enough to judge your work.

Why dont we imprison people who dont respect different races and cultures
koti replied to anaccountnow's topic in Politics
You clearly shows that there are multiple directions from which we have to watch out for evil devouring us. To put it shortly - any form of extremism leads to that evil and you clearly are broadcasting an extremist stance. Who and how according to you is to decide on what form of disrespect should lead to imprisonment? I’ll give you the simplest example - I do not respect what you have posted here in this thread, should I go to jail? What about cultures? Should I be imprisoned for not respecting the neo nazzi culture? Or should the neo nazzi guy should be imprisoned for not respecting me? Whould you care to draft the guidelines according to which either me or the neo nazzi guy should go to prison for our mutual lack of respect for each other? Or maybe both of us should go to jail unless we shake hands and respect each others cultures? What do you mean by culture by the way? -
I know that its screwed up that I noticed.

I don’t know but it sure would be interesting. Comon, everyone is taking swings at quantizing everything. I’m ready to be moved into speculations or the trash

I'm not sure what you mean by the 2 higlighted "can & and" words beecee and I think both you and Odenwald don't want to admit it - we know jack sh** about time (no shame, every physicist does that in some way when trying to digg into time) Every theory in physics I know of and every prediction in physics I know of does not elaborate on time in any useful way. I don't think its accurate to say that we have the same problem with time as with space...we have a bunch of working theories on how matter/energy behaves in different manners within space, we even have hypotheses that pockets of distant universe can behave differently with matter from what we see here. Time is just so bizzare that as far as I know, we got nothing remotely concrete on it. The origin of anything is not predicted by the BB theory. We know really a lot about what happened after but nothing about what was at t=0 or before. The before part is in my opinion not a valid question at all...I think time has to be a „thing” of some sort describable in some way and not just a wigi board or an ectoplasma or a some other mindless explanation like - its what it is.

It is isn’t it. I did have some second thoughts posting this video on SFN though. After all there are 3 backup singer girls outside in the video doing the greek dance thingy on the porch and only one girl inside the house playing the flute. Seems like discrimination if you ask me. (SFN does that to you after a while)

We are at wonderous times right now (yeah right, every generation before us said the same thing), we’ve managed to advance in physics and math tools an incredible amount since we’ve come into existence 160K years ago (or 2mln depending how we look at it) We’ve reached energies at LHC probing distances a million times smaller than the atomic nucleous, we’ve managed to build machines that land on other moons & planets thanks to physics, material and software advancements and various other branches of science. We can clone organisms, develop software that wins at „Go” with humans and we’ve managed to achieve thousands of other awesome things in science. Yet we have no idea what time is or what gravity is in its true nature...we have tools that describe virtually everything around us including black holes, first nanoseconds after the BB but we can’t predict where the smoke from my cigarette will go when I light it up and let several seconds pass. We are also sure to a point of absolute certainty that GR is not giving us the underlying view of nature, its a a gem in physics which gave us so much insight into where/how we and stuff exists but its still just an aproximation like Newton before it and the Greeks before him. We also know a few other things...when we used to sail the seas before we knew that the north pole exists - it existed. Then we discovered it and we charted every centimeter of Earth with satellite technology. Why would the Universe be different from our Earth, is there a rational reason to believe that we can’t discover everything one day? Why is there such a dissonance between us knowing the underlying laws governing satellite orbits or alleles in cells and not knowing seemingly simple stuff like cigarette smoke and other fluid turbulance? Every profound theory seems simple and beautiful when it gets discovered and tested, the beauty is in the fact that its not falsifable whatever complex experiment we throw at it. The fact that we are not doing any mainstream experiments that I know of, trying to experiment and make out what makes ‚time’ tick is a disappointment to me. Every physicist I read and listened to that had something predictive to say about the nature of gravity, said that it either „disolves” or „leaks” in a way we only detect part of its a action. As I see it, we know jack s*** about time besides that its got an arrow and its glued to space by GR. Are there any theories and/or experiments we can run on „time” that could help us get at least some idea of what makes it tick?

Heres something to turn you head, this guy rocks, hes like the Dr Evil and Professor Moriarty of funk in one person. I followed him since 2 years ago, theyre on tour right now selling big concerts, it didn’t take long - good stuff sticks right away.

I quickly browsed through the Neil D T thread and what was sensless in it were Polinski’s posts, certainly not closure of the thread. I mean you can argue in some ways to keep the OP’s line of thinking open in that thread for reasons but it was in no way sensless to close that thread. I suggest you look up what „sensless” means...what is sensless is you using this word in this particular context.

Oh stop it ya’ll. Its Saturday ffs.
