I agree as to the fact that not all religions are equally evil all the time. As far as inconsistency goes its hard to quantify which tenet or myth is more or less contradicting, how do you quantify whether reincarnation is more/less inconsistent than ressurection. As far as the OP question is concerned its a dead end...first of all you do not turn a believer, he/she is already turned into their faith. I consider people who are free of the burden of religion to be simply that. Turning a believer implies turning into something or someone with specific views. I’m in the process of my own evolution in thinking about these things, I have to change something because Im loosing too much time which I could use more productivly elsewhere. I like Edward Witten’s take on this...he is often asked in interviews about his views on religion and he always answers that he never felt the need to think about religion, its was just never of interest to him. This most probably enables him to spend more time on productive things.

I agree and I find myself in similar disbelief (or even anger) both with US/Trump related news and my local things going on here. I think It is up to the older generation to teach the younger generation to distinguish between hilton/marriott & Fred/Tim discrepancies (what @iNow wrote above) and how these discrepancies are different from propaganda with an agenda. It is a shame that thsese things have to be taught but it seems that peoples gullability and blindess caused by various factors (environment pressure, upbringing, etc) requires to teach this. When all is said related to these sensitive subjects (guns, religion, idiot for a president) all one can do is try to mold critical minds capable of both logic, empathy and civility. Lack of these three qualities in right proportions causes things like the cnn post you linked.

I just saw a 15 minute interview with the author which made me order the book, how much of the book is factual and accurate and how much is political game play? I'd like to hear opinions from people who read it and/or have some deeper insight. During the interview, the author stated unbelievably controversial things like: Trump doesn't read, he watches talk shows though so WH staff lobbies to invite people to the talk shows to influence him...Trump doesn't read anything which is handed to him, he immediately sets aside any notes or piece of paper that is given to him without looking at it. I like their clips, especially the ones interviewing physicists, I watched most of them if not all of them. I am a little dissapointed that they interview Leonard Susskind and a couple weeks later Deepak Chopra pops up (havent watched that one) There was always something, there was never nothing. I like that notion.

Oh thats just wonderful isn’t it. In my search for data on vaccines (especially MMR) in the last year or so I spoke to quite a few mothers of autistic children between the ages of 8 and 15. All of them went through a 180 degree shift from initial anger and lobbying against vaccines to getting the knowledge and lobbying against the anti-vaccine movement. The psychological mechanisms of this conspiracy theory are equally astonishing as they are dangerous.

I might be talking crap here because I'm horrible at chemistry but isn't the heat in the water a property therefore the two are consistent dimensionally because they don't have to be compared? I’m not sure I understand...if we start comparing quantities of different dimensions like say time and mass or length and velocity we end up straight in cuckoo land like a lot of the crackpots posting in the relativity threads. So in that sense, science has to be consistent dimensionally... but I’m a rookie so I might not be getting the nuances of the question (not like that other thread though )

We watched an episode of a documentary called „The wonder list with Bill Weir” on Iceland last night... they have trolls and elves for religion, people rarely get married, women are ruling the country, no guns, very rare suicides. They refuse to sell out their thermal energy for profit, they have very strong laws and beliefs concerning preservation of nature plus their landscape is like rendered from a fantasy computer game - they’re healthy and happy. They didn’t mention anything about diseases and vaccines but I presume its not an issue there. If it was a bit warmer there I wouldn’t hesitate to move.

The way I see it, is the government should show up at his house with between 600 and 800 dolars in cash. I know its virtually impossible but thats what should be done. Respect for the guy in the film, too bad he’s most likely in the minority.
