Apple Disallows Distrubution of Competing iPhone App
bascule replied to Pangloss's topic in Computer Science
I'm surprised how little attention is paid to Cydia. 1 in 5 iPhones is hacked to include Cydia, the 3rd party packaging application for the iPhone based around the Debian packaging system. Yes, the iPhone App Store gives the individual developer to sell their software within a vast and attentive marketplace. However, all apps must pass through Apple's draconian screening process. Not so with Cydia! Publish any app and it's instantly available to 1/5 iPhone users, regardless of what Apple thinks. Thanks to Cydia I have: MobileTerminal: a full-featured terminal for my iPhone, and Cydia also publishes shells like zsh which make using a terminal on an iPhone even easier. PDAnet: I can tether my 3G connection to any WiFi network I choose. My phone automatically acts as a DHCP server and router. Qik: I can record video from my iPhone, or instantly stream it via live webcast. SwirlyMMS: a full-featured MMS application which can send/receive pictures/audio/video/programs/files/etc. OpenSSH: allows me to shell into my phone, connect to remote servers, and transfer files to/from my phone. Quite handy. -
Yeah as much as I hate Bush, I can't really foresee him starting a war in his remaining three months in office
-
She certainly didn't seem nervous. I'd like to propose Bascule's Corrolary to Godwin's Law: if you compare something which isn't slavery to slavery, you automatically lose the argument.

Bush did a lot of chest thumping about how he was going to invade Iraq
-
Yeah, that certainly worries me, but I'd hope they wouldn't actually consider doing that
-
He's a Democrat, and Democrats hate guns and the 2nd Amendment. However, I think Biden, author of an assault weapons ban, is a much bigger threat in that regard. And please note: none of that is sarcasm.
-
Yes, it's never happened before, and were it to happen I'm sure it would result in quite the drawn out legal battle.
-
I'll be curious to see if Bush tries to pardon himself

The networks called the race for Obama shortly after he won both Pennsylvania and Virginia
-
In the case of Obama, it went to court, and the judge dismissed the suit: http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=79086 Obama also posted his birth certificate on his web site for anyone to see.

Any speculations as to what Bush is going to do in his remaining months?
-
There's still an outstanding electoral vote in Nebraska that might go to Obama Crazy to see Indiana go for Obama
-
No, you can expect this one to drag out for awhile. The margins are so close state law demands a mandatory recount.

Kay Hagan has defeated Elizabeth Dole in North Carolina... which is notable as this marks the end of the Dole dynasty

You mean he towed the Republican party line instead of the Democratic party line? Bush has given carte blanche to Petraeus with zero concern for the effect it's having on our country. In a Time article titled Why Barack Obama Is Winning they point out what Obama does differently in that regard. When Obama met with Petraeus they apparently had a rather rousing discussion about how Iraq and Afghanistan are playing out on the world stage, and apparently by the end of it had reached a sort of mutual understanding of each other's positions, as opposed to the Bush / McCain approach of "we should listen to the generals and do whatever they say" Obama is certainly demonstrating leadership in that regard

There's bee a lot of speculation that Democrats might get the 60 seats needed in the Senate to have a cloture vote and thus prevent filibustering. The polls don't show that as being particularly likely. 538 projects the Democrats may get 58 seats, but it's far more likely they'll get 57. What do you think?
-
I guess. Obama has an 8 point lead in the polls there...
-
Not that I'm accusing them of anything, but the Republicans are in a far better position to rig a vote than the Democrats, considering the political affiliations of manufacturers of US e-voting machines, namely Diebold.
-
Was that a serious comment or are you being sarcastic? If it's the latter, I'm curious as to why you think that way.

There's nothing illegal about hacking an iPhone -
http://www.rove.com/election And in other news, http://FiveThirtyEight.com is now showing Obama's chances of victory at 98.1% I think it's all wrapped up at this point... Obama is the next President of the United States Hooray!

I think the confusion arises from how Obama's plan is structured. Households making $200,000 - $250,000 per year will see no tax increase or decrease. Ones making less than $200,000 a year will see a tax cut. Those making more than $250,000 a year will see a tax increase. So it's not that Obama lowered the "rich point", it's just that people making $200,000 - $250,000 per year won't see a tax cut. But then again, they won't see a tax increase either. As for Biden saying $150,000, no comment. Have I mentioned I don't like Biden very much?

...on foreign policy, anyway: http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=9689 I'm something of a fan of the Cato institute, more on social than economic issues, so I suppose this doesn't come as a surprise to me. However, the Cato institute is generally regarded as being conservative-leaning, and while the article certainly criticizes Obama, it was interesting to see the final judgment was that Obama is better than McCain. This was also interesting: It's nice to see the idea that more experience isn't always better acknowledged. McCain may have more experience, but that doesn't necessarily make him the better candidate.

Can I say: after voting for Biden, I really don't like him? Author of cryptographic export restrictions? Author of the assault weapons ban? Author of the Patriot act? I should've voted for YT...

Given knowledge of evolution and survival of the fittest, the idea that all men (or chickens, or cows) are created equal seems pretty ludicrous. But the sentiment remains: we should bestow equal rights on all people. Everyone is deserving of basic human rights.
